Su Lanying raised her gaze and chuckled. She looked at Song Yan and asked, "Doctor Song, you seem so confident that I will recover. It's been 16 years and it's a miracle for my heart to still be beating. What if one day my heart finally decides to take a rest forever?"

"Your congenital heart disease is curable," Song Yan insisted.

"It is, but at what price?" Su Lanying asked.

"Doctor Song, you know how expensive the treatnt is. Given my family's situation, it's impossible. It's already enough that I'm a burden to them—I don't want to be a burden to soone else," she added.

Song Yan was speechless. He wanted to tell her he could help, but when he looked into her clear eyes, he couldn't bring himself to say it.

Seeing the struggle in his eyes, Su Lanying smiled and reached for the bowl. After testing the temperature, she gulped down the dicine.

Wiping her lips, she said, "Doctor Song, thank you for your care. It's getting late—I should go now."

After speaking, she put on her shoes and walked to the door.

Before leaving, she turned back and said with a smile, "Doctor Song, don't worry about . I'm used to this, and I have long prepared myself for the worst."

Song Yan felt his heart sink at her nonchalant attitude. He was all too familiar with that expression—it was the look of soone who had already given up on life.

Before he could think, he had already chased after her.

Reaching out, he grabbed her wrist and said, "I will definitely heal you, so you are not allowed to give up on yourself. You are still young. There are so many things you haven't seen yet. Are you really willing to accept this?"

Su Lanying was stunned by his sudden action, but after a mont, she smiled and replied, "What else can I do besides accept it?"

Seeing that he wanted to say more, she cut him off, "Doctor Song, I appreciate your care and concern, but I'm really fine. I won't do anything foolish—I will simply enjoy my ti as if it were my last."

"So, don't look at with pity. I'm happy, and I'm not pitiful. I need to go now—see you next ti," she added with a sigh.

After saying these words, she pried his fingers off her wrist, gave him another smile, and walked out of the room.

When she reached the balcony, she saw Doctor Xie and asked, "Grandpa Xie, how much is the fee and dicine?"

"It's 2 yuan and 50 cents. Your dicine is on the table—go get it yourself," Doctor Xie replied.

Nodding, Su Lanying went to the living room, took her dicine, and handed the money to Li Shu.

"Sister Lanying, co back for a checkup after you finish your dicine," Li Shu reminded her.

"Okay."

After she left, Song Yan ca out and sat on the balcony. He gazed at the sky, now painted in shades of red and orange, lost in thought.

Seeing him like this, Doctor Xie said, "As a doctor, it's good to have a compassionate heart. But we are just human, and our abilities are limited. As long as you do your best, there is no need to feel burdened."

Hearing his teacher's words, Song Yan let out a long sigh and said, "Teacher, in all my years as a doctor, I have seen so many life-and-death situations. I have long accepted that I'm not a god and that I can't save everyone. But when I saw her giving up, I—"

He lowered his head and fell silent for a mont before continuing, "I don't want her to treat her life so nonchalantly. There must be a way."

When Doctor Xie heard this, he glanced at Song Yan and chuckled.

Song Yan turned to his teacher and asked, "Teacher, do you also think I'm just saying empty words?"

Doctor Xie looked at his apprentice and said, "You always know what you want. Since you have already made up your mind, why hesitate? It's not like you don't have the ability to heal her."

"But she—"

"That pair of hands belongs to you. It's your decision whether to charge for your skills or not," Doctor Xie said casually.

The mont he heard this, Song Yan's eyes lit up.

"That's right. I can write a recomndation letter for the governnt's donation program. The funds should be enough to cover her dication and post-surgery treatnt. As for the surgery fee, I can just do it for free," he muttered to himself.

Suddenly, he stood up and said, "Teacher, I know what to do now. Thank you!"

As soon as he finished speaking, he grabbed his bag and rode off on his bicycle.

Watching his retreating figure, Doctor Xie chuckled and said, "It seems the iron tree is finally blooming."

As the sun set, Chen Jianmin and his brother returned ho. anwhile, Li Chenze and Li Lingyun carried a three-layered bamboo basket filled with dishes as they headed back ho.

During dinner, Dong Li said, "Father, Mother, I want to visit my maternal eldest uncle after dinner."

Hearing this, Lu Jueyu asked, "It's already late. Why not visit tomorrow?"

Dong Li swallowed the food and replied, "I already made an appointnt with my uncle. I will co back as soon as possible."

Li Chenmo glanced at his son for a mont before saying, "When you visit later, take so mushrooms and at for your grandparents and uncles."

"Okay."

Since her husband had already agreed, Lu Jueyu said, "Mother will prepare sothing for them later."

After dinner, Lu Jueyu went to the kitchen and packed salted fish, cured at, dried mushrooms, eggs, salt, sugar, and oil into the bamboo basket. She didn't give too much or too little—just enough for them to divide into three portions.
