At two o’clock in the afternoon, Rong Shen appeared at Gui Ning Residence. Unexpectedly, Fu Shinian allowed him to co in, although he had previously inford Su Mu and Jiang Bei, suggesting that if they didn’t want to see him, they could stay in their rooms. He absolutely would not allow Rong Shen to intrude.

Jiang Bei thanked him briefly before returning to her room. Su Mu glanced at Fu Shinian and spoke:

"Didn’t you say you wouldn’t let Rong Shen co over?"

"This ti, it’s actually sothing important." Fu Shinian smiled faintly. "But don’t worry, what we’re discussing has nothing to do with Jiang Bei."

Fu Shinian ran a legitimate business, whereas Rong Shen’s involved areas often shaded in darkness. So regarding the conversation between the two, Su Mu couldn’t help but feel apprehensive. Even though she had never pried into his work affairs before, Su Mu finally asked:

"What could the two of you possibly have to talk about?"

Fu Shinian hadn’t originally intended to explain the details to Su Mu, but seeing her worried expression, he eventually relented:

"Do you rember what happened three years ago in the underground parking lot, when soone fired shots at us?"

Su Mu froze in place:

"Did you find the culprit?"

"No, it’s been too long, making it hard to investigate. But there have been so leads. A few days ago, Song Yi uncovered so traces linking the incident to one of Rong Shen’s subordinates. After that, I handed the matter over to Rong Shen to look into it. Today, he said he had so news, which is why he ca over."

Su Mu furrowed her brows slightly. Fu Shinian noticed her concern and hugged her with a smile:

"Don’t look so worried. We’re just trying to find the shooter—there’s no real danger."

"But it’s been three years, and we still can’t even determine who this person really is. I’m genuinely worried."

"There’s no need." Fu Shinian reassured her. "Besides, this person might already be dead by now."

When Rong Shen ca in, he greeted Su Mu briefly before heading to the guest room with Fu Shinian. Su Mu noticed that Rong Shen paused montarily at the staircase on the second floor, seemingly gazing in the direction of the guest room. Only then did he step forward and head toward the other side.

Inside the study, Rong Shen tossed the docunts in his hand onto Fu Shinian’s desk:

"Here’s the person you wanted to investigate. It took quite a while to uncover anything because of how long it’s been, but the results should be accurate."

Fu Shinian thumbed through the papers, briefly scanning them; they weren’t of significant use to him. What he cared about most was the person’s location. Only by knowing where the individual was could he learn the reason behind it all—the true motive behind the attempt to kill him and Su Mu.

"Where is he?"

"Dead?"

"What?" Fu Shinian looked at Rong Shen in shock. "You’re giving a dead person as an explanation?"

"I don’t like it either, but there’s nothing I can do. Three years ago, there was indeed so missing firearms under my watch. But as you know, in this line of work, such things happen often and nobody paid it much mind. When you handed those docunts, only then did I recall the matter. They investigated, found the person, but he’s already dead."

Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds. After a short pause, he cald himself down and settled into his seat:

"How did he die?"

"A car accident," Rong Shen replied. "Half a year ago."

It seed unremarkable and revealed no viable loopholes. After all, accidents happen every day. Fu Shinian could only view it as an unfortunate coincidence. However, the effort he had poured into chasing this lead for months ending in vain left him resentful; all the work had turned out to be a waste in the end.

Not long after Rong Shen left, it was almost ti to pick up Qiqi. Since Jiang Bei planned to join them to witness this historic mont firsthand, Su Mu chose not to question Fu Shinian about his conversation with Rong Shen yet. Su Mu worried Jiang Bei might feel upset, even though the matter had nothing to do with her.

At four o’clock sharp, Fu Shinian and Su Mu arrived at Qiqi’s kindergarten gate, having brought their household registration booklets and IDs. Su Mu sat in the passenger seat, Fu Shinian in the driver’s seat, their hands intertwined the entire ti. From ti to ti, they exchanged smiles.

Fu Shinian spoke:

"Let’s head in and pick up Qiqi together. She’ll be really happy to see us."

Su Mu nodded:

"Mmm, I hope so."

Though Su Mu wasn’t entirely confident that Qiqi would cheer up, she hoped their decision today would at least elicit a smile from her.

This was an important mont, so Su Shiyue, who was well aware of the details, showed up as well. Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng, having apparently caught wind of the news, also appeared at the kindergarten gate together, ready to accompany them to the Civil Affairs Bureau after picking up Qiqi to witness their historic milestone.

Su Mu thought this whole extravagance was unnecessary, but Fu Shinian felt it was terrific. After all, their first marriage hadn’t received anyone’s blessings. Even if it had, Fu Shinian wouldn’t have cared for them. This ti, however, he wanted to share his happiness with everyone, even the entire world.

Ignoring the few waiting outside the car to chat, Fu Shinian and Su Mu sat quietly inside, patiently awaiting the mont. Once the ti ca, they finally got out, greeted the group, and walked hand-in-hand toward the kindergarten entrance.

Su Shiyue watched their backs as they walked away and smiled faintly:

"I never realized my brother and sister-in-law’s silhouettes were so well-matched."

Qiao Yu smiled lightly:

"They’ve always been a good match—you simply didn’t notice before."

Recalling the foolish things she had done in the past, Su Shiyue shook her head with a wry smile but said nothing more.

Ji Nanfeng had been silent the entire ti, his gaze fixed on Jiang Bei. After not seeing her for more than a month, he realized she seed to have gained weight and her complexion had improved considerably. Her belly, in particular, was noticeably larger, and Ji Nanfeng’s expression softened. He said nothing.

It was clear to him that Jiang Bei didn’t want to talk to him.

Qiao Yu, too, was absentmindedly observing the pair. Ever since Jiang Bei had gone missing and Qiao Yu had confronted Ji Nanfeng and Rong Shen at the hospital, he hadn’t seen Ji Nanfeng for quite so ti. As for Jiang Bei, this was their first encounter since those events.

Though the scene seed harmonious, Qiao Yu couldn’t guess what they were truly thinking inside. Smiling to himself at the thought, he realized it had nothing to do with him anyway.

As the clock ticked past 4:30, Su Shiyue, having finished her conversation with Jiang Bei, turned her gaze toward the kindergarten gate. She recalled the mont she parted ways with Qiqi earlier that day and smiled:

"Actually, Qiqi wasn’t angry at all today. Her behavior was all an act—she just wanted my brother and sister-in-law to hurry up and remarry."

Jiang Bei hadn’t expected the little girl to think that far ahead. She smiled faintly, about to say sothing, but suddenly caught sight of Fu Shinian and Su Mu rushing out of the kindergarten, visibly flustered. Su Mu’s face, in particular, was as pale as a sheet of paper.
