Watching the sunset as he stood by the window, Lucian noticed a flickering yellow light on the window glass, appearing behind him.

I’m sure I wasn’t supposed to get any ergency letters...

He thought, walking towards his desk. Seeing the royal stamp on the envelope, he gulped.

Will they execute , now?

He pondered, a soft chuckle escaping him. He wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. They never treated him as a human to begin with and he was conscious of their contempt for him. However, he followed their orders simply because he made a promise to his mother— he wouldn’t ever try to harm the royal family who were his own blood and flesh.

[They could indeed execute you this ti. Before that, let kill that king,] Keal suggested, his voice filled with excitent. He loved anything that included bloodshed, unlike Lucian who preferred to resolve matters in a less violent manner.

Lucian did not reply and began opening the envelope, taking out the letter inside.

[Monsters have been seen at the Lyac Lake. They keep attacking commoners there. You must take action as soon as possible before they begin to rebel against the crown. No delays will be tolerated on the matter.]

"Ah," Lucian gasped as if he had just realized sothing. "I’m rely a warrior without its own will whom he cannot even afford to kill."

Scrunching the paper with his fingers, keeping it in his palm, he rushed outside.

Just then, he saw familiar silhouettes in the hallway. Curiosity picked him and he headed towards Cynthia and Suyou.

Their conversation was too low for him to hear anything. He didn’t expect them to even converse as it seed Cynthia and Suyou kept their distance whenever he had seen them together in the past.

"What could they be talking about?.." he mumbled, stepping closer to them.

"No way. There’s no way... This can’t be true."

Hearing Cynthia whisper those words in a low tone, Lucian narrowed his eyes, looking at Suyou who seed shocked by his sudden appearance.

Just as he seed to be about to warn Cynthia about his presence, Lucian simply waved his hand dismissively.

Understanding that the grand duke wanted him to leave, Suyou bowed, turning his heels and exiting the hallway.

Cynthia didn’t move an inch, as if in shock about sothing Lucian couldn’t figure out.

Hesitantly, he placed his hand on her shoulder, wondering what kind of face she would make upon seeing him. He knew very well that she had been taking care of his duties while he was recovering from Princess Arisia’s death. He wouldn’t have been able to lay down his worries hadn’t it been for her. For once, he was relieved he had married her.

As she turned around, Cynthia wore an expression Lucian hadn’t seen before. For once, he couldn’t read her expression. Her eyes were widened, her face had turned pale as if she had seen a ghost, and most importantly, she seed to have spaced out as she usually did but this ti, she hadn’t snapped out of it although he had touched her to get her attention.

Seeing her unusual behavior, Lucian held her by her shoulders, his grip slowly tightening in the hope she could regain her senses.

"Y-Your Highness," she whispered.

Realizing Lucian was holding her by the shoulders, she was conflicted about whether to push him away or keep still.

"Could you please let go?"

Although it seed like a request if one heard it, Lucian knew her too well— it was no less than an order. He promptly retreated his hands from her.

"What is this?" Cynthia asked, noticing the letter Lucian dropped while he tried to get Cynthia to co back to her senses.

"Ah... that—"

Before he could continue his sentence, Cynthia picked up the paper, reading its content. She scoffed as soon as she finished reading the letter.

"They are sending you close to Eldoria’s border, Your Highness."

"Is there anything wrong with it?" He questioned, carefully examining her hand which clenched the letter in her hand.

"Everything about it is wrong, Your Highness. But it is for you to choose. Do you wish to see or do you wish to continue following the path led by the king?"

"What nonsense are you spouting, Your Highness?" Lucian scowled, irritation evident in his voice.

"Your Highness, you know very well that..." Cynthia sighed, her mind heavy with the weight of what she knew would happen if Lucian went there.

In her past life, he had gone there just as instructed by King Valerian—and returned with grave injuries. It had been a miracle he survived at all. Back then, she hadn’t been able to reach King Alistair, which led the Eldorians to believe that the Selvarians had reignited the war, misunderstanding the army’s true purpose: to exterminate the demons attacking commoners in their land. She couldn’t allow history to repeat itself—not when she had her own plans to execute. She wouldn’t let him die this ti, especially knowing how deeply he had been affected by his sister’s death.

"I need to go. It’s the king’s order," he said, slicking his hair at the back of his head.

"You must cherish him greatly to follow his orders without any fear for your own life."

Lucian kept quiet. He didn’t cherish the king. If it weren’t for that promise, he would have killed him just as Keal suggested countless tis.

"I shall go warn the knights and prepare for our departure."

"I will co with you," Cynthia looked into his eyes, her gaze filled with determination.

"You cannot," Lucian objectly instantly without thinking twice.

"I will and you cannot stop , Your Highness. I believe you know I can fight for myself and will not be a burden to you. As the grand duchess, I will assist you in this matter because this might create a conflict between both countries."

Lucian, who understood her point, sighed in agreent. He couldn’t win an argunt against her as ti pressed. With each passing mont, demons increased and the security of both countries must be ensured.

For the sake of peace, I need to do this...
