Angel had sensed the n even before they entered the hall of their house, not recognizing them, and seeing them holding blades, he had called to Evenly to tell her, but his voice only made the n look up at the railings, noticing him looking down at them.
"They’re up there, get them!" ordered one of the n, who looked like the one leading the rest.
Evenly felt her heart give a thud, and she got up to her feet, pulling Angel away from the railings to her side.
"What’s going on, Evenly?" ca Rav’s voice from behind the door. "Who ca in?" he asked, pushing himself to stand despite the pain that beca intense with any small movent he made, but he ignored the pain when he knew his wife-to-be and little nephew might be in danger. He could hear the voices of n he didn’t recognize and their loud footsteps running up the stairs.
"There are so n in the castle, Rav. They’re coming up here," Evenly said in a whisper, pushing Angel behind her skirt and standing in front of the door. From their speed and the aura radiating off them, they were vampires and not the humans who were fighting against Nightbrook. What could bring vampires in here when many didn’t dare to cross into the castle for fear of the duke? Evenly wondered, looking around her.
There was no point in running when the n could easily see the direction they would take from the railings of the long corridors. Though she might be pregnant, it wasn’t going to stop her from trying to protect her people.
"Enny..." Angel called as he clutched her skirt when the n finally climbed up, now looking at them and walking toward them. His own body had gone through the pain of being rogue and was still aching, and seeing the n made Angel realize he might not be able to protect his Enny from all of them without Papa here.
There were six of them in total, and every one of them were turned vampires.
"Who are you? What do you want?" Evenly demanded, placing her hand over Angel’s head as he peeked from behind her skirt.
The n ignored her question like she hadn’t spoken to them.
"Is she the one the master says to kill?" asked one of the n to another, who sized Evenly up and down and then nodded.
"She’s the previous wife. I know her from the hair," replied another who was lean and tall, and whom Evenly imdiately recognized as one of the vampires who had worked for Josh in the past when they were still married. Imdiately, realization dawned on her about who must have sent these n here. Could it be her previous husband? If his worker was here, it could only an he was responsible for sending them here.
Josh had always been a proud man, and no doubt he had sent his n here because of what had happened in the market few months ago.
Evenly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at Josh’s audacity of sending n into the duke’s castle. He hadn’t had enough yet from everything he had done to her in the past and now wanted to kill her.
’How many are they, Evenly?’ ca Rav’s voice in her head as he spoke through their link.
’Six of them,’ she replied, racking her mind for a way to fight off six vampires, as running away wasn’t an option here. Had she no baby in her womb and another one behind her skirt to consider, Evenly would have stood a chance against fighting them off and getting away. But even though she could try to fight, she feared losing her child from any reckless behavior.
And Rav, who was behind the door, knew that as well. All these months she had tried not to do anything that would cause strain to her body and result in losing the child, which she had finally gotten after years. Six of them were too much for her to handle, and the last thing he would want was for her to be hard.
Despite the pain eating away at his heart, Rav said, ’Step away from the door. Let handle them.’
Evenly didn’t like the sound of that, thus she said, ’You can’t co out of that room yet, Rav. It took so much effort to calm the corruption.’
"Get her," ordered the leading vampire to his n, who were quick to obey, and Evenly automatically grabbed Angel’s hand and moved away from the door. When the first vampire ca close to grabbing her, Evenly moved on instinct, kicking him hard and causing him to lose his balance and tumble over the railing. He scread as he went falling, hitting the floor below with a sickening thud that echoed through the hall, and the others peeked down to see their friend lying in a pool of his own blood with his head broken.
"You will fucking pay for that, bitch!" They ca at her at once, but just before they reached her, Rav, who had stepped back from the door, moved forward with such speed that the wooden fra splintered as he broke the door clean off its hinges. The door slamd into two of the n with brutal force, sweeping them off their feet and sending both of them crashing over the railings along with the shattered door.
The three remaining n froze, stunned, their eyes widening as they stared at Rav and finally noticed the color of his skin and the way his eyes flashed from white to blood-red.
"Rav..." Evenly muttered in distress as she stared at the back of his head, as he now stood in front of her, protecting her from the three vampires. He shouldn’t be outside, and he shouldn’t be straining his body that was going through corruption. The last thing she wanted was for him to go savage again. She clutched Angel’s small hand, biting her bottom lip nervously.
"Where the fuck did this one co from?" asked the leading vampire, who had not expected a rogue-looking vampire to suddenly co out of a room and stand there looking at them with dead eyes, his face covered in blood and his skin in the process of decomposing.
"I think he’s turning rogue," exclaid another as they noticed Rav’s fangs becoming bigger.
"Kill him then!" ordered their leader, but even before they moved to attack Rav, whose hunger for flesh had been poked simply by having people around when he should have been locked away, Rav snapped and attacked them first. He took down two people at once, and in no ti their screams were all that filled the halls of the castle.
The vampire leader’s eyes widened, and in the blink of an eye, he fled the place, running with all his might down the hall and out of the castle.
Evenly watched in horror as Rav devoured and killed the two. It was a sickening sight, and she pushed Angel’s head back behind her skirt to keep him from looking. She didn’t even try to stop Rav from killing the n, they had brought themselves here, but her worry was entirely for Rav, whose condition was fragile.
