In the fifth period of the night
Outside of Qingshan County,
Under the pitch-dark sky, amidst the wind and rain, the mountains stood ink-black.
Like a giant beast with an abyssal maw opened wide, mysterious and terrifying.
Suddenly, a light of fire appeared in the distance within the murk.
Although the fla flickered in the storm, it never went out.
Gradually,
The light gathered more and more.
Like stars plunging into the sea.
Heading towards Qingshan County.
When the fires rged into a dragon, the wind ceased and the rain stopped; below the distant city silhouetted against the horizon, a morning sun broke through the dark clouds, casting thousands of golden rays that cleared the heavens and earth.
The daylight spread, illuminating the land.

They were a group of villagers with faces weary and panic-stricken!
When these villagers saw the bright daylight, beholding the distant city,
So fell to the ground, weeping aloud.
So embraced each other in overwhelming joy and tears.
Others bowed respectfully towards the mountains and forests behind them, praying fervently.
There lay their “Protector”!
It was he who slew the demons and purified the defiled, and they had preserved their lives.
More and more people joined in,
Praying in their hearts, chanting silently.
They did not know the na of that noble person,
But they knew that against the cruel and fierce Demon,
He had declared his title.
“Qingshan County, Mountain Patrol Military Officer!”

One of them, with a gong beside him, likely a watchman, said with interest:
“Hey, the word has spread.”
“You probably don’t know, but many people in our county received the news yesterday.
Those gentry who cherish their lives, well, packed up their things and left the city, leaving us poor folks in the dark.”
“Even if we did know, what difference would it make?
We’re just wretched souls with cheap lives, and it doesn’t matter where we flee to.
Nobody cares whether we live or die in these troubled tis,”
he said, shaking his head numbly.
Hearing this, the short jacket man suddenly raised his voice.
“That’s not true!”
Realizing he got a bit carried away, he embarrassedly chuckled and lowered his voice:
“You don’t know, but when so many people from Yunlu County flooded into Langdang Mountain to escape, all the Demons in the mountains ca out, devouring people everywhere.”
“I heard that a great figure appeared and saved these people from danger, silencing half of Langdang Mountain’s Demons.”
“You guys just think about this great person…”
The short jacket man got so excited towards the end, he was spitting everywhere, trying to articulate the greatness of this person.
But as soone with limited vocabulary, his dusky face turned red and he couldn’t quite get it out.
However, he was quickly interrupted by the watchman at the next table.
The watchman leaned in, eagerly asking:
“That impressive?”
“May I ask the na of this great figure?”
The short jacket man was a bit frustrated at being interrupted, but upon hearing the question, he puffed out his chest,
“Then you probably don’t know this – that great person is the rumored Mountain Patrol Military Officer!”
“Ah, I’ve been too busy talking!”
“Old Man Wu, bring three liang of wine and half a jin of at.
Us poor saps feel a bit more at ease knowing our county has such a person, so today I’ll drink an extra two liang!”
As he called out, a voice responded.
“Alright!”
Shortly after, an old man carrying a warm jug of alcohol and a plate of at set them down on the short jacket man’s table.

Saying this, the old man chuckled and walked away.
The short jacket man laughed heartily, thankful as he poured himself a drink.
And in that mont, the old man approached a corner of the tavern.
At the table, a figure wearing a straw hat was eating and drinking.
Old Man Wu ca up to him, face smiling and body slightly bent, and said: “My Lord is indeed fortunate.”
Hearing this, the figure under the straw hat looked up and turned his head.
It was Chen Yuan, who was famished after a night of fighting.
Chen Yuan, hearing Old Wu’s words, was sowhat dumbfounded: “Fortunate?
I’ve been fighting all night till my hands cramped from killing!”
Old Wu, full of emotion, said: “My Lord, you’ve toiled in battle for the safety of this city’s people.
It is indeed hard work, but the common folk are grateful and chanting your na, praying for your blessings!”

Chen Yuan chuckled wryly,
“Old Wu, you always know how to comfort people.”
“Perhaps!”
He said, rising to his feet.
“I’m off!”
And he left the tavern.
Old Wu watched as this noble figure walked away.
A smile remained on his face.
A good man indeed!
Surely, he is blessed!
At this mont, soone called out “Shopkeeper!”
“I’m here!”
Old Wu imdiately answered, casting one last glance at the retreating figure, then went off to busily attend to his shop with a cheerful deanor.
