"What is it?" Aiden asked, "I don’t like that look in your eyes. I’m not going to like what you say either, right?’
"Very right." Matteo sucked in a deep breath before he quickly dealt the finishing blow. The quicker it was done, the faster Aiden would get over it. "We have ample evidence to believe that Emline is your half-sister."
Aiden staggered back as if struck. His face paled automatically, and his hands began to shiver. He shook his head, slowly at first, then more wildly as the words sank straight into his bloodstream and entered his mind.
No, no, no!
He was so shocked, he hadn’t even realized he nearly scread them out loud. Matteo hurriedly clasped a hand over Aiden’s mouth, the sa way Aiden’s mother did to shut him up. If circumstances weren’t so dire and fucked up, Aiden would find it highly ironic that his mother and Matteo had similar ways of dealing with him.
But he could find no humor in this situation. His knees buckled, and he would have hit the floor if not for Matteo grabbing his shoulders to hold him up.
"You’re shitting right?" Aiden whispered weakly as he stared into Matteo’s eyes in frenzied desperation. "This is a lie, right? Yes, it must be, you’re trying to get revenge on because I didn’t tell you and Alia the truth about Emline’s baby... Yes... That’s it... It’s a lie..."
His voice grew steadier, and he seed to calm down the more he thought about it.
It was a lie. Emline couldn’t be his half-sister. It simply wasn’t possible.
Matteo felt increasingly sorry for Aiden. His half-brother was clearly going mad from the realization that Emline was his half-sibling.
"Let’s talk more inside," Matteo said with a heavy sigh. Currently, there wasn’t anyone in the parking lot, but he didn’t want to take any chances.
So, he dragged Aiden up to their apartnt― his brother had a pair of working legs, but it seed like he had lost all control of them, from the way he staggered and stumbled over air. It was like he was completely drunk!
After so effort, Aiden was successfully dragged into their ho. Matteo shot him a warning glance.
"Keep your voice down; Alia is currently sleeping."
She was not, but Aiden wouldn’t know. He only nodded dumbly as he sank into the couch, his eyes staring up at the ceiling.
"I’m guessing you must have so questions," Matteo prompted when minutes had passed and Aiden had not made a single peep. Frankly, he hadn’t seen his brother fall into such a deep silence in his entire lifeti.
The silence was getting a little too unnerving.
Finally, Aiden turned his head slightly so he could look at Matteo. "You weren’t shitting when you said Emline was my half-sister, weren’t you?"
"No, no I was not," Matteo said, a faint hint of apology entering his tone. "I would not be able to think of such an idea to shock you."
"How long have you known about it?" Aiden asked woodenly. "Was it before you knew I was the father of her child? Did you and Alia laugh about it―"
His face twisted in fear and hurt the longer he thought about it.
How long were they sitting on this knowledge? Were they waiting for him to fuck up this badly and then collect the benefits?
"Don’t be ridiculous, we only found out about it recently when Emline got hospitalized," Matteo said.
Admittedly, it was on the sa day when they found out Aiden was the father of Emline’s child.
"She needed a blood transfusion, and the blood types of Benjamin and Annalise Hawthorne could not have produced a child with her blood type. If anything, I have you to thank for this. If you had not escalated the situation, Emline would not require hospitalization and none of us would have found out."
Aiden’s mouth fell open. "So this is my fault?" He squawked out.
"Technically yes, but I would consider it more as a blessing in disguise," Matteo said frankly. "It’s better that we found out now, than for you to marry Emline because of your unborn child."
At Matteo’s words, Aiden felt the urge to retch. As though a dam had been broken, all the thoughts he had been trying to suppress burst out of him.
Emline was his half-sister.
He had slept with his half-sister.
He got his half-sister pregnant!
And if Annalise Hawthorne had her way, she would drag him to the altar and make him marry his half-sister!
"Don’t puke here," Matteo said warningly as he caught sight of the greenish pallor of Aiden’s face. Still, he hurriedly got a plastic bag, just in case.
"I’m trying not to," Aiden croaked out. "The fuck? I committed incest!"
"Unknowingly," Matteo couldn’t help but point out. "It was accidental."
"God must be punishing for fucking up you and Alia’s relationship," Aiden lanted sadly as he slowly curled himself into a ball. It seed like he was slowly rocking himself on his heels. "Why didn’t I just tell her to fuck off! Why did I stick my dick into my sister?!"
"Don’t put it like that." A grimace crossed Matteo’s face at the crudeness. "You didn’t know. No one did. And if not for a series of coincidences, this secret would have never seen the light of day."
"Oh god. No wonder my mother said that she didn’t have anything to worry about when it ca to Benjamin Hawthorne!" Aiden began to raise his voice as his mind slowly connected more dots. "They’ve been together for decades at least!"
"Apparently, they t in school," Matteo said. "They were in love, but Horace Hawthorne did not approve. Did you know your mother was a scholarship student?"
"No, no I did not," Aiden said faintly. "Then again, Mom’s pretty smart. Why didn’t I inherit any of her brains?! Bloody fuck!"
"Shush!" Matteo scolded, but it was too late. The bedroom door opened to reveal Alia, standing before them in her nightgown, staring impassively at him.
