Lu Jingyan, who was drinking water, nearly choked, swallowing spit before looking at the ssage he sent again.
Her heartbeat, annoyingly, began to pound faster and faster.
This was a situation she had never experienced before.
She tried hard to calm her little heart, but it was futile; it only beat more fiercely.

Lu Jingyan threw down her phone and entered the bathroom.
She turned on the tap, splashed her face with cold water, and finally felt a bit more normal.

Lu Jingyan, whose busy days were finally drawing to a close, slept in until one in the afternoon before getting up.
After washing up and packing her belongings from the hotel stay over the last few days, it was almost two in the afternoon. She was so hungry her stomach was growling. Not wanting to go out to eat, she opted for the hotel’s afternoon tea instead.
After filling her stomach, Lu Jingyan returned to her hotel room to grab her things, planning to check out and leave.
Her car had been parked in the underground parking lot for the past few days. She took the elevator to the ground floor, left her room key at the front desk, and then walked toward the elevator again.
She hadn’t gone far when soone stopped her: “Excuse , Miss.”
Lu Jingyan paused and looked at the person approaching.
She had a good mory and imdiately recognized that the woman who had called out to her was the sa woman who had been a victim of dostic violence by her husband at the top floor the previous morning.
Lu Jingyan did not speak.
“Do you rember ? We t upstairs yesterday morning,” the woman introduced herself. “My surna is Sun. I’ve been waiting for you for a long ti. I thought you had already checked out, but I’m glad you didn’t leave.”
Lu Jingyan raised an eyebrow: “What’s up?”
Mrs. Sun nodded several tis, seeming unsure how to begin. She stuttered for quite a while before managing to say, “I, I need to ask a favor. Could you help
by testifying? My husband wants a divorce, but I want custody of our daughter…”
Before Mrs. Sun could finish speaking, Lu Jingyan coldly cut her off: “Not interested.”
Mrs. Sun didn’t expect such a blunt rejection and was montarily stunned: “I know it’s a bit offensive to ask you for such a favor, but you’re the only one who can help
right now. Don’t worry, I won’t let you do it for nothing; I’ll compensate you.”
“Compensation?” Lu Jingyan let out a light laugh: “Is it money? Sorry, but that’s what I least lack.”
“…”
“Please move aside.” Lu Jingyan saw Mrs. Sun standing still. Losing her patience, she dragged her suitcase around her.
Mrs. Sun followed her: “Please, I’m begging you. Just do a good deed. I’m really out of options. I can’t lose my daughter.”
Lu Jingyan ignored Mrs. Sun as if she hadn’t heard and pressed the elevator button.
The elevator door opened quickly, and Mrs. Sun desperately grabbed Lu Jingyan’s clothes: “Could you please consider it properly.”
Lu Jingyan looked down at her grasped clothing, her face indifferent: “Let go.”
Her words weren’t heavy, but her presence was commanding.
Frightened, Mrs. Sun released her grip, but thinking of her daughter, she grabbed on again.
They were at a standoff for a while until Lu Jingyan’s patience ran out: “I have no obligation to help you, and I don’t intend to. Instead of pestering , you’d be better off figuring out how to provoke your husband to hit you again. Now, let go, or I’ll call security.”

Eventually, Mrs. Sun let go.
Lu Jingyan was her last and now broken hope.
The mont she stepped aside to let Lu Jingyan pass, she couldn’t help it; her eyes turned red.
Lu Jingyan’s gaze coldly swept across her face. Seeing her reddening eyes, she showed no sign of being moved and entered the elevator with her suitcase.

Sheng Xian had just entered the hotel lobby when he saw Lu Jingyan.
Right after that, he saw his client.
The two of them were talking about sothing, Lu Jingyan’s face was filled with impatience, and his eyes and brows were full of rejection.
Sheng Xian approached and saw Mrs. Sun with red eyes, tearing up, and asked with a twitch of his eyelid, “What happened?”
Mrs. Sun looked up, saw Sheng Xian, hurriedly wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, and said with a bit of embarrassnt, “I rembered yesterday that when my husband was beating , there was a witness. I wanted to ask for her help, but she refused.”

Sheng Xian thought of Lu Jingyan who had just been talking to her, “Was it the person who just entered the elevator?”
Mrs. Sun nodded, “You saw?”

Exiting the elevator, Lu Jingyan opened the trunk of her car and tossed her suitcase inside.
After closing the trunk door, she opened the car door and was about to get in when her phone rang.
It was a call from Sheng Xian.
Lu Jingyan was a bit surprised, this was the first ti he had reached out to her.
Answering the phone, Lu Jingyan cheerfully called, “Big brother,” and was just about to ask if he missed her when Sheng Xian’s voice ca through, “Have you left?”
Lu Jingyan held back the words at the tip of her tongue, “Ah?”
“Are you still at the hotel?”
“Yeah, in the underground parking lot.”
“Wait for .”
The phone call was ended by Sheng Xian.
With confusion, Lu Jingyan put down her phone, rolled down the car window, and stuck her head out to look towards the elevator.
He was quite fast; in less than two minutes, Sheng Xian walked out from inside.
He circled around the parking lot, found her car, and walked over.
Lu Jingyan didn’t get out of the car, but leaned on the window watching Sheng Xian hurry over. Just as she was about to ask what was so urgent, Sheng Xian spoke first, “Did you see a dostic violence incident on the top floor of the hotel yesterday morning?”
Lu Jingyan was a bit taken aback, “How did you know about that?”
Sheng Xian, “One of them is my client.”
“Oh, what a coincidence, it seems I have quite the fate with big brother.” Lu Jingyan glanced at Sheng Xian and then asked, “Did you co to ask
about that?”
“Not entirely.” Sheng Xian looked at her and after a mont of silence said, “Mrs. Sun asked for your help to be a witness, and you refused?”
Lu Jingyan frankly admitted, “Yeah, I refused.”
Sheng Xian, “Could you reconsider?”
Without a second thought, Lu Jingyan replied, “No need.”
After all, this was the person with whom she might have a connection, either openly or in secret. Her rejection was too blunt, making herself seem too cold and indifferent.
After thinking for a mont, Lu Jingyan added, “She doesn’t deserve sympathy. She should have divorced after the first incident of dostic violence. Years have passed, and she never thought about saving herself, so why should I save her? To say she’s a victim is incorrect; it’s more fitting to say she’s an enabler of dostic violence. Besides, I was there by chance that day. If I hadn’t been there, wouldn’t she be without evidence anyway? So it’s simple, pretend you didn’t see
that day.”
Lu Jingyan thought this would be the end of it. She stuck her head out of the window and smiled, “Big brother, the weather’s nice today. How about going for a drive together?”
Sheng Xian looked at her with a calm face.
His silent, pressing gaze was quite oppressive.
Lu Jingyan looked away, cleared her throat, and was just about to say sothing with a smile, but Sheng Xian slightly flickered his eyelids and said, “The child is innocent.”
It was like him; the reason he took this case was not to rescue Mrs. Sun from dire straits but for the sake of the child.
Having experienced a terrible family himself, he understood the profound impact such an environnt could have on a person’s life and hence wanted the child to grow up with love and care as much as possible.
Seeing that Lu Jingyan gave no reaction, Sheng Xian spoke again, “The child is only in her teens. She needs her mother, not a father prone to violence.”
Lu Jingyan shrugged indifferently, “Then it’s her bad luck for being born into this situation. I’m no saint; I have no reason to help her. Besides, aren’t you the youngest professor at the law school? Any case in your hands is bound to be a victory; I believe you can do it this ti too. If all else fails, you can exploit the loopholes in the law. Isn’t that what they say in the legal profession? The law is not to be obeyed but to be utilized.”
Sheng Xian fell silent again.
He stared straight into Lu Jingyan’s eyes as if searching for sothing, or trying to excavate a shred of hesitation from the depths of her gaze.
The girl remained indifferent from beginning to end.
There wasn’t a hint of warmth in the eyes that t his.
With a bit of persistence, Sheng Xian kept looking at her quietly, and after a while, he asked, “Why have you beco like this?”
After a pause, he added, “The you I once knew wasn’t like this.”
