Chapter 57: Chapter fifty seven:why didn’t she tell ?
My grip on the phone tightened.
I suddenly rembered—
She couldn’t swim.
I closed my eyes.
"She almost drowned," Jane continued, "but thankfully, a staff mber rescued her in ti."
"Were they caught?" I asked.
"Yes, sir. The chairwoman handed the case over to the company’s legal team. The police confird the won have been arrested. They requested that Director Alicia co in to verify everything."
"Have they inford her yet?"
"No, sir. It was late, so they planned to tell her in the morning."
"Tell them not to call her. I’ll inform her myself."
"Understood, boss."
I ended the call and sat on the edge of the bed, letting out a long breath.
So that was why she looked so pale.
But... why didn’t she tell ?
Even when I asked her, she chose to hide it.
The thought lingered in my mind, refusing to fade.
Eventually, exhaustion took over.
And with unanswered questions weighing heavily on ...
I fell asleep.
On Sunday morning, I went downstairs early, intending to go for a run.
Maria was cleaning the living room and greeted
with a polite, "Good morning, sir," as I walked by.
I paused at the door, then suddenly stopped and turned back.
"Do you know why Alicia moved out of the master bedroom?"
"I forgot to tell you, sir," Maria said. "Last week, soone used a delivery to threaten Mrs. Blackwood. It contained a foul substance with a strong odor. It spilled on the sheets and the floor, so she moved out of the master bedroom."
I froze. "Why didn’t you tell
sooner?"
"You were away on a business trip at the ti. Mrs. Blackwood asked
not to inform you."
My expression darkened. "Did you report it to the police? Do they know who did it?"
"We did report it. They discovered it was a high school student. He’s..."
Maria hesitated.
"What is it?" I pressed.
"He’s a fan of Miss sumr."
Even though Maria wasn’t the type to follow scandals, I could tell she knew what was going on between her employers.
So Alicia was threatened by Lilian’s fan... It must have been because of the makeup scandal.
Now I understood why Alicia had seed so upset that day.
She had said, "Do you think I’ll just suffer in silence? Do you think I’ll just take all the insults?"
A wave of bitterness surged in my chest, leaving
more conflicted than ever.
I turned and headed back upstairs, my steps quieter this ti as I approached the gueeest room Alicia was staying in. I turned the doorknob slowly, and the door opened.
Through the slight opening, I saw her still asleep.
She hadn’t locked her door.
I walked over quietly to the bedside.
Alicia was curled up, her brown hair disheveled, her face almost buried in the blanket. She looked peaceful, yet the way she held herself spoke of insecurity.
My mind drifted back to ten years ago.
I would return to the mansion and find a girl I didn’t know. She would look up at
with cautious eyes and address
timidly, as though she was afraid.
At first, I felt nothing for the new girl who always visited.
Until she moved in and started calling
"brother."
She was polite, well-behaved. Every ti I ca ho, she greeted
with quiet respect.
Years passed in the blink of an eye.
In the quiet corners of my life, Alicia had grown—silently, steadily—like a blooming plum blossom.
I watched her stir slightly, then stepped back, careful not to wake her.
Alicia’s POV
I felt like soone had been watching .
But when I opened my eyes, the room was empty.
Maybe I was imagining things... I had gotten used to sleeping in the sa room as Alexander.
I got up, freshened up, and got dressed. Just as I finished, my phone rang.
I glanced at the screen.
Nana.
