Not wanting Song Yan to see her cry, Su Lanying stood up and said, "I will go get a bowl of mung bean soup for you."

Song Yan hadn't eaten anything all morning, so he nodded and said, "Thank you."

While they were talking, Houzi stood to the side, watching them thoughtfully.

After Song Yan finished his mung bean soup and checked Su Lanying's condition, the two of them went to the east farmland to deliver lunch.

At first, Su Lanying wanted to go by herself, but Song Yan insisted on accompanying her. He rode his bicycle, and since her condition tended to worsen during sumr, a heat stroke could be dangerous.

Using his bicycle not only shortens the travel ti, it also saves her the pain of being burned by the sunlight.

After so persuasion and back-and-forth argunts, she finally relented and sat on the back seat of Song Yan's bicycle, holding a bamboo basket.

As they rode, Song Yan said, "Lanying, the road is bumpy—you have to hold on tight."

Hearing this, Su Lanying gripped the seat and replied, "Okay."

Just as she said that, the bicycle rolled over a small pothole, jolting her from her seat. Startled, she let out a soft yelp.

The mont he heard this, Song Yan stopped the bicycle and turned to check on her. "Are you okay?" he asked.

"Mn, I'm fine."

Song Yan nodded and turned back around. Before pedaling again, he reached out, took her hand, and placed it on his waist.

"Hold on tighter, or you will fall," he said stiffly.

Feeling the warmth from his lean yet firm waist, Su Lanying's face turned red. Not wanting to trouble him, she only dared to hold on to his clothes lightly.

Although he noticed, Song Yan said nothing and slowed the bicycle down.

Thanks to his reduced speed, the villagers clearly saw them riding together. They were surprised to see the sickly daughter of the Su family was able to get such a close relationship with a doctor.

While the older generation was full of curiosity, the younger generation was filled with jealousy.

Despite her illness and weak appearance, many n liked Su Lanying. The main reason was her beauty and fair skin. Another reason was her education and skill in house chores.

Whoever married her wouldn't have to worry about their children's education as she would be able to teach them herself.

As for concerns about whether she could bear children or not, few worried about that. With today's dicine, they believed she could still give birth to one or two kids.

anwhile, the unmarried won were envious because of Song Yan. They dread of marrying soone like Song Yan—young, handso, with a capital household registration, high salary, good reputations, and a promising future.

They couldn't accept that soone like Su Lanying could get close to Song Yan while he kept his distance from them.

Unaware they had beco the center of gossip and envy, Song Yan parked his bicycle under a tree near where the Su family was working.

Turning around, he saw the thin layer of sweat on Su Lanying's forehead and nose. Seeing her flushed cheeks, he pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket and said, "Here, wipe away your sweat."

Looking at the soft, clean handkerchief, Su Lanying hesitated. But before she could take it, Song Yan had already reached out and gently wiped her face for her.

Startled by his sudden, intimate action, she instinctively took two steps back.

Seeing her reaction, Song Yan froze for a mont, then realized he had acted impulsively. Embarrassed and guilty, he said, "I–I'm sorry if I offended you."

Standing three steps away, Su Lanying was silent for a while before asking quietly, "Doctor Song, can you really cure my illness?"

"Of course. Even though I'm not the lead surgeon, I will be in the operating room assisting. I will make sure everything goes well and I will make sure you are cured," Song Yan replied firmly.

"Then, about your suggestion back then—"

Before she could finish, Song Yan interrupted, "Lanying, are you talking about my proposal? Have you thought about it?"

"Doctor Song, you know about my health and my family's situation. Are you sure you want to marry soone like ? With your qualifications, many won would be willing to marry you," she said.

Song Yan frowned at her words and looked at her unhappily. After a long mont, he said, "To be honest, I'm not sure either."

"But in my twenty years of life, you are the first person to make feel anxious, worried, happy, and curious. I want to know more about you. I want to protect you, to make sure you are safe and well."

"I get excited just thinking about the possibility of seeing you. And when I don't see you, I wonder what you are doing, how you are feeling, and whether you are okay."

"When I stand close to you, my heart beats so fast, and it feels like butterflies are fluttering in my stomach. The urge to be near you is so strong that it scares ."

"Even now, all I want to do is hold your hand and hug you. I know I sound like a hooligan, but I can't stop myself. So, tell —are these reasons enough?" he asked.

Su Lanying was stunned by his sudden, heartfelt confession. She had imagined many scenarios, but nothing as direct or sincere as this.

The more she thought about his words, the more flustered she beca. When she finally snapped out of it, her face was as red as a boiled shrimp.

"You—you—"

She was completely speechless and could only repeat the sa word over and over.

Seeing how flushed she was, Song Yan grew concerned and reached out to check her temperature. The mont the back of his hand touched her forehead, his expression changed.

"Lanying, you are burning up. Are you dizzy? You might have a heat stroke," he said, worried.
