"Ms. Chantelle, Mr. Bently said he’ll only sign the agreent if you et him in person. He also said you’ll never learn the truth about your mother’s death unless you et him," Calvin said as he handed her the Bently Corporation acquisition contract.

A lot had happened in the past few days, and Chantelle hadn’t had ti to deal with Roman. However, Roman thought she was ignoring him on purpose and had been calling Calvin nonstop.

"The cause of my mother’s death?" Chantelle stood up and her face turned cold. All this ti, she believed Ruby was her real mother, but now she wasn’t so sure.

Then who was her real mother?

She had once hired a private detective to look into Roman’s ex-wife. But there was nothing. No records. Not even a photo.

"I think Mr. Bently knows sothing that hasn’t been revealed," Calvin said.

When Roman talked to Calvin on the phone, he kept stuttering. Calvin tried to get answers, but Roman refused to say anything. He sounded cautious, and even afraid.

"He’s just desperate now. He’ll say anything to get what he wants," Chantelle muttered and walked out the door.

Chantelle never felt loved by her parents growing up. Because of that, she wasn’t really curious about her mother. She just wanted to know one thing: Did her mother leave her on purpose or not?

After hearing what she said, Calvin quickly sent more people to keep an eye on Roman. If Roman was planning sothing, they had to stop him before he acted.

"I was supposed to et Mr. Bently at a coffee shop," Calvin said while driving. "But he told he broke his leg and can’t move. So we have to go to his place instead. He lives in a slum on the north side. The place is in terrible shape. Do you think it’s a trap?"

Chantelle looked out the window and shrugged. "He’s injured. There’s not much he can do."

Buzz!

While Chantelle’s mind was wandering, her phone suddenly buzzed. It was a ssage from Kane.

She quickly replied.

Chantelle: You can play computer gas for one hour. After that, Mr. Charles will take you to kindergarten.

Kane: Mommy, but I’m worried about you. Can I stay ho a few more days to take care of you?

Chantelle: I’m fine now. I don’t need you to take care of .

Kane: But what if Daddy asks? I need to cover for you, and I can only do that if I’m at ho.

Chantelle: You told Daddy I went out?

Chantelle’s heart sank. She hadn’t seen Daniel when she woke up, but the thought of him nagging her made her nervous.

Kane and Railer kept bothering her. Daniel wouldn’t stop lecturing her every ti she tried to leave the house. Even the butler kept bringing her food, hoping she’d stay ho.

She couldn’t take it anymore so she snuck out.

At first, Calvin also nagged Chantelle just like Daniel told him to. But the mont she gave him a sharp glare, he shut his mouth.

Kane: Don’t worry, Mommy. Daddy doesn’t know. I’m always on your side.

Chantelle: Okay. You can play on the computer for another half an hour.

Kane: No, Mommy, please.

Chantelle: That’s final.

"Ms. Chantelle, we’re here," Calvin said as he opened the door.

Chantelle was shocked when she stepped out of the car. The place looked worse than she expected. It was completely run down.

The buildings were falling apart, and the people living there looked poor. Trash and even human waste were everywhere. There wasn’t even a proper sidewalk to walk on.

From what Chantelle knew, Roman had sold two of his houses. He shouldn’t be living sowhere like this.

"Mrs. Bently took all his money," Calvin said when he noticed her confused look. "When Mr. Bently and Kingsley tried to get it back, her n broke his leg."

Hearing that, Chantelle didn’t know what to feel.

Roman used to adore Ruby so much. How could soone as sharp as him be fooled by his own wife?

"I think Mr. Bently wants you to help Kingsley. I heard he’s sick," Calvin said. He was also surprised that soone like Roman, who only cared about himself, was suddenly thinking about others.

Chantelle frowned. But then, she noticed a holess man across the street staring at her nonstop. It made her feel agitated.

She was still unsure whether to ask Calvin to bring Roman out when she suddenly heard screeching brakes and footsteps behind her.

Chantelle suddenly felt nervous. She quickly reached for the dagger in her pocket. But when she saw a familiar Maybach pull up, she let out a breath and lowered her hand.

"Mrs. Wilson, please wait a mont," Ashton said as he rushed into the building with his n.

A short while later, they ca out carrying Roman and Kingsley on stretchers.

Chantelle kept glancing at the Maybach. It was parked far away, and she couldn’t tell if anyone was inside.

Roman, lying on the stretcher, looked thinner than before. His hair was ssy and filled with gray.

"You said you want to buy Bently Corporation, right? Where’s the agreent? I’ll sign it now, but I want the money right away!" he said weakly.

Kingsley, lying beside Roman, looked very sick. His face was pale, and it seed like he didn’t have much ti left.

"What do you need the money for? Are you still trying to make a coback?" Chantelle asked, glaring at Roman.

"That’s none of your business! Just give the money!" Roman shot back. He didn’t trust anyone anymore.

Even his own wife wanted him dead. The only person who stayed loyal to him was Kingsley. That’s why he was willing to do anything to save him.

"Show us what you’ve got to offer. Then I’ll know how much Bently Corporation is really worth," Ashton said. He brought a stool from the Maybach and placed it by Chantelle’s feet.

Chantelle was tired from walking in heels. The mont she saw the stool, she sat down with relief.

She glanced at the Maybach, then looked at Ashton.

Ashton looked up on purpose, pretending not to notice her stare. He clearly wasn’t going to tell her if Daniel was inside the car.

What is this guy trying to pull?

"I don’t have anything to bargain with," Roman said. "Your mother died from illness. I only said that to lure you here. Don’t worry, I didn’t do anything to her. When she fainted in front of , she didn’t even have her ID. If I hadn’t helped her, she might’ve died right there."

"If you’ve got nothing to offer, then there’s no point in signing the contract," Chantelle said as she stood up to leave.
