"I understand," Wen Han said quietly, "Whatever the cause of this matter is, I have wronged you. I will give you an explanation and reply as soon as possible. If anything beyond our control happens later on, and I need to appear to explain things to Mr. Fu,"
"No need." Su Mu interrupted him, her voice trembling, "I don’t need it."
Her urgency revealed her nervousness. Wen Han looked at her, so words simply no longer appropriate to say.
Ti fell silent for a few seconds before Su Mu bit her lip:
"I’ll leave first."
"I’ll walk you out."
"No need." She looked at him resolutely, "You just said you understand, we aren’t suitable for any further contact."
Wen Han’s step halted abruptly; he looked at Su Mu, understanding her wariness.
He had never thought about intervening in Su Mu’s life, but he had never imagined that the two of them would beco strangers who never et again. Yet, the events of the previous night, orchestrated by soone, were like a knife severing the only link between them completely.
There was no longer any reason for them to et, not even an excuse to be found.
Wen Han felt as if his chest was blocked by a stone, suffocating, but apart from uttering a single syllable "okay," he knew any more words would be inappropriate.
Before Su Mu turned to leave, Wen Shaoyuan ran out from the room and blocked her way, his gaze full of confusion:
"Su Sister, are you leaving?"
All of Su Mu’s resolve started to show cracks the mont she saw Wen Shaoyuan. She held back her emotions, nodded, and squatted down in his gaze, raising her hand to gently stroke his hair, smiling slightly:
"Yes, Su Sister is leaving and won’t co back again. You must study well and grow up, okay?"
Wen Shaoyuan had never been seen crying by Su Mu, but at this mont, after she made her announcent, his eyes instantly reddened, tears swirling within them as though he was trying hard not to let them fall.
Perhaps in the world of adults, there are many things that Wen Shaoyuan could not understand, but at this mont, he completely understood what ’never co back again’ ant.
There was nothing lacking in his material life, but his emotional world lacked motherly love and companionship. Even if Su Mu could not beco his mother, in Wen Shaoyuan’s eyes, the figure of his mother was modelled after Su Mu. In his world, the image of a mother was Su Mu’s figure.
And now, she was leaving.
"Su Sister, is there nothing I could say that would make you stay?"
Su Mu’s eyes reddened, she touched his face, wiping away the tears that had fallen:
"I know, I promised to always be with you, and breaking a promise is a very bad thing. If I could, Su Sister wouldn’t want to be such a person, but now I have no choice, I can only break my promise to you. You can bla , you can even hate , none of that matters. I only hope that in the future you grow up healthy, and even if you encounter unhappy events, never choose to run away from ho. Your dad, your grandparents, they truly all love you."
Wen Shaoyuan did not make a fuss, did not act willfully by clutching onto Su Mu to keep her from leaving, nor did he ask why. After Su Mu finished her lengthy speech, he simply nodded, with a look of half-understanding:
"Okay, I promise you."
Facing no other choice, Wen Shaoyuan’s sensible deanor finally brought tears to Su Mu’s eyes. Wen Shaoyuan reached out with his little hand to gently wipe them away before he softly said:
"Sister Su, can I call you in the future?"
Su Mu’s shoulders trembled, but she gave no response.
Perhaps not wanting her to linger in such an atmosphere, Wen Han tily intervened, "Shaoyuan, co here."
Wen Shaoyuan looked at Wen Han, then at Su Mu in front of him, seeming to understand, but still, he reluctantly took steps toward Wen Han. The mont Wen Han held his hand in his palm, the dam of his emotions finally showed signs of breaking. He hugged Wen Han tightly, his voice choked, but his words were directed at Su Mu:
"Sister Su, I understand now. I’ll be good from now on. I’ll study hard, eat well and even if I encounter sothing unhappy again, I won’t run away from ho. I’ll also listen to Dad, control myself not to call you, and if I miss you, I’ll take out the figurine you gave and talk to them, I believe they can all hear , Sister Su... you don’t have to worry about ."
After a few seconds’ hesitation, Su Mu finally got up from the ground, using all her strength to control herself from looking back at Wen Shaoyuan as she briskly walked away.
The sound of Su Mu’s departing footsteps ended up piercing Wen Shaoyuan’s most sensitive nerve at the bottom of his heart, causing him to beco distraught in Wen Han’s embrace. Wen Han stooped to pick him up, and he tightly hugged Wen Han’s neck, incessantly asking why, but ultimately, Wen Han couldn’t provide a perfect answer.
No matter the explanation, the fact was that Su Mu had left, never to return.
After leaving the Military Region Compound, it took Su Mu a long while to hail a taxi. She reported the address of her Jiang Bei ho and went to find Jiang Bei, her eyes fixed on her phone the entire journey, hoping yet dreading that her phone would ring with a call from Fu Shinian. Yet, by the ti she arrived at her destination, her phone remained silent.
Two n in black stood at the entrance of Jiang Bei’s place, startling Su Mu at first, but she quickly realized they were likely sent by Ji Nanfeng and cald down. The trouble was, they didn’t recognize her and wouldn’t let her pass, so Su Mu had no choice but to call Jiang Bei.
A few seconds later, Jiang Bei opened the door from inside and warmly welcod Su Mu. Su Mu had thought Jiang Bei would scold the n in black, as she loathed being restricted, but instead, she was polite and courteous, thanking them for their hard work.
Once seated on the living room sofa, Su Mu asked:
"Are they people Ji Nanfeng sent?"
Jiang Bei nodded helplessly:
"He doesn’t understand human speech, and with my own strength, there’s no way to send these two away. Besides, they’re just following orders. Even if I’m dissatisfied, I can’t take it out on them."
Su Mu gave a faint smile:
"That’s probably for the best, at least it gives peace of mind. No matter what kind of person Ji Nanfeng is, I think he, like , doesn’t want anything bad to happen to you."
"Alright, let’s not talk about my troubles," Jiang Bei deflected with an air of not wanting to continue the subject, then looked at Su Mu: "Let’s talk about you. It’s rare for you to co to on your own, and especially at this ti. Did sothing happen?"
Su Mu always admired Jiang Bei’s perceptiveness, but even so, she didn’t know how to begin explaining the day’s events, especially since the other person involved was her own cousin.
But at this mont, Su Mu didn’t know who else to turn to other than Jiang Bei.
