Chapter 224: Chapter 179: The First Person I Saw After Returning to Beijing

In the following three days, Chen Cheng’s life was monotonous yet comfortable.

There were no social engagents, nor were there the noise and turmoil of the city.

Money seed useless here; all he had was i Xiang by his side.

Warm morning light spilled over the rice paddies, with a breeze stirring up waves of wheat.

Chen Cheng and i Xiang were standing there, making the final touches to the newly erected scarecrow.

Chen Cheng placed a straw hat on the scarecrow’s head, then carefully tied a red scarf around its neck.

i Xiang stood by, her face flushed and her eyes smiling.

“All done,” Chen Cheng clapped his hands, “Look, it matches pretty well.”

i Xiang took out a towel to wipe Chen Cheng’s sweat, “You’ve worked hard.”

“I’ve never done this before either. You’ve worked hard these few days too.”

Hearing this, i Xiang silently handed him a cup of water, a trace of lancholy flashing in her eyes.

Today was the day Chen Cheng would return to his country; she had known since the night before but never wanted to admit it.

Chen Cheng took the cup, looked at i Xiang, and hesitated with his words.

“i Xiang, I…”

i Xiang forced a smile, interrupting him: “It’s alright, it’s okay! You will co back, right?”

Chen Cheng nodded with a smile, “Of course, I promised you I would.”

i Xiang rested her head against Chen Cheng’s chest, “Mhm.”

The two of them said nothing more, just quietly watched the scarecrow in the field.

At that mont, the sound of a car horn ca from afar.

i Xiang’s body trembled slightly, and Chen Cheng’s gaze turned toward the direction of the sound.

A black Toyota sedan drove slowly up and stopped at the edge of the field.

Chen Donghai got out of the car, respectfully opened the door, and waited for Chen Cheng.

Holding Chen Cheng’s hand suddenly tightened.

And her bright, large eyes reddened.

Chen Cheng pinched i Xiang’s cheek, “I should go.”

“I know…” i Xiang lowered her head.

She took several deep breaths to stop her tears from falling, then squeezed out a smile, “Brother Cheng, let see you off.”

“Okay.”

The two walked out of the field.

i Xiang squatted down and gently picked up a bucket beside her, gently pouring water over Chen Cheng’s feet covered in mud.

Chen Cheng tried to pull his foot away, “I can do it myself, it’s dirty.”

i Xiang shook her head, stubbornly cupping water in her hands to carefully wash the mud off his feet and legs.

The water was ice cold, her hands were warm.

The gentle i Xiang always moved Chen Cheng in an indescribable way.

After cleaning the mud, i Xiang took out another towel and dried his feet, helped him put on socks, and shoes.

“All done, Brother Cheng.”

i Xiang looked up, trying hard to smile, but her swollen eyes betrayed her inner turmoil.

Chen Cheng took her hand and walked toward the parked car.

“I’m really leaving now.”

i Xiang nodded emphatically, tear drops falling onto the asphalt road, blooming into tiny black flowers.

Chen Cheng let go of her hand, turned around, but i Xiang hugged him.

“Brother Cheng…”

Chen Cheng turned back and embraced i Xiang, “Wait for to return.”

i Xiang clung to Chen Cheng, choking out, “I will, you must take good care of yourself.”

Chen Cheng lifted her face and kissed her forehead, then finally let go of i Xiang and decisively boarded the car.

The car slowly started moving, i Xiang ran a few steps following the car, with the mud on the road marking her footsteps, until she couldn’t run any further and stopped.

She waved towards the direction the car was heading, “Brother Cheng, I’ll wait for you to co back!”

Her voice was carried to Chen Cheng by the wind.

Chen Cheng looked back; the petite i Xiang was getting smaller and smaller.

She stood there until she could no longer be seen.

i Xiang’s hand, held high, stiffly dropped.

She turned back to look at the scarecrow Chen Cheng had dressed up, as if Chen Cheng had never left.

“Scarecrow, you’ll always be here waiting, and I’ll also be waiting for him to return.”

Her voice was thick with emotion, and her gaze emptily stared into the distance, “He’s really gone now.”

Unable to hold back, i Xiang hugged her knees, and tears uncontrollably flowed down again.

At 3 PM, two hours before boarding.

Sitting in the car, Chen Cheng watched unfamiliar streetscapes pass by his window, snapping a few photos.

Now, the won by his side had changed to Xia Yubing and Tong Jialu.

Having not seen them for several days, the sisters were also struggling.

Especially at the sight of Chen Cheng busily replying to ssages and taking pictures, with an occasional smile on his lips, which made them feel their place in Chen Cheng’s heart had to shift back.

“Old… Brother Cheng.”

Xia Yubing couldn’t hold back and spoke, even changing her proudest nickna.

Chen Cheng put away his cellphone, “Hmm?”

“Is it that you…” she hesitated, “don’t want to go?”

After speaking, Xia Yubing lowered her head, not daring to look directly into Chen Cheng’s eyes.

Chen Cheng smiled, “Why wouldn’t I want to go?”

Tong Jialu, in the front passenger seat, also turned around, “Miss i Xiang…”

Chen Cheng was silent for a mont.

Indeed, the experience i Xiang brought him was unmatched by any other girl so far.

“i Xiang, she is indeed very special.”

Xia Yubing’s heart skipped a beat, “Then…”

Chen Cheng looked out the window, his voice low, “But she can’t be the reason I don’t want to go.”

Xia Yubing looked up, her eyes full of confusion, “Then you’re ignoring us because…”

“Yeah, I want a kiss, and you didn’t give one,” Tong Jialu pouted.

Chen Cheng pointed outside the car window, and as the car gradually slowed down until it stopped.

Both won followed the direction of Chen Cheng’s finger, their eyes wide.
