I had just helped Lena back to her room when a sharp, broken scream cut through the house.
It was Harper.
The sound was high and desperate.
My mother stiffened instantly. "Riley... your uncle..."
I stepped in front of her before she could move toward the door.
"Mom," I said firmly, "you’ve spent your whole life letting the Wilchers use you. Do you really want to keep living like that?"
She froze.
"You treat them like pack. Like blood. But what have they ever done except drain you? Is that what family is supposed to be?"
She lowered her gaze.
"In the past, you endured it because of Grandma. But Lewis already made sure she’s safe. She’s out of their reach now. You don’t owe the Wilchers anything anymore."
Her hands trembled slightly.
"Just now," I continued, my voice steady, "if I hadn’t stopped him, that so-called father of yours would have hit you. You’re carrying a child. And he still raised his hand."
Tears filled her eyes.
"It’s not fair," I said quietly. "Just because you’re a woman doesn’t an you deserve to suffer. You gave them everything. Without you, their entire pack would have collapsed years ago. You deserve to live for yourself. At least once."
I guided her to sit down and poured her a glass of water.
"Drink. Calm down."
She nodded slowly. "Okay. I’ll listen to you."
"Trust ," I whispered. "I would never harm you. Everything I’m doing is to protect you."
Suddenly, she gripped my wrist tightly. Her eyes searched my face.
"Why are you being so good to ?" she asked softly.
The question caught off guard.
There was sothing deeper in her tone. Sothing almost probing.
"You’re my mom," I replied gently. "Who else would I protect?"
She looked at for a long mont, like she wanted to say sothing else. But she didn’t.
I pulled her into a careful hug, mindful of her stomach.
"Focus on yourself and the baby," I said. "Leave the rest to . I’ll make sure you get out of this bond. You’ll have a new life. A clean start."
She closed her eyes. "Okay."
"I’ll check downstairs," I added. "I’m worried Lewis might go too far."
The truth was, I knew exactly what kind of storm he could beco.
When he sent upstairs, it wasn’t kindness.
It was protection.
He didn’t want to see what he was about to do.
Quietly, I slipped out of the room and walked toward the staircase. I stopped at the corner, hidden by the shadow of the wall.
From there, I could see everything.
The living room below felt different.
Harper lay on the floor, his body twisted awkwardly. Theo’s boot pressed down on his left hand, pinning it against the marble tiles.
Harper’s face was pale, drenched in sweat.
In Theo’s other hand was a knife.
The blade reflected the light, cold and steady.
Benjamin and Linette stood to the side, their faces drained of color. The arrogance from earlier was gone. What remained was fear.
Lewis sat in the center of the room.
Still in his wheelchair.
Still composed.
But sothing about him had changed.
The air around him felt dominant. Controlled. Like a silent command pressing down on everyone present.
He didn’t need to raise his voice.
His presence alone forced submission.
Harper whimpered. "I I didn’t an it..."
Lewis didn’t look at him imdiately.
Instead, he adjusted his cuff slowly.
"Who," he asked calmly, "hit my mate?"
The word mate rolled off his tongue with quiet authority.
Theo pressed his boot down harder. Harper scread again.
I swallowed.
My heart should have been scared.
"Is this the hand?" Theo’s voice was low and rough, like sothing barely held back.
His boot pressed harder on Harper’s wrist.
Harper cried out.
Linette shrieked, her voice breaking. "What are you doing to my husband? Let him go! This is insane! I’ll call the po "
She never finished.
One of Lewis’s n moved faster than my eyes could follow. Linette was thrown aside like she weighed nothing. She hit the floor hard, her head striking the table leg with a sickening sound.
Blood ran down her temple.
No one hesitated.
Lewis’s guards did not care whether you were man or woman. If you threatened their Alpha’s mate, you paid.
Linette whimpered on the ground.
Theo lifted the knife.
Benjamin finally stepped forward, his pride shattered. "Mr. Hale... this was our mistake. I apologize on their behalf. Please... spare Harper just this once."
Lewis looked at him slowly.
His expression didn’t change.
"Who do you think you are?" he asked softly.
The room went silent.
Even the air felt tight.
Theo adjusted his grip, ready to bring the blade down
"Wait," Lewis said calmly.
Hope flashed across Harper’s face. "Mr. Hale, I know I was wrong. I "
Lewis’s eyes flicked toward the knife.
"This is too small," he said lightly. "Go to the kitchen. Bring a cleaver."
A maid gasped.
I felt my breath catch in my throat.
That was the mont I understood sothing fully.
The Lewis I knew the composed, patient man who spoke softly to , who brushed my hair back and called his mate was only one side of him.
This...
This was the Alpha.
Controlled. Cold. Decisive.
He turned his head toward the trembling maid as if nothing unusual was happening.
"You’re making soup, aren’t you?" he said calmly. "Check the stove. Don’t delay the Celebration Dinner. And Riley likes sweets. Prepare mango sorbet."
The maid stared at him in disbelief.
He could order dessert in the sa breath he ordered blood.
"Yes... sir," she stamred, rushing away.
Theo returned with a heavy cleaver.
Two bodyguards forced Harper down against the coffee table. His face was pale. His body shook so badly he could barely breathe.
"I’ll do it myself," Lewis said.
Theo handed him the cleaver without hesitation.
Harper broke.
He started begging, sobbing, his words tangled and desperate. He even lost control of himself in fear.
Lewis watched him without emotion.
"Your regret," Lewis said evenly, "does not co from realizing you were wrong. It cos from fear of consequences."
He rested the flat of the blade against Harper’s hand.
"If given the chance again, you would make the sa choice."
Harper cried harder.
Lewis’s voice remained steady.
"I never intended to be your enemy, Mr. Wilcher. But you crossed a line when you laid a hand on her."
His gaze hardened.
"As her mate, I will not tolerate disrespect."
The word mate carried weight.
Not romance.
Claim.
Ownership.
Protection.
The room felt charged, like before a storm breaks.
"Take this as a lesson," Lewis said quietly. "Never provoke another man’s mate."
The cleaver ca down.
A sharp, sickening thud echoed through the living room.
Harper’s scream tore through the house.
His thumb fell to the floor.
Linette fainted instantly.
Vere and Rubie clung to each other, shaking.
Benjamin trembled with rage and fear. "Lewis! How dare you!"
Lewis turned his head slowly.
The movent alone made Benjamin fall silent.
"Benjamin," Lewis asked calmly, "would you like to try next?"
His voice wasn’t loud.
But sothing ancient stirred in the air.
Dominance.
Authority.
An unspoken command that made even grown n shrink.
Watching from the staircase, my heart pounded violently.
Part of was horrified.
Another part of felt sothing deeper.
Protected.
Claid.
The instinct inside responded to him. Not in fear but in recognition.
This was the man who would burn the world before letting anyone touch again.
And in that mont, I understood why no one in the pack ever dared to challenge Lewis openly.
Because when he decided to act
There was no rcy left in him.
