(Arata)
After the gut-wrenching call to his Ma, I began to pace the ergency waiting area. The police ca for our statent and we told them everything we saw and rembered.
Soon Mom, Zaylen and Uncle Kail joined us and hugged turn by turn.
"Arata! It will be fine." Mom kissed the top of my head, holding tight. I simply nodded, finding solace in her warmth.
Baba discussed how everything had happened with Zaylen and Uncle Kail.
"They knew where we were and had co ard. If Karsten hadn’t been fatally injured, I would have assud he had planned it but this is soone else."
"Baba, he would never put my life in danger. Not like this. It’s not his doing," I spoke up, separating from Mom.
"I know, Arata. I saw how he saved our lives. I am not doubting him now." Baba was going to soften towards him. He valued loyalty and now Karsten had demonstrated how important I was to him, more than his own life.
"Could be another old foe," Uncle Kail added, turning to Baba. The n began to discuss who it could be
"Sit and relax. Stress in this condition is not good for you." Mom walked over to the stiff tallic seats of the ergency theatre. The pungent sll of phenyl from freshly cleaned floors made dizzy but I had to be here for him. He could wake up any second.
My heart wouldn’t settle, not for a second. Now I could feel how he must have felt staying outside my hospital room when I was unconscious and being operated on.
How restlessly he must have counted every second.
How he must have prayed.
Did he count the tiles on the floor? Just to pass the ti.
Or blankly stared at the ceiling until his eyes hurt?
Did the world around him disappear and only my thoughts consud him?
Did he watch the grim faces of people coming and going because the place had the stench of death?
How I hated hospitals and yet I ended up in them, one way or the other.
"Co let take you ho. You need to eat and change. Freshen up and we will return," Zaylen quietly offered, sitting beside , his arm went behind , resting on the back of my chair.
But I just shook my head and flatly refused.
"I am not leaving until the Doctor tells he is out of danger and I get to see him."
I turned to face Baba. "Go ho, you must be tired and Grandma will be worried. Mom and I will stay here with Zaylen."
Baba got closer to and placed both his hands on my shoulders. "Don’t overstress. I will return at night with food. Just eat. Rember Karsten would want you to take care of yourself."
"Yes, Baba."
He left with Uncle Kail. Caysir stayed behind, too, remaining alert and vigilant; he stood with Zaylen at a distance to give us space.
"He didn’t even hesitate to put himself between and death," I lanted to Mom. She held , knowing I needed her support.
"That’s what true love is. He cares deeply for you and has fought to be with you. He is one tough man." Mom squeezed my shoulders and comforted with her words.
After what seed like endless hours and incessant waiting, the doctor finally erged from the operating theatre.
I almost rushed to him but Mom told to be careful and held back. She wanted to hear the news first in case it wasn’t a good one and shock would make crumble.
Remaining on the edge of my seat, I observed them and heartily prayed for the good news.
Mom ushered and I almost sprinted towards her and the doctor.
The doctor had an understanding smile on his face.
"He is out of danger. Luck had been on his side that the bullet didn’t hit any vital organs and just scraped the waist muscles." Relief flooded my veins and I found my body relaxing. The tenseness in my muscles evaporated.
"Is he awake?" I bluntly asked, itching to see him.
The doctor shook his head. "No, he is heavily sedated and we would like him to rest for a few more hours before allowing visitors. You can see him later."
"Thank you! For saving his life." I was grateful to the doctor.
"You people can relax, he is going to be just fine." He walked away, his white coat lightly flying behind him.
Zaylen and Caysir joined us and I gave them the good news.
"That’s a relief," Caysir exhaled and Zaylen hugged .
"Now you can eat and wash your hands." Pulling back, he held my hands, which were still coated with his dried blood, and so were my clothes.
"Yes, wash your hands and eat. This is such a crucial stage for your baby’s growth," Mom added, urging along.
"I will get sothing for you." Caysir left to grab sothing.
Mom and I went to the nearby washroom to clean up.
When we returned, Caysir had brought so fresh fruits and sandwiches. We ate together, sharing the food.
My stomach didn’t want to accept it but I forced myself to eat an orange and half a sandwich.
At around 9 pm, I sent Mom ho too and told Baba to stay put as well.
"If you need just call and don’t overstress," she instructed before leaving.
Zaylen and Caysir were here with . They remained beside like pillars and I knew more of Karsten’s guards were just outside, keeping an eye in case anyone tried anything.
Finally, near midnight a nurse ca to fetch .
"Arata?" She questioned and I diligently nodded, shaking a sleepy Zaylen awake from my shoulder.
"Your boyfriend is awake and he wishes to see you. You can et him now."
Relief swept into every limb and I found my body unclenching, releasing the stress that had been holding down.
Nervously, I followed her as she led to his room through brightly lit, narrow corridors. The sll of the disinfectant was almost making sick, so I tried to breathe through my mouth.
Reaching his door, she instructed. "Try to keep him relaxed, he is still under the effects of anaesthesia."
I gave her a nod of appreciation and, with a heavy heart, pushed the door open to enter and see my man.
