"Has your superpower...lost control even more?" You Ruirui paused for a mont before asking.
Just as she lifted her head earlier, she caught a glimpse of faint electric arcs lingering in the darkness through the rearview mirror, and Gu Qiye’s appearance was off too—his head hung low, face pale like a paper figure.
"Not to that extent, not to the point of losing control," Gu Qiye said softly. "I’m just conducting a simple test. Perhaps if I use the black electric type more often, it’ll gradually beco more stable. That way, it won’t fail during actual combat."
"Is that so," replied You Ruirui.
She glanced up slightly from her tablet, looking at the young man seated behind her. The lights in the cabin were off, casting shadows over his face from the back seat. For so reason, his expression vaguely conveyed a feeling of struggle and pain.
At this mont, Gu Qiye’s mind was in turmoil.
Endure. My enemies are more than one, it’s too early to reveal my identity now; the ones who killed my mother haven’t been found. If I kill her now, my identity will be exposed, and I won’t be able to stay in Rainbow Wings anymore.
So, I must continue to endure... Now is not the ti.
Thinking of this, Gu Qiye’s right hand, hidden in shadow, suddenly dropped, and the flicker of black electric light at his fingertips extinguished. A sense of relief washed over him and he closed his eyes wearily, no longer observing the back of You Ruirui.
"I was wondering... do you need to turn around and have a checkup?" You Ruirui asked softly.
"No... I don’t need it."
Gu Qiye said quietly, shaking his head.
"I respect your personal choice, but please report in a tily manner if needed," You Ruirui said. "Every Catastrophe-level Superpower User is a valuable asset, so you must realize the importance of your physical condition."
Her fingers swiped across the screen, adopting a monotone, robotic voice as she spoke, seemingly indifferent:
"According to the records, during the years you served as a Mutant in Li Jing, you didn’t like relying on the Mutants Association’s dical team, unless your injuries were severe enough to lose consciousness. Otherwise, most of the ti, you choose to treat your wounds alone, relying on your body’s self-healing ability to tough it out, rather than accepting help from the support staff."
"So what?"
"That’s very peculiar behavior. You clearly have the option to not work alone."
Gu Qiye found a clumsy excuse, "I just don’t trust them. I had a colleague who died because of a mistake by the support staff."
"But Rainbow Wings is different. Behind us stands the world’s top dical team. You can confidently entrust your body to them," You Ruirui said. "They’re not like the makeshift team at the Mutants Association."
Gu Qiye nodded absentmindedly. He felt unsettled. Knowing she was his enemy, he didn’t want to hear her speak, yet her emotionless voice inadvertently cald him.
"Are you concerned about ?" he suddenly asked.
You Ruirui’s fingertips paused on the screen, then resud sliding indifferently after a while. "No, this is just a colleague’s suggestion," she said.
"Thank you."
"Have your family contacted you?" You Ruirui asked after a mont’s silence.
She didn’t understand how to make the person in the rearview mirror value themselves more. The historical records also showed that in the evaluation by the association’s psychologist, the Mutant Blue Arc displayed clear self-destructive tendencies, hence why he seed neglectful of his own issues but placed such importance on other people’s lives.
Perhaps, his family could make him understand to care for himself more? You Ruirui speculated, waiting for Gu Qiye’s response.
Gu Qiye remained silent for a long, long ti before shaking his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because... my old man has a habit of disappearing, gone for half a month at a ti; thanks to him, my sister often runs away without a word," Gu Qiye said quietly. "But I have a younger brother. He’s relatively well-behaved and rarely causes anyone trouble. He’s the only one still at ho now, and I am a bit worried about whether he’s eating properly."
"Does this younger brother, who doesn’t need worrying, usually contact you?"
"No, my brother doesn’t like sending ssages to people, he’s quite introverted."
You Ruirui thought for a mont and asked again: "Your old man... what kind of person is he?"
She seed not quite used to the term ’old man’, but still went along with Gu Qiye’s speaking manner.
Honestly, it felt jarring to hear such an intimate and down-to-earth term from a girl whose every word seed precision-made like a robot.
Gu Qiye leaned his head against the chair back, emptying his mind, thinking for a while before finally speaking.
"Hmm... My old man?" He thought aloud, speaking casually, "He’s a volatile, stubborn, and awkward person. As long as it’s sothing he’s decided on, no matter what others say, he won’t listen, completely unreasonable. But many of us in the family inherited this trait, including myself."
He suddenly grinned at the end.
Before joining Rainbow Wings, Gu Qiye could never have imagined finding himself in his enemy’s car discussing the father who was killed by her...
