Chapter 251: It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way

I blinked as I watched Cullen—no, Fergus —gaze at

with a predatory glint in his eyes. He wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore. It was as if he was telling

that he knew... He knew that I was onto him.

But I would not let myself get intimidated.

My hands went to my jogger’s pants pocket, clutching the lighter there tightly. I held my breath, anticipating his next action.

But just then, he placed a palm on the wall behind , and it seed like the predatory glint in his eyes had disappeared and was replaced with a more ’friendly’ one.

"You needed so air?" Fergus chuckled softly, his eyes lingering on my neck for a few seconds before moving to my eyes. "Away from what?"

His hot breath pricked my skin, causing the hair on my neck to stand on end. I gulped, cursing my body for this weird reaction.

What was this bastard doing? Was he... Was he going to kiss ? I wasn’t blind, I could see his eyes trailing constantly from my eyes to my lips.

However, when it felt like the pressure in the room was about to reach a new tipping point, I heard a click on the door. Before I could shift away from Fergus, Kylo walked in.

Damn it, Fergus didn’t even try moving away!

Kylo turned his gaze to us just then, and I watched the radiant smile that’d been on his face when he stepped in disappeared and got replaced with a suspicious scowl.

"Uhh... What the heck did I walk into?" Kylo arched an eyebrow, his eyes moving from Fergus to .

He gave

a dirty look and didn’t even try to hide the disappointnt on his face.

I stuttered as I tried explaining myself. "K– Kylo, it’s not... It’s not what it looks like! I– I... We were just–"

He didn’t even give

a chance to explain and walked away, heading for the stairs. He brought out his phone from his pocket and began typing sothing and soon after, he was giggling like a little girl, forgetting about what he’d just witnessed.

Moon goddess, have rcy!

"Cullen, what the heck is wrong with you?!" I snapped, using my palms to try to shove him away.

When he didn’t budge, I squeezed myself away from him and tried getting the heck out of there, but was pulled back by his strong grip on my wrist.

"Ah! You’re... You’re hurting ." I muttered, my voice getting shaky as my eyes t Fergus.

For a brief second there, I felt I saw a red light flash within those eyes. And all through this, his smile didn’t even falter. Not once.

Suddenly, Fergus blurted. "It doesn’t have to be this way, Isleen." His voice was a whisper, hitting the back of my head like a wrong note from a musical instrunt.

He pulled

closer, but I struggled, giving him a warning glare.

"What are you talking about?" My voice beca firr, my eyes eting his defiantly.

I’d be damned before I let this monster take advantage of .

He sniggered, his eyes unwavering from mine still. We kept eye contact for what felt like an eternity until he eventually loosened his grip on my wrist.

He didn’t say anything and walked away, his shoulder brushing against mine. As my eyes followed his receding back as he went upstairs, my breathing started becoming shaky again.

I held the wall beside

and placed one hand on my chest as the anxiety began overwhelming .

"I’m not gonna cry. I’m not gonna fucking cry!" I told myself, as I felt the pressure gripping my heart like an anchor.

My eyes stung as tears welled up in them, but refused to fall. I wouldn’t let them fall. I wouldn’t let my emotions tie

down.

Never again.

After a few minutes or so, I was able to regain control of my breathing and brought out my phone. I turned it on and stared longingly at Rhett’s contact.

I’d saved it as ’Gamma Rhett’ for fear that soone would look through my phone one day and figure out that I was seeing soone new. But did I really care anymore?

Right now I wanted nothing more than to sleep in his arms. To hear his voice lulling

to sleep, reassuring

that everything was going to be fine.

I placed my thumb over the contact button for a while, pondering if I should call him.

Eventually, however, I closed my eyes and kept the phone back in my pocket. I shouldn’t bother him, especially since he was currently in the middle of a very important eting.

I waltzed to the kitchen instead, taking out a box of milk from the freezer and pouring myself a glass. It was a habit I’d begun getting used to ever since Lupe died and I was left in the house alone.

And it actually worked to help

sleep sotis, so I secretly hoped that tonight would be one of those ’few tis’.

After downing the content of the glass in one gulp, I sighed before dropping it on the counter. I needed to go to bed.

I climbed the steps and tried listening to Kylo and Fergus. They seed to be having a pretty heated conversation, but I didn’t want to get into it.

Sothing pulled

to go get Kylo away from that monster. To tell him the truth about him. But would he believe ?

After standing in front of their room door for a few minutes, I shook my head and walked into my room, shutting the door silently behind . I proceeded to lock up the door from the inside, took off my clothes, and had a quick bath.

As I got into my nightwear and fell on the bed to catch so sleep, I found out that I couldn’t drift away into Dreamland. No matter how tightly I closed my eyes, my special ability was at work, allowing

to sense the dark presence only a room away from .

"Protect ," I whispered a prayer as I hugged my pillow tightly, hoping for sleep to co get .
