Issac knew he was being too hard on Kayla and should give Calan a chance, he was simply being protective of his sister. With his father gone, he had to take up the role of taking care of the family, and that included filtering those with ulterior motives or not. And those he deed worthy of association.
However, it dawned on Issac that he was a big hypocrite considering he was dating a dark Fae horse shifter. His association with Maxi alone could endanger his family if found out. But then, he was an adult and could handle the consequences. Kaya was still a youngling and needed his guidance — in his eyes.
After Kayla’s outburst, he decided to get to know Calan first before passing judgnt, and what better place to do that than here? So when his ears picked up footsteps coming in their direction, he turned towards the source with great anticipation.
If that was Calan, then the kid did not seem so bad. His blonde hair was a tell-tale trait of the Autumn court, although other Fae courts do co close to possessing the sa feature, Issac had a discerning eye for his own kind. If the both of them ended together, then Kayla would be able to strengthen the Autumn magic of her future babe which was weakened as a result of the intermarriage between their parents.
Issac was still in the middle of assessing the young fae when Calan stepped aside as if another person had been hidden away thanks to his broad form and the figure fully stepped into view, a sudden jolt of unease seizing him.
By the gods, no.
It was Anya.
The sensation was unmistakable—a plumting feeling as if his stomach had montarily abandoned its place. This can’t be happening.
Oma sensed her son’s apprehension and followed his line of sight, releasing a sigh, a visceral reaction to the unexpected turn of events. Issac was frozen in shock and Maxi had her eyes on the Fae, yet to comprehend the reason behind the tension in the air. With the way Anya was giving her a dirty look, the elderly Fae knew it wouldn’t be long now and she will find out.
This was not how this evening was ant to go.
Anya in question halted when she ca into the room, the excitent on her face fading away and morphing into a scowl. Of course, she had her source — not Kayla who almost slapped the door in her face — that inford her of Issac’s arrival — and the female he ca with.
Anya had denied it. It was impossible. She refused to believe that Issac would bring a female ho knowing it could only an one thing; he was serious about her. She had dressed up so quickly and paced across the balcony thinking of an excuse to co by.
Issac was not stupid and would know she was spying on him and did not want to co off as desperate. She knew Issac hated clingy females. Not to ntion, both of them had not been on the best terms lately. Not after that the incident, which did not go according to plan.
Anya just could not understand Issac. He had no problem sleeping with other females and then when she offered her body to him, albeit with a little help, he gave her the cold shoulder. It annoyed her as hell when she recalled their last eting. But she was not giving up.
Lucky for her, she spotted Calan from afar and knew he was coming to see Kayla stuck to his side. Sadly, her worst nightmare finally ca true and the bitch was truly in Issac’s house, even having dinner with Oma?! It was way harder for Issac’s mother to warm up to just anyone.
Anya couldn’t conceal the loathing in her eyes; her gaze was afla. Hatred coiled within her like a dormant serpent, waiting for the opportune mont to strike. Anya wanted to grab the female by the hair and drag her out. She does not belong here. She was not a mber of this family. She — Anya — was.
However, Anya schooled her expression, "Issac... " She looked at her target with a sweet smile that didn’t touch her eyes, not with that female making herself comfortable in this house.
"Anya," Issac let out a disgruntled sound. He was not comfortable with her presence.
Maxi finally spoke up, "You know her?"
Issac looked at Maxi guiltily and was about to offer an explanation when Anya cut him off.
"Of course, Issac and I know each other, right from our diaper stage till now. We are very close friends." She emphasized.
Confident that she had sowed a seed of doubt in Maxi’s mind, she finally introduced herself, "I’m Anya, Issac’s closest friend and you are?"
Maxi’s expression was unreadable even as she said, "Maxi, Issac’s fiancée."
Anya nearly stumbled back from the shock, staring at Maxi with wide, unbelieving eyes, "That’s impossible!" She gasped loudly.
"Then I guess you’re not as close to Issac as you claim to be," Maxi gave a smug reply.
Anya looked like soone just slapped her on the face and it didn’t help matters that Maxi lifted her hand at that mont, tactically showing off the ring on her finger before running her hand through her hair.
Anya felt her world swirl in that
In that heart-wrenching mont, a disorienting vortex of emotions pulled her into the depths of despair. No, this can’t be! But it was the case. Nor did it make it easy for the weight of devastation pressing upon her chest, each breath a struggle against the overwhelming tide of anguish and disappointnt.
Who said two couldn’t play at this ga? Maxi was not stupid and had lived enough to recognize outbursts of jealousy from the female gender. She was too old for these silly gas. The horse shifter knew Issac well enough and trusted him not to play with her heart — not unless he wanted to die by her hands. She will not co to any stupid conclusions until he explains himself.
Kayla finally strode over, raising the palm of her hand in the air, "I did not invite her," She said to her brother, Issac.
She was innocent.
