When Fu Shinian received the news of Qin Nianwan’s suicide attempt, he was surprised, but it did not evoke much emotion within him. He replied indifferently:

"Dead?"

"No, she had just slit her wrists when she was found, and she was saved after being rushed to the hospital, but she’s still in a coma now."

Was it the impact of today’s news that made Qin Nianwan unable to cope, or was she just trying to use this thod to delay her departure from the country?

No matter the reason, the result was the sa; Qin Nianwan couldn’t leave for now.

Fu Shinian: "I see."

After hanging up the phone, Qiao Yu imdiately asked, "What happened?"

"Qin Nianwan attempted suicide."

Although he had completely understood what kind of person Qin Nianwan was, as a doctor, Qiao Yu was still sowhat moved. Of course, he saw the situation purely from a dical perspective:

"How is she now?"

"She’s not dead, she made it through."

Ji Nanfeng: "That’s a pity."

Qiao Yu: "..."

----

For the whole day, Su Mu sat in Jiang Bei’s apartnt, watching news about Qin Nianwan fernt and spiral out of control on the internet. She knew that the initial video was exposed by Wei Shaoqin and, having expected such a move since he discovered her affair yesterday, Su Mu didn’t try to stop it as she felt Qin Nianwan deserved it.

What she didn’t expect was that the news of Qin Nianwan’s pregnancy and childbirth from two years ago would also be exposed soon after.

Only a few people knew about it. While it might be possible for the dia to dig it out, given the timing, Su Mu didn’t believe it was a coincidence. Thus, the only logical explanation was that Song Yi, who heard the news yesterday, was involved.

Song Yi didn’t have the daring to unilaterally leak this news to the dia, so it must have been Fu Shinian in the end.

For two years, Su Mu had known but not ntioned it out of consideration and to preserve his dignity. Thus, even though she beca the "other woman" in everyone’s eyes, she never thought of disclosing it to clear her na. Yet, who would have thought that Fu Shinian would expose it himself?

Doesn’t he care?

No, he does care. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have wished her dead over her photos with Wen Han.

Still, he did it.

Su Mu couldn’t fathom his reasons.

If she couldn’t understand, she’d rather not think about it. There are too many inexplicable things in the world; she can’t be obsessed with them forever.

For the following whole week, Su Mu did not leave the house, staying in Jiang Bei’s apartnt like a child left behind. She didn’t think about those useless things anymore and just waited, waited for Fu Shinian to reach out to her or for soone to send her a settlent on his behalf.

Perhaps because she was prepared for this, her heart had beco exceptionally calm. When Jiang Bei wasn’t at the hospital, they would chat and cook at ho, and life passed by rather pleasantly.

Two days later, the list for Jiang Bei’s overseas fellowship was finally confird. What was unexpected was that the departure date was set for the second day after the Lunar New Year, not before the New Year as Jiang Bei had thought. Su Mu felt that was quite good, as her family and friends all hoped she would stay in the country for the New Year.

Yet Jiang Bei was not happy at all; instead, she seed rather anxious and uneasy.

The day after the list was confird, Jiang Bei made a decision. She decided to go ahead to the country where she would pursue her fellowship. Everyone found this incredible, and under Su Mu’s persistent questioning, Jiang Bei shared her worries:

"Do you think I am useless? Maybe what Rong Shen said was just an idle threat, yet I am constantly on edge?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"I don’t think so. I believe he is soone who acts on his words."

Jiang Bei let out a sigh, looking utterly downcast:

"That’s why I decided to leave early, otherwise I think he would..."

"But he hasn’t sought you out these days, has he?"

Strangely enough, ever since he forcefully kissed Jiang Bei, he hadn’t appeared again, not even a phone call. It seed as if he had completely lost interest in her; however, such behavior did not bring any relief to Jiang Bei. Instead, she felt that it was the calm before a storm.

"I can’t bet my innocence on a stroke of luck, or I’ll regret it for the rest of my life."

Su Mu no longer opposed Jiang Bei’s decision to leave early, but she did not believe Rong Shen would let it go:

"Your fellowship abroad isn’t a secret. Are you sure Rong Shen won’t follow you once he finds out?"

Upon hearing this, Jiang Bei grasped her short hair, verging on collapse:

"What bad karma did I accrue to encounter so many bad romances? Can’t heaven send soone reliable?"

Su Mu was seeing Jiang Bei in such a state for the first ti, clearly affected by her recent romantic troubles. Unfortunately, Su Mu herself had made a ss of her marriage and couldn’t offer Jiang Bei any good advice.

In the end, Jiang Bei still decided to leave early; she couldn’t just sit back because she feared Rong Shen might follow her. She scheduled her departure for February 5th, two days before the Spring Festival, believing it to be a foolproof plan. Yet, it ultimately didn’t happen because the day after she booked her ticket, Su Mu received a call from the sanatorium.

It was a rare sunny day in Shen City since the start of winter. The streets were busier than usual, with the sounds of joy and laughter perating through the car window into the somber cabin. Jiang Bei drove carefully, glancing at Su Mu, who sat in the passenger seat, from ti to ti.

She had been silent since receiving the call as if she had lost the innate ability to speak. Her pale complexion almost rged with the white down jacket she wore, but she never cried.

Jiang Bei reached out to hold her hand firmly, trying to pass on so warmth, but her hand was cold, so cold that Jiang Bei couldn’t warm it up.

"Susu, talk to ...’"

Su Mu heard Jiang Bei’s voice; she knew she was worried about her. She didn’t want that; she even rembered clearly that Jiang Bei was about to leave Shen City for further studies abroad soon. She couldn’t let her worry about her own affairs, nor could she delay her plans. But Su Mu couldn’t utter a single word, her body and mind seed to be separated, utterly out of control.

When Song Yi forcefully opened the door to Fu Shinian’s office, Fu Shinian was talking to the old lady, who seed to have sensed sothing recently and kept urging Fu Shinian to bring Susu back ho. She said it was fine even if they didn’t stay -- she just missed Susu and wanted to see her. Fu Shinian had yet to offer his reassuring words when Song Yi suddenly appeared with a frantic, urgent expression that made Fu Shinian’s heart skip a beat, unexpectedly losing his rhythm.
