"I have already done my best." After a long ti, he finally heard an answer in Bai Liyan’s voice.
"What did you say?" Qi Cheng looked at him in disbelief. "What do you an by that? What do you an you did your best? Why didn’t you tell you succeeded? Why didn’t you tell all those things..."
Qi Cheng grabbed Bai Liyan’s lapel fiercely, his fingers seed like they would snap.
For a mont, he had the illusion that this was a dream, it should just be a dream, a dream he had not yet woken up from.
"Aren’t you a genius?" He glared at Bai Liyan, his eyes red with anger.
Bai Liyan did not speak. His face no longer held the confidence and brilliance that once belonged to a genius.
Ji Yunhuan and Su Zi waited outside the ICU for an hour, and no one inford them of the result. Both firmly believed that Chenchen was fine and would get better.
Qi Cheng walked over, Ji Yunhuan looked at him, "What did Dr. Bai say?"
Qi Cheng did not reply, just stood beside her and looked at Chenchen. All the equipnt was on Chenchen, who looked like a puppet, not a living person.
At this ti, Chenchen’s face, buried in the instrunts, still looked like an angel untainted by dust.
Qi Cheng did not speak, and Ji Yunhuan did not think too much of it.
Bai Liyan’s surgeries had never failed.
Naturally, Chenchen would be okay.
Qi Cheng looked at her gently watching Chenchen. At this mont, besides the doctors who perford the surgery, only he knew the truth.
But, he did not know how to tell her, how to open his mouth and tell her that Chenchen would not wake up again?
-
On January 8, at 3:17 PM, Chenchen passed away at the hospital.
To Ji Yunhuan, it was a day like a nightmare.
Not any less than the day she ca ho and saw her parents had committed suicide together.
When she had high hopes and thought Chenchen would get better, the dical staff in the ward ca out and told her the result.
She almost instinctively grabbed Qi Cheng’s hand, "Qi Cheng."
Qi Cheng’s heart tightened. He looked at her. Before he could open his mouth to comfort her, he heard her say, "Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Wake up."
"Yunhuan." He grasped her hand, pulling her into his arms, holding her tightly, wanting to beco her pillar.
Ji Yunhuan pushed him away with empty eyes, her angry voice trembling, "Where is Bai Liyan? Where is he, bring him out here, bring him out here for !"
She did not know where the strength ca from. She pushed him away and walked towards the staff.
The staff knew she was emotional but was frightened by her deanor. They could not say where Bai Liyan was at the mont.
Qi Cheng grabbed her hand, "If you want to see him, I will take you."
But he knew that even if she saw Bai Liyan, it would not change anything.
After knowing him for so many years, Qi Cheng had never seen such a Bai Liyan—a man defeated by failure.
When Ji Yunhuan appeared at the door, Bai Liyan was still sitting there. She walked over, anxiously glaring at Bai Liyan, "Why are you sitting here? Chenchen is like that, and you don’t go see him? Aren’t you a genius? Haven’t you never failed? Why don’t you go save him? Why are you sitting here?"
Bai Liyan sat on the chair, silent, letting her grab and pull at him. He no longer looked like the confident man he once was.
Despite not getting any response from him, Ji Yunhuan did not intend to give up because only Bai Liyan was her only hope. If this man was at his wit’s end, if he had given up, then what about them... what could they do?
"Say sothing! Tell , Chenchen will be okay. Every ti you said he would be fine, he got better. Say it!"
Bai Liyan was shaken by her, but he still did not utter a word.
He thought he could do it. It turned out, there were things in this world he could not do.
Qi Cheng stood aside, not knowing how to comfort such a Ji Yunhuan.
Especially before the surgery, he had reassured her repeatedly that Bai Liyan was trustworthy.
Had he known it would end like this, he would rather not have done this damned surgery.
Impatiently shaken by her, Bai Liyan finally spat out three words, "I’m sorry."
Three extravagant words!
They drained the color from Ji Yunhuan’s face completely, "Are you kidding ? You have never failed!"
"But I failed." Bai Liyan’s eyes were filled with conflicted pain. Proud as he was, he did not want to admit it. He had indeed failed.
For the past four hours, he did his best. He tried hard.
"You are a genius!"
"I used to think so too, but now I know I am not. I’m sorry..." He realized he was not a genius. He was just a man exalted too high, thinking he would never fail. He was too proud. Otherwise, he would not have suggested the surgery.
Even though they all said the surgery had little hope, he still firmly believed he could do it.
He even thought he could restore Chenchen’s health.
However, he failed!
Failed utterly.
"You have saved so many people, why? Why Chenchen? Why did you have to fail this ti? Tell ! Aren’t you a doctor? Everyone believes in you, but why do you have to fail this ti?" Ji Yunhuan felt her body and soul had separated. The person speaking here was not her.
Her voice was so cold and icy, mingled with despair.
She looked at Bai Liyan in disbelief. Bai Liyan did not respond to her anymore.
In the end, Qi Cheng dragged her out of Bai Liyan’s office.
Su Zi stood outside the ward, biting her lip, tears streaming down continuously.
She thought Chenchen would wake up and wait for her forgiveness. But she never expected that her persistent refusal to visit Chenchen would beco her lifelong regret.
Ji Yunhuan, coming out of Bai Liyan’s office, was extrely quiet. She looked at Chenchen’s face revealed under the lifted white cloth, staying silent and not speaking.
She looked at her brother’s lifeless face, rembering the beautiful scenes she had imagined outside the operating room. She thought Chenchen still had a future. She thought he would ultimately find happiness after so many years. But little did she know, fate was often cruelly relentless.
Qi Cheng had people handle the aftermath, accompanying her in the corridor. She sat on a chair, not speaking, not making a sound, just staring at her hands. These hands had signed the surgery consent form. These hands caused her to lose him completely.
Her eyes were dry. She could not shed a tear. She wanted to cry, but no tears would co out.
