Rael could only stand there, staring blankly at the new quests.
"You’ve gat to be kidding ." There was no way,no damn way he was taking a step beyond the boundary ward sigils. Yet again, he had never really failed to accomplish a quest, and he had no idea what would happen if he ignored one. Besides, the rewards could be very useful.
’But it’s too much of a risk’, Rael thought, clearly trying to deny his reckless nature, which was already conjuring reasons to charge out.
’Never really slayed one before, let alone a hundred. No, too risky,’ he debated within himself. He knew full well that even a single Withered spawn was equivalent to a Rank 1 beast, and they were rarely alone. But yet, his battle appetite was rising.
"Are you okay?" Ayobe tapped Rael on the shoulder, waking him from his thoughts.
"Huh? Yes, yes I am." Slightly startled, Rael saw the looks Xaphxan and Ayobe threw at him due to the many changes in his expression.
"You don’t see that as the best strategy to preserve the arrays?" Iyvre asked, raising her brows.
"Not that I don’t," Rael replied hesitantly while scratching his hair. "It’s just... I believe I personally can take another approach."
Xaphxan, hearing that, simply sighed. He could tell from his past experience with his boss that Rael was going to take a mad approach.
"What could that be?" Iyvre asked.
"I plan on... fighting the Withered head-on," Rael uttered casually. The two sisters and Xaphxan froze as they stared at him, while from the tower-like structure, Yasmin shook her head.
"Lunatic."she muttered
Iyvre turned her gaze away from Rael. She saw a bit of an advantage there, even though it was reckless. "That’s reckless, but it is efficient," she muttered.
"What do you an efficient? This is the Withered! We’re only ant to et them head-on during the final night to reduce the relentless attacks on the sigils," Ayobe asked with concern.
Iyvre knew all that, but she was hungry to test her new strength. "I know, but rember we are in the Zodiac Woods. There are many spawn points within it. It is possible that during the last night we might have more than one wave, and I don’t think we’d be of much help to the arrays by then. So I say we conserve its energy for as long as we can."
’Oh, now she’s mad too,’ Xaphxan thought hopelessly.
Rael nodded to what Iyvre said, even though that was anything but his reason for choosing that approach. He was just about to add a charismatic speech when loud roars erupted from the woods beyond the compound
"What’s that?" Xaphxan asked nervously. Rael squinted his eyes before rushing to climb the tower to look beyond the fences.
Though the woods were dark, the red moon cast a gloomy glow through the trees.
"Is that..." Ayobe trailed off, she, Iyvre, and Xaphxan having followed Rael up the tower.
"Yes, it started," Yasmin answered with a serious look as they all prepared ntally for a swarm.
The roars of the beasts soon turned into shrieks of pain and sorrow.
Rael hardened his expression as he pulled out a long arming sword he’d gotten from one of the pouches of the dead apostles. He tightened his grip on the sword.
"I’ll go stay by the first sigil," he said seriously, then turned to Xaphxan. "You co with ."
"What... ?" Xaphxan exclaid in shocked surprise. ’Why ?’ he thought.
"Yes. You’ll provide support in case I get surrounded by the swarm. I believe you should have three tries in you now," Rael added with a cold glint in his eyes that made Xaphxan rethink his refusal. He simply nodded while sighing.
’Still a devil’s contract.’
"I’ll be coming with you," Iyvre added, bringing forth her blade as well, causing Yasmin to roll her eyes as she muttered, "a Crazy bunch."
"If that’s how it’s going to be, then I’ll co too." Ayobe, seeing no other way, wasn’t about to leave Iyvre to face the withered swarms alone.
"Don’t look at ; I’ll be right behind you guys," Yasmin added from the side before they could turn to her .
Though not expecting them to agree to charge at the withered with him, Rael didn’t mind that at all .

A few ters away from the compound, an aether saberworg whimpered in pain as it struggled to crawl forward. It was bleeding from a large gash that tore from its back to its hind leg. Yet, its eyes showed no signs of pain, but of fear ,pure primal fear.
The aether saberworg stopped crawling as the cause of its fear now blocked its path. The very thing that caused its fear and the large gash on its side was its own pack mbers.
Yes They were now rged together by a black goo that had first consud their pups before latching and digging into the pack mbers that had tried to attack it in rage. It broke their bodies from the inside , tearing through their organs and ripped out of their orifices, rging their bodies into a mass of flesh and bone.
The new shapeless creature had the five heads of the pack mbers scattered across its bloated form. The thing wiggled as if in excitent that it was about to consu another al. Its jagged paw, which held multiple black claws that occasionally spilled black blood, stomped heavily on the aether saberworg’s head, crushing it in a wet crunch. It then opened its many maws to consu it and add the crushed head to the other five on its body.
The Withered spawn roared in a guttural shriek. With many similar shrieks responding in turn as the Withered spawn, and many others elsewhere, headed in the sa direction , forming a swarm.
