Chapter 83: Chapter Eighty Three: Abandoned, again!
"Alicia, don’t push this." Alexander’s voice turned sharp, his patience snapping.
"What about the promise you made to Nana?" I asked, my voice unsteady as I held onto that last bit of hope.
He was always so quick to go to Lilian whenever she needed him... what did that say about the promise he made to stay by my side?
What kind of marriage was this, where my husband could be summoned away by another woman at any ti?
"I only agreed to treat you well for Nana’s sake. That doesn’t an I made any vows to you," he said coldly. "And right now, soone’s life is at stake. Yet you’re still arguing with ? Alicia, where is your empathy?"
His expression darkened further, impatience written all over his face. Without waiting for a response, he turned and strode out.
The door slamd shut behind him.
My strength gave out, and I fell back onto the bed.
Cold.
The entire room felt frozen, as if all warmth had been stripped away. Even under the covers, I couldn’t stop trembling. I buried my face into the blanket, trying to hold myself together.
His words echoed in my ears—
Don’t push this.
I never made any vows to you.
Where is your empathy?
Each sentence cut deep, like a blade carving into my chest.
I had gathered all my courage... only to be left with this.
Maybe I had expected too much.
The calm of the past few days had made
careless, almost letting
forget about Lilian... forget the distance that had always existed between Alexander and .
As long as Lilian Sumr existed in his life, even if we didn’t divorce, there would never be peace between us.
I shouldn’t have longed for that warmth. I should have known better.
So why did I keep forgetting?
Curling into myself, I shut my eyes, but sleep wouldn’t co. The ticking clock echoed loudly in the silence, stretching ti endlessly.
At so point, exhaustion dragged
under—but even then, the ache in my heart remained.
The next morning, I woke to an empty bed.
The sheets beside
were smooth and cold, untouched.
No one had been there.
I glanced at the ti. It was already past ten.
Suppressing the unease in my chest, I got up and went downstairs.
"Miss Alicia, you’re awake. I’ll prepare breakfast," Maria said softly.
"Has Alexander co back?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"No, Mr. Blackwood hasn’t returned."
"I see..."
The simple reply felt unexpectedly heavy.
Sitting on the sofa, I checked my phone.
Nothing.
Not a single ssage.
After breakfast, around eleven, I had Jim drive
to the hospital.
As I stepped out of the car, my gaze swept the area—then suddenly stopped.
A car I knew all too well was parked nearby.
At first, I thought I was mistaken.
But after a second look...
My fingers slowly tightened.
It was Alexander’s car.
Didn’t he go to see Lilian?
Then why was he here?
My steps slowed as I made my way upstairs. Before I even reached the room, a soft, familiar voice drifted out.
"Nana, it’s been three years since we last t... but you still look as young as ever."
My breath caught.
"You’re truly blessed. I’m sure you’ll recover soon."
Lilian.
A chill ran through my entire body, as if I’d been plunged into icy water.
Alexander... brought her here.
He actually brought her to see my grandmother.
Pain spread through my chest, sharp and suffocating.
Last night, he left
for her—and never ca back.
No ssage. No explanation.
And now...
He was here with her.
Then what was I?
I stood quietly outside the door, unable to move.
Lilian’s voice was gentle—almost too gentle—while Nana’s response remained distant.
Suddenly, a wave of nausea surged up.
Covering my mouth, I turned and hurried toward the washroom.
Third Person POV
"Thank you for your kind wishes, Miss Sumr," Roseline replied calmly after Lilian finished speaking.
Her gaze shifted to Alexander, a trace of disapproval flickering in her eyes.
"Alexander, didn’t you leave with Alicia yesterday? Why are you here today... with Miss Sumr?"
Her tone remained mild, but the implication was clear.
"You’re both busy people. Bringing her here—what if the dia finds out? Wouldn’t that affect her reputation?"
Lilian quickly interjected.
"Nana, it was my idea to co. I heard you were hospitalized and beca worried, so I asked Alexander to bring ."
Steve Blackwood, seated beside the bed, frowned slightly.
"Alexander," he said in a low, firm voice, "why involve outsiders in family matters?"
After a brief pause, he added,
"This isn’t directed at Miss Sumr. But situations like this attract attention. If word gets out that the Blackwood family’s matriarch is hospitalized, people will co... and not all with good intentions."
Lilian’s face paled. She glanced at Alexander, her eyes filled with hurt.
"Uncle, I’m sorry," Alexander said, stepping forward. "It was my idea to bring Lilian. If anyone is to bla, it’s ."
He had spent the entire night looking for her.
After days without seeing him, Lilian had grown increasingly anxious—her thoughts spiraling, her emotions slipping further out of control.
Bringing her here had seed like the only way to reassure her... to prove that he hadn’t abandoned her.
Suddenly, Roseline’s expression changed.
She began coughing violently, clutching her chest.
"Nana!" Alexander rushed forward, panic flashing across his face.
Steve quickly helped her sit up.
"Miss Sumr has already paid her visit," he said sternly. "Nana isn’t well—she shouldn’t be seeing guests for long. You should leave for now."
After a mont, Roseline steadied her breathing and spoke again, her voice hoarse but firm.
"Alexander... have soone escort Miss Sumr ho."
She paused, then added,
"And go pick up Alicia."
"Okay," Alexander replied, his voice tight.
"Lilian, I’ll walk you out."
"Wait."
Roseline’s voice stopped them.
"Miss Sumr, you may go ahead. I need to speak with Alexander."
Lilian hesitated, her gaze lingering on him.
Alexander gave a small nod.
Reluctantly, she turned and walked out of the room.
The door clicked shut behind Lilian, and the room fell into a heavy silence.
Roseline leaned back slightly, her eyes fixed on Alexander.
"Alexander," she said quietly, "i didn’t expect you to forget your promise so soon?"
His brow furrowed. "I... didnt."
"Better," she replied, her voice calm but carrying weight.
She paused, letting the words settle between them.
"Alicia is your wife. You made a commitnt to her... and to yourself. Don’t forget that."
Alexander’s jaw tightened. "I didn’t bring Lilian to hurt Alicia. I—"
"I’m not questioning your intentions," Roseline interrupted gently.
Her gaze was steady.
"But intentions don’t erase consequences, Alexander. Actions do."
He opened his mouth, searching for words.
"It’s complicated," he said finally, voice low.
Roseline shook her head, almost imperceptibly.
"Life isn’t about making things complicated. It’s about keeping your word. Alicia trusted you... don’t give her reason to doubt that trust."
Silence filled the room.
Alexander looked down, the weight of her words pressing on him.
Roseline’s tone softened slightly, though the firmness remained.
"Go and find her. Make it right... before it’s too late."
