In Easthan, Calvin had kept a low profile, blending in like any ordinary assistant. But after yesterday’s fight, when he revealed a commanding presence, Daniel started to doubt who he really was.
What was his true purpose in staying by Chantelle’s side?
"I’ll explain to Chantelle about yesterday." Daniel’s voice was condensed, but he let go of the doorknob.
Calvin smiled without replying, though his expression showed he was satisfied with Daniel’s action.
Feeling upset, Daniel asked bluntly, "When did you start working with Chantelle?"
"Six years ago," Calvin answered with a mocking smile and a cold tone. "That was when you left her in the hospital to fend for herself."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t bother to explain that he hadn’t known what had happened back then, nor that he hadn’t abandoned her. Instead, he asked, "You’re the one who saved her?"
Calvin did not answer, and Daniel continued to guess. "If you really saved Chantelle, she wouldn’t let you stay beside her as her assistant. Who is the person behind you?"
"It’s soone you can’t afford to offend. I’ll give you a word of advice. Don’t ever hurt Ms. Chantelle, or you won’t be able to bear the consequences." After saying this, Calvin turned around and went to prepare lunch for the children.
He didn’t care about Daniel’s reaction.
Daniel stood there for a long ti, staring at Calvin’s back.
He believed that Calvin wasn’t bluffing. There really was soone powerful who had saved Chantelle six years ago.
What’s that person’s gender? Why did he save Chantelle? When Chantelle ca back to Easthan, news about her being with spread everywhere. So why didn’t that person co forward? Or... has he been in contact with her all this ti without knowing? Daniel thought to himself.
From the day Chantelle returned to Easthan, Daniel knew she carried many secrets. How did she beco president of the Charity Association? How did she know Joseph? Where did she learn those deadly skills she sotis revealed?
He never asked. He wanted her to tell him on her own at the right ti. But after what happened yesterday, Calvin no longer trusted him. The person backing Calvin might make a move because of it.
Daniel’s eyes darkened. Whoever was behind Calvin, he would never let that person co between him and Chantelle.
"Doctor! Doctor!" Suddenly, Chantelle rushed out of the ward, and her tired face was full of joy.
Calvin heard her voice and hurried over. "Ms. Chantelle, the doctor will be here soon. Is Mr. Quinn awake?"
"Yes, Xander is awake! He finally woke up!" Chantelle let out a breath of relief.
"Mommy, is Godfather awake?" Stephanie dropped her food and ran out. She was the one who cared about Xander the most.
Kane and Railer followed quickly, both looking worried.
Railer didn’t know Xander well, but he rembered how Xander had saved them yesterday. Even when Trenton’s n kept beating him, he never gave up. That made Railer both grateful and worried for him.
"The doctor is here!" Calvin quickly pulled the children to the side.
Everyone followed the doctor into the ward, and the corridor fell silent.
Daniel stood silently for a mont, then started toward the door. But Railer blocked him. "Daddy, there are too many people inside. Let’s wait outside."
"Hurry, Daddy! If you stand here, Godfather won’t be able to breathe!" Stephanie grabbed his hand when he didn’t move.
At that mont, Daniel saw Chantelle holding Xander’s hand, and his face darkened.
Railer noticed sothing was wrong when he followed Daniel’s eyes. Afraid Daniel might do sothing Chantelle would hate, he quickly pulled him away.
Daniel lost control for a mont but soon regained his composure. He let Railer lead him to a quiet corner.
anwhile, Stephanie and Kane leaned against the door fra, watching Xander inside.
Railer brought over two small chairs and sat down with Daniel, his eyes calm but full of worry and helplessness. It looked like he wanted to talk.
Daniel fiddled with the phone in his hand as his eyes drifted back to the ward again and again.
"Daddy, why didn’t you rush back to save us yesterday?" Railer asked.
Calvin had already told him that Chantelle ignored Daniel because Daniel used them to draw Trenton out, but he didn’t return in ti to save them.
As for the real reason Daniel didn’t make it back, Calvin had already found out, but he only told Chantelle, not Railer.
"Daddy had sothing to do, so I was delayed." Daniel frowned at the mory of yesterday. He was filled with guilt and regret.
"Is there anything more important than us?" Railer glared at him.
Daniel was stunned after seeing his son’s reaction. Of course, nothing was more important than his wife and children.
"In my heart, you’ll always be the most important. I’m sorry for what happened yesterday. I’ll do my best to make it up to you and earn your forgiveness."
"Can’t you tell us why?" Railer’s eyes were filled with confusion as he looked at Daniel.
Daniel didn’t want to drag the children into this, but staring back at Railer, he suddenly realized the boy he raised had grown enough to carry so of his worries.
"Daddy, we’re a family. What can’t you tell us? If you keep hiding things, Mommy will only be hurt." Railer sighed when Daniel fell silent.
Adults always thought he, Kane, and Stephanie were too young, so they kept things from them. But children often saw the truth more clearly.
Right now, Railer felt that if Daniel just explained why he hadn’t co back in ti yesterday, their Mommy would forgive their Dad. But since Daniel didn’t exert any effort, Chantelle was still annoyed.
Daniel looked toward Xander’s ward and saw Stephanie and Kane walk inside. He turned back to Railer, and the discomfort in his chest beca heavier.
"I assigned a few of my n to protect you yesterday, but they betrayed . When I was fighting Trenton’s n, I saw a woman who looked like your grandma, so I chased her..."
"Grandma? You an your real mother?" Railer stared at him in shock. He had never heard Daniel speak about a grandmother.
Wasn’t Grandpa the only elder in their family?
"Yes," Daniel said quietly. "She left the Wilson family when I was four. Grandpa forbade everyone from ntioning her na, so you never knew. If I didn’t have a photo of my parents together, I might not even rember her face."
