Talia and I shared a look. I nudged my head as a signal for her to do sothing, but she ignored , having no intention of getting involved.

I’m beginning to think that Talia will leave to my ruin, maybe it’s all ladies to themselves now.

I cleared my throat to grab the hungry Lycan’s attention, who was on the verge of clearing the table.

How many stomachs does he have?

"Snow-bloods?" I questioned. That na caught my attention.

"Your people call them vampires, right?" he said with a mouthful, posing on a seat like he was familiar with this place.

"Stop!" I snapped.

Lucan’s eating action ceased. "Did I do sothing wrong, Your Grace?"

"Sir Lucan," I began in a formal tone.

"Just Lucan." He swallowed down the food. "There is no need for such formalities I want us to be friends. May I call you by na?" But then he paused. "Although I don’t think Drevon will be pleased by it."

He smirked. "He’s so smitten with you. Did you bewitch him by chance?"

"No, he bewitched himself. Whatever happened later was of his own doing."

"Goddess! I like you already. You know the order was simple a few months ago but look at where we are now. Wow!"

"What order?"

"When the humans open the gates for us, we take the Beloria, and enslave the survivors, but imagine the shock when our monarch suddenly declared he was getting married?" he shook his head.

I gulped. It was the sa recount of Drevon’s when he told I was the only reason Beloria did not fall that day.

"I also heard you survived the eting with the Dowager. Well done, well done," He praised.

"Where is the monarch now?"

"Attending his duties, he has neglected them for days."

"Why?"

He gave a look. "You."

"?" I veered my gaze to Talia for so sort of explanation.

"Did I not ntion the monarch tended to you during the period of your illness?"

A warm feeling grasped my insides. He did? Was that why he was in bed with ? I thought there was so ulterior motive to it.

"The monarch is quite busy now, there’s much to do, so I’m here to assist you with anything you need."

Lucan’s words pulled out of my thoughts.

"You an watch ?"

"Yes," he said bluntly.

I narrowed my eyes. "Hmm."

"Oh, you best prepare too."

"Prepare for what?" I asked with a sigh.

"There is a celebration in a few days for the return of the monarch, as his wife, you should be there."

I walked to the table and dragged the chair out to take a seat. "I’m not sure my presence is needed."

I may be his wife, but it was evident I was not accepted. The entire nation could be after my head if I’m not mistaken. The more reason to barricade myself in this room.

"Drevon said you might say that," Lucan amused. "You should speak with him."

I paused, closing my eyes as I murmured curses under my breath. This was the last straw for .

"I shall see the monarch."

He won this round. Annoyingly so.

~•~

I spied from the door, looking both left and right at the vacant corridor.

Talia followed my action. "The knights are gone. I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing."

"They’re stationed around but not too close. Why are we spying?"

"You’re not a helpless human in a castle full of beasts, what do you have to worry about? Before I step out of this room, I must make sure the route is safe."

"Oh!" Lucan snapped his finger. "So we should investigate the area first before you move. I got you!" Lucan walked forward, eyeing the entire place before facing . "All clear, Your Grace," he assured .

"He’s not very bright is he?"

"Shhh!" I hushed Talia. "Calling him that might be offensive."

I stepped away from the door, adjusting my attire properly. The sleeves of my gown were ridiculously long; I figured it was the style of dresses here, and I just had to get used to it.

Is it just , or is this wing surprisingly warm? And this clothing of mine was thicker than the ones the Dowager’s handmaids gave.

Thinking nothing of it, I said. "Shall we?"

Coming back to this room alive is my utmost priority.

Lucan led us to Drevon’s study. We were still within the monarch’s wing, but I had assud we would see other Lycans roaming about, yet so far there was none.

The entire place was like a ghost had taken residence here, just the knights designated at their posts were the only Lycans seen.

With a confused gaze, I eyed everywhere, but the more I looked, the more I realized there was no one.

"I didn’t expect an empty wing."

"The monarch made the entire wing off-limits; no one gets in without direct permission from him," Lucan replied.

I was about to ask why he made such drastic orders, but I found the answer on my own. Because of .

All this ti, I felt paranoid, and sleeping short just to stay alert was no use. The entire wing was...safe.

I shook my head. I shouldn’t think that way; nowhere was safe as long as I was in Valkanor. I should never forget that.

Out of nowhere, I felt eyes upon , it was like a hot fla was dumped on my back, and I was forced to halt my steps, cautiously looking over my shoulder. My heart lodged in my throat as I expected to see the owner of such an overwhelming gaze, but there was no one.

"My lady, is sothing wrong?" Talia asked, noting my distraction.

The corridors were empty, but there was a deep feeling that soone was watching . I faced Talia, who stared at in puzzlent, and then Lucan, who had the sa expression.

He’s Lycan, shouldn’t he have sensed soone watching?

But I reasoned if he didn’t, then it was just my mind playing tricks on .
