Chapter 135: Chapter 114: All Attain Entry Grade; Making a Proposition

At Cheng Zongyang’s words, Li Lu’s heart skipped a beat. He was just about to speak when he saw the aningful look in Cheng Zongyang’s eyes. It seed he understood what he was implying.

His surprise gave way to suspicion, then to a grave expression as he began to contemplate the matter.

But he soon shook his head slightly and said with resignation, "At most, I could beco a constable. That’s just a junior official with a sliver of power in the County Town, not a true official."

"What about a Chief Constable?" Cheng Zongyang pressed.

Li Lu smiled wryly. "It’s not as simple as just being strong enough. While you need the strength to be a Chief Constable, that alone doesn’t get you the job. Furthermore, the position is usually filled by soone recomnded by the local Noble Races, or appointed directly by the County Magistrate.

"Take the current Chief Constable, Wang Tianfeng. He’s from the Wang Family and has the strength of an Eighth Grade Martial Artist, which is how he landed the position. It was a mutual decision between the County Magistrate and his family. That’s why the Wang Family sides with the County Magistrate, and why Wang Tianfeng is now the one in charge of the Wang Family."

Cheng Zongyang asked another question, "What if you were to side with the new County Magistrate?"

At this, Li Lu fell silent once more.

He understood what Cheng Zongyang was getting at and asked in return, "You want

to beco the Chief Constable?"

Cheng Zongyang smiled. "Just as you’ve heard, the powerful families in the County Town have been all but wiped out. Chang Younian’s goal was to gain complete control of the County Town to make it easier for him to operate. He just never imagined he’d be transferred away, which is a windfall for the new County Magistrate.

The new County Magistrate is basically being handed control of the entire County Town on a silver platter, without having to lift a finger.

If the new County Magistrate wants to make a na for himself, he’s going to need people. The remaining local powers might try to ally with him to gain his support and avoid being purged themselves.

But knowing Chang Younian’s thods, he probably didn’t make it easy for his successor to take over. In fact, the new County Magistrate might be walking into a complete ss.

On the other hand, as you just said, with so many governnt officials and chief constables dead in the County Town, they’re desperate for people.

If you side with him, this new County Magistrate will surely entrust you with important responsibilities. And as long as your strength is up to par, doesn’t that an you could be promoted to Chief Constable?

An Eighth Grade Martial Artist with the title of Chief Constable would put you on equal footing with the leaders of the Gangs and Noble Races. It ans your power would increase imnsely. So, Uncle Li..."

Here, Cheng Zongyang paused before asking pointedly, "Have you ever thought about becoming the Chief Constable?"

Li Lu laughed. "What official doesn’t want to climb the ladder? Even if I’m not technically one. What you’re suggesting is very plausible. But one of the conditions for becoming Chief Constable is to reach the level of an Eighth Grade Martial Artist. How can you help

achieve that?"

Cheng Zongyang gave a slight smile and stood up. "Let’s see how the situation develops. If it’s truly feasible, I can try to find that person and get you a way to advance to an Eighth Grade Martial Artist. I’ll be on my way now."

Li Lu raised a hand to stop Cheng Zongyang. He stared at him with a burning intensity and said solemnly,

"If you can help

beco an Eighth Grade Martial Artist, I will give my all to secure the Chief Constable position. I don’t care what your motives are. Once I’m Chief Constable, I will help you unconditionally with anything within my power!"

Cheng Zongyang laughed. "No need to be so formal, Uncle Li. As long as you want to climb higher, and as long as I’m able to, I’ll help you. We’re supporting each other."

With that, he extended his hand.

Li Lu didn’t understand the gesture, but he extended his own hand in response, and Cheng Zongyang shook it.

"Here’s to a successful partnership. Also, I’ll be back in seven days. The new County Magistrate should have arrived by then. Try to gather so information.

Also, to quickly advance to an Eighth Grade Martial Artist, I’ll need the corpses of so Martial Artists—no fewer than six. The stronger, the better, and they must have died within the last day. Help

find out about any Martial Artists on the verge of death. Even prisoners will do."

"There are certainly plenty of those in the prison. Alright, I’ll ask around."

Li Lu nodded. ’Is he going to use Martial Artist corpses to make so kind of dicine that boosts Cultivation?’ he wondered.

After leaving Li Lu’s ho, Cheng Zongyang left the County Town under the cover of night.

He had learned pretty much everything he needed to know about the situation in town, so there was no reason to linger.

He left the County Town and made his way to the Chaotic Burial Mound.

He shook his head slightly upon seeing the sickly green will-o’-the-wisps burning in parts of the Chaotic Burial Mound. ’Anyone who didn’t know better would be scared to death by the sight.’

He quickly went to the spot he had marked, dug up the Soul Crystal Stone, and inspected it.

Low Tier Soul Crystal Stone

Collection Progress: 1000/1000

Seeing the fully charged Soul Crystal Stone, Cheng Zongyang was overjoyed.

’Just as I thought. A place like this is the only way to gather the required souls so quickly.’

He went to the other two locations and, as expected, they were also full.

After stowing the three Soul Crystal Stones, Cheng Zongyang hurried back to the Inner Mountain Pass.

On the mountain path, he took out ten bags of rice and flour, placed them on a wooden sled, and began dragging them down. He had a legitimate excuse for this; every ti he returned from an outing, he would bring back rice and other supplies that he had actually retrieved from the Wilderness World.

However, as he neared the encampnt, he saw the courtyard gate glowing with firelight and heard the faint murmur of voices.

’They’re still up?’ Cheng Zongyang wondered, quickening his pace. It was almost midnight.

The adults heard the commotion and all turned to look toward the entrance.

They were happy to see it was Cheng Zongyang and rushed over to help him move the ten heavy bags of rice and flour to the storeroom.

The two elders, as well as the won and children, had already gone to bed. Only four n of the older generation and two of his cousins were still up chatting.
