217: Her Questions 217: Her Questions The ride ho was quiet.

Raelynn sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window as the late afternoon sunlight cast long golden streaks over the road.

The warmth of the sun should have been comforting, but her mind was too preoccupied to enjoy it.

She still felt shy—no, mortified—about what had happened earlier.

Kade had walked in on them.

Again.

She groaned internally, pressing her fingers against her forehead.

The first ti had been awkward enough.

Kade had caught her and Elion in a sowhat intimate situation before, and now, history had repeated itself.

This ti, it was even worse—Kade had co in to deliver so files, only to find her and Elion asleep together.

On the sa bed.

In each other’s arms.

Raelynn squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she could disappear.

What must Kade think of her now?

That she was reckless?

Improper?

That she and Elion were— She shook her head, cheeks burning.

No, no, no.

It wasn’t like that.

But still… her reputation was ruined already, wasn’t it?

She didn’t even dare to et Kade’s eyes after waking up.

The mont she had realized what happened, she had scrambled away from Elion, mumbling so excuse while Kade—ever composed—had simply placed the files on the desk, gave Elion a knowing look, and left without a word.

Raelynn could have sworn she saw the hint of a smirk before the door closed behind him.

Ugh.

Raelynn groaned internally as she buried her burning face into her hands.

Kade probably thinks we continued whatever we were doing during lunch.

Her fingers twitched against her cheeks as the mory resurfaced—her hand on Elion’s thigh, the warmth of his skin beneath her fingertips, the way his breath had hitched.

It had been nothing.

Just a fleeting mont, a stupid impulse.

And yet, now, after waking up curled against him in the office, it must have looked like sothing else entirely.

Ugh.

Just kill now.

She peeked between her fingers, glancing at the desk as if it held the answers to all her problems.

Kade hadn’t said anything.

No teasing remarks, no raised eyebrows—just that damn smirk before he left.

And that was sohow worse.

Because it ant he knew.

Or at least, he thought he knew.

Raelynn sat up straight, shaking her head vigorously.

No.

No way.

He doesn’t actually think that.

I’m just overthinking it.

It was her mind that kept replaying the mont from lunch.

It was her ridiculous thoughts making sothing out of nothing.

She stole a glance at Elion, who was driving beside her.

Unlike her, he didn’t seem the least bit affected.

His expression remained unreadable, his fingers drumming lazily against the steering wheel as if nothing had happened.

Of course, he wouldn’t care.

He never did.

Raelynn exhaled, turning back to the window.

She would just have to ignore it.

Maybe, with ti, Kade would forget.

Maybe.

When they finally arrived at the mansion, Raelynn let out a small breath, grateful to be back.

She expected a quiet return, maybe a simple greeting from the staff before heading to her room to gather her thoughts.

But the mont they stepped inside, a storm was already waiting for them.

Sloane.

The woman ca marching toward them, her eyes blazing with anger, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.

“Raelynn!” Sloane’s voice was sharp, almost scolding.

“Where have you been all day?” Raelynn blinked, startled by the sudden outburst.

“I—I was at Elion’s office,” she said, confused by the intensity of Sloane’s reaction.

“I know that,” Sloane snapped.

“But do you realize how worried I was?

You didn’t co back to the mansion the entire day!” Raelynn frowned.

“But… I told you, didn’t I?

I sent you a text.” “Yes, you did,” Sloane admitted, crossing her arms.

“But you should have told sooner!” Raelynn opened her mouth, then closed it again, unsure how to respond.

She hadn’t thought it was such a big deal.

She had inford Sloane, so why was she making such a fuss?

Before she could say anything else, Elion, who had remained silent the entire ti, finally spoke.

“Don’t make a fuss over sothing like that,” he said lazily, shrugging off his coat.

Sloane shot him a glare.

“I wouldn’t need to if she actually communicated properly.” Elion didn’t even acknowledge the anger in her tone.

He simply handed his coat to one of the staff and walked past them as if the conversation no longer concerned him.

Raelynn sighed.

“Sloane, I’m sorry for worrying you.

I really didn’t think it was a big deal.” Sloane exhaled, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly.

“Just… let know earlier next ti, okay?” Raelynn nodded.

“Okay.” With that, Sloane gave her one last scrutinizing look before finally relenting.

She turned on her heel and walked off, muttering sothing about reckless behavior.

Raelynn stood there for a mont, shaking her head.

It wasn’t like she had disappeared without a word.

But Sloane had always been protective of her, so maybe she was just overreacting out of concern.

Letting out a small sigh, she decided not to dwell on it.

She had other things on her mind.

Later that night, Raelynn sat alone in her room.

The lamp on the nightstand cast a warm glow over the space, making the shadows stretch long against the walls.

The night was quiet, save for the occasional rustling of the wind against the window.

But no matter how peaceful the room seed, Raelynn’s mind was anything but.

She couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The file.

She had seen it in Elion’s office.

A file about her.

Her fingers curled into the sheets as she stared down at her lap.

Why hadn’t she asked him about it earlier?

She had been alone with him all day.

She had countless chances to bring it up, to demand answers.

But she hadn’t.

And now… she wasn’t sure if she wanted to.

Her heart pounded as she thought back to that mont—seeing her na on that file, the weight of it in her hands before she had hastily put it back.

Why did he have information about her?

What was he keeping from her?

She wanted to know.

She didn’t want to know.

Raelynn bit her lip, torn between curiosity and fear.

Because once she learned the truth… there would be no going back.
