He let out a soft, bitter scoff. "I didn’t know your husband was such a beast. And you still want to win him back? You really want that man to touch you again....to have sex with you? Seriously, Gabe?" He shook his head in disbelief. "He treats you like this, and you still... love him?"
Gabe’s shoulders stiffened instantly, his entire body trembling as though struggling to contain sothing far larger than himself. For a long mont, he said nothing. Then, when he finally spoke, his voice ca out in a broken whisper....ragged, raw, trembling with anger and grief.
"Even if sothing was going on between you and I..." His voice cracked mid-sentence, his breathing unsteady. "It’s his fault not mine."
His hands fisted tightly in the front of Alex’s shirt, clutching the fabric as though it were the only thing keeping him upright. "He caused it!" Gabe choked out, tears brimming in his eyes. "He gets mad whenever soone else helps especially when it’s sothing he can’t do. He wants to suffer, to be helpless!" His voice rose, trembling violently with anguish. "That bastard! I hate him! I fucking hate him so much now! He’s so big with his secretary and their unborn baby whom he thought I don’t know about but yet....I never disturb him but he kept disturbing . Trying to make life a living hell for ."
Alex let out a low sigh, his expression softening despite himself. Sothing in Gabe’s voice, so fragile yet filled with such pain made it hard for him to stay detached. He lifted a hand and brushed it gently through Gabe’s disheveled hair, his tone low and quiet.
"Yeah," he murmured under his breath, his voice almost a whisper. "You should hate him."
Why do I feel so angry though that I want to kill Sabe so bad right now? Alex thought inwardly with his left hand fisted. That motherfuker! Just how long has he made Gabe cried?!
Silence settled between them again, thick and heavy, broken only by Gabe’s uneven breathing and the soft rustle of his trembling body. Then, slowly, Gabe lifted his head. His tear-streaked face turned toward Alex, his swollen lips parting as he whispered, his voice small, desperate, and trembling.
"Can you... take away, Alex?"
The question hit Alex like a blow. He froze, his hand still tangled in Gabe’s hair.
"Take you away?" he repeated, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What do you an by that, Gabe?"
Gabe’s eyes were red and glossy, their brightness dulled by exhaustion and sorrow. He t Alex’s gaze with a hollow kind of courage, his voice weak but determined.
"Take away from this beast," he said softly, his voice cracking halfway through. "Anywhere I can be safe. Please." His fingers clutched tighter at Alex’s sleeve, his desperation spilling into every word. "I know he’ll kill once he wakes up and finds still here. But if I’m gone... if I disappear before that happens, he won’t dare to cause trouble. He’s terrified of the dia and what they’d say about him if they found out he hurt a crippled oga."
Alex’s expression shifted, disbelief flickering across his face before it lted into sothing closer to pity then anger. He stared at Gabe for a long, heavy mont, words caught sowhere between his throat and his heart.
When he finally spoke, his voice ca out tight. "You could do that then," he said slowly, thinking aloud. "I’m sure Sabe has a lot of houses... so might even be in your na. You could stay in one of those for a while without him even knowing just until you feel better and decide what to do next. You can stay in the one that is far away, sowhere he can’t think of easily" He swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. "Or maybe you could stay at Fred’s house for a while. He’s your friend, after all. He’d be more than happy to take you in especially if he learns what happened to you."
Gabe shook his head almost instantly, his face crumpling with fresh tears.
"I can’t go to any of Sabe’s houses, and I can’t go to Fred’s either," he whispered, his head bowing low as the tears fell silently down his cheeks. "Sabe knows all those places. He knows to be a weak oga who can’t live without him. He knows I’ll crawl back to one of his houses since I don’t have any house of my own."
What? Alex raised an eyebrow.
"And mind you...Sabe never bought any property in my na but his instead. Even if he tells the outside world otherwise, we both know the truth. I don’t want him to find this ti around. I don’t want to appear as the weak poor oga he knows as again." His voice broke into a sob. "I just want sowhere new.....sowhere no one knows about. Sowhere even Fred doesn’t know exists."
Alex exhaled sharply, his chest tightening. He stared at the fragile oga in front of him, his heart aching.
"And where’s that? Do you have anywhere else in mind then since you can’t go to Sabe’s house?" he asked after a mont, his tone low and careful. "I can drive you there before I leave."
He sighed again, his expression hardening in an effort to mask the storm brewing inside him. Just how much has that bastard hurt you? The question rang in his head. Has he always treated you this way? Always made you feel this small?
Alex clenched his jaw, the muscles ticking as he bit down on his lower lip until he could taste blood.
Then Gabe’s small, trembling voice pulled him back to the present.
"Can’t I... stay with you, Mr. Alex?"
The words were so quiet they barely reached his ears but they were enough to make Alex choke on his own breath. His eyes widened, his head snapping toward Gabe in disbelief.
