Chapter 80: _ Dead Prisoners

Rhett

~~

After leaving Isleen’s place from questioning Liam, he had his mind in chaos. The rhythmic thrum of the car engine couldn’t drown out the persistent hum in his head. It wasn’t just the dull ache from the interrogation; it was the lingering mory of Isleen’s kiss.

That... that was a mory both sweet and unsettling. He knew he should be dissecting Liam’s words, searching for inconsistencies, for hidden clues, for whatever it was that was off about that boy. More so, if it all his words were to be trusted or reliable.

Yet, his focus kept slipping back to the touch of Isleen’s lips, the vulnerability in her eyes. And even her defiant to him. Nobody in the pack of her status could dare handle him in such a way. Not to ntion the oga.

The fact that she could be defiant with him piqued his insteerst in her even more. He’d finally mark her tonight, and maybe then, the insistent craving within him would finally settle.

Now, focusing on the investigation, he couldn’t help but fear for their Ravenwood pack based on what he learned from Liam. It ant the fairies weren’t what they said they were.

It ant the fairies could kill too. If this got out, if the wolves found out that a fairy or maybe so fairies were hunting them down and eating their flesh, hell would break loose.

He could already picture the ss that would follow that. Hell, this information needed to be handled with care. Isleen’s boy must keep his mouth shut for now.

Yet, that boy had an aura to him that unsettled Rhett. Rhett was a master at reading people. Liam’s case was a whole new case on its own.

The pack was already on edge after the recent attacks, and this would only fan the flas of paranoia. Rhett slamd his fist on the steering wheel, frustration tightening his throat. The investigation into Mr. Fenrir’s death was going nowhere fast. Principal Thorne was a two-faced snake who was more concerned with reputations than the safety of his students.

Seeing how he had subtly tried to pin the bla on Isleen, Rhett shut his eyes and forced them open as he had to focus on the road.

The thought that Isleen would be innocently blad sent a surge of protectiveness through him. Isleen might possess a stubborn, independent and fierce spirit. But she was as innocent of murder as a newborn pup.

He wouldn’t let anyone pin this on her, not Thorne, not the pack, not even a wayward son that she thought she had.

He needed a new strategy. Farkas was already scouring the official investigation files. Everyone in the preccinct were on the edge but sothing felt...incomplete.

His finely honed instincts that had been sharpened over years of leadership scread at him. There was more to this than a simple fairy killing wolves.

And then there was Reed. If the boy truly was working with the vampires, who killed him? Why would the vampire murder their spy?

One thing Rhett thought was believable from Liam’s words was that Cora was suspicious. She was letting them in on lesser than she knew.

Questions kept on piling higher. They were all like a brick wall demanding answers. He’d break them, one by one.

The familiar building of the pack headquarters ca into view as Rhett pulled in. The moemt he stepped out, soldiers who looked both solemnand respectrul, saluted him as he walked past.

Inside he found Alistair who rushed to him with greetings.

"Gamma Rhett, you’re welco back, sir."

Rhett replied the greeting with a grim nod.

"Farkas?" He asked, heading straight for his office.

"Down in the vampire dungeons," Alistair replied, with a hint of unease in his voice. "Handling a situation."

Rhett’s brow furrowed. "Situation?" He halted.

The re sound of that made Rhett’s stomach churn. A situation ant sothing had co up. That sothing – Rhett knew couldn’t be good.

Alistair hesitated, then blurted out, "It’s the vampires, sir. They are all dead."

Rhett’s blood ran cold. Those were a solid source of information that they were looking forward to. "Dead. How?" He asked with gritted teeth. "We had a plan – an interrogation, a chance to gather information. And now..." He trailed off.

Alistair shook his head. "We don’t have much intel yet, sir. The Military Advisor will brief us when he returns."

Wait?

Hell, he’d be tied down with the strongest of ropes before he could wait.

His jaw clenched. "I can’t wait for him. I’m going down there."

Alistair held up a hand, trying to call Rhett to bay with. "I understand your frustration, sir, but I think it’s best you stay back because the Alpha and Beta are currently down there with Military Advisor Rhett."

Everyone knew about the hostility between him, The Alpha and the Beta. Rhett was a man of principles and just wouldn’t condone the Alpha’s shenanigans.

"Nonsense." He mused and made to walk away.

Alistair reached out a hand, but Rhett brushed it aside. He stord through the precinct, the murmurs of soldiers following him like mosquitoes. The oak doors of the dungeon groaned open as he entered, revealing a scene that froze him in his tracks.

A crowd of soldiers stood around the entrance to the holding cells with a low murmur of disbelief and unease booming in the air. The Alpha with a grim face, stood next to the Beta and Delta with Farkas by their side. The soldiers snapped to attention as Rhett entered, their salutes echoing in the sunken space.

Rhett gave them no less than a gruff nod as he approached the four leaders. He could already sll death in the air.

The death tolls were rising.

Farkas turned after noticing Rhett’s presence. With his gravelly voice, "Rhett. It’s about ti."

The Delta gave Rhett a nod of acknowledgnt and Rhett did the sa. Darius, however, had a scornful look on his face which Rhett ignored.

The Alpha, on his own, cleared his throat, forcing a smile. "Seems like your plan is back on the table, Gamma Rhett."

Yeah, right.
