The rows of lights on the ceiling went out one by one, plunging the theater into complete silence. When the big screen lit up, after the iconic Marvel Comics opening, the film imdiately dove into the story!
The first appearance wasn’t any of the six heroes but the main villain Loki, along with a fleeting, imposing figure in the background.
As a seasoned fan of both comics and movies, Rowan Weber imdiately recognized that figure—it had to be Thanos.
Was he the super BOSS of this film? Or the ultimate villain of the entire series?
Recalling the trailers briefly, Rowan Weber confird that the latter was more likely.
The film inherited the fast-paced tradition of Duke’s productions, with no wasted ti—directly driving into the plot and conflicts. Within the first three minutes, the villain Loki was wreaking havoc in the S.H.I.E.L.D. experintal base, simultaneously using his staff to manipulate Hawkey and others.
The opening battle was intense: gunfights, car chases, explosions, and even a falling plane—all projected on the big screen. Rowan Weber and the surrounding audience, witnessing the almost flawless special effects, could feel the full sincerity of Duke and Marvel Comics.
Why do audiences co to theaters?
The director clearly understood this, delivering the visual feast the fans most wanted to see.
"From now on, we’re at war!"
Nick Fury’s words struck like a drumbeat in the heart; many understood that with the opening setup complete, the main course was about to begin.
"What do we do now?" Agent Coulson asked Nick Fury.
No one answered—the film itself gave the answer through its title: The Avengers!
"Oh wow, she’s hot!"
A low murmur ca from the side. "Black Widow is still just as beautiful and sexy."
"Her skills are amazing too."
A rapid, fierce fight sequence followed, showcasing Natasha Romanoff’s signature combat style. She was also the key figure bringing the Avengers together.
Thanks to the groundwork laid by Iron Man and the other five films, audiences were extrely familiar with the six Avengers—their personalities and stances were common knowledge.
The film did not bother explaining or interpreting these characters, nor did it waste ti. With a fast pace, it plunged directly into the story, letting viewers witness the climax from the start, maintaining high energy throughout.
Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man, and Captain Arica all appeared before the audience.
Besides large-scale action and superhero interactions, the film used ubiquitous humor to engage viewers, including Rowan Weber.
"Next building that goes up," Tony Stark said to Pepper Potts, "I’ll hang your na on it."
Pepper’s reply: better write it on the property deed...
Of course, this kind of playful banter mostly belonged to Iron Man, who in the film was constantly misbehaving, teasing, mocking, and showing off.
"Captain Arica doesn’t seem very impressive!"
When the scene shifted to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Rowan Weber overheard soone beside him. Indeed, compared to the more prominent and flashy Iron Man, Captain Arica’s screen ti and performance seed average. Tony Stark even mocked him as an "old man with an ice cream."
Compared with the outliers like Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Loki, Captain Arica’s combat strength wasn’t particularly overwhelming.
Luckily, Captain Arica is the kind who grows stronger against tough opponents. Though not necessarily a match for the super-powered freaks, he still had combat ability, especially during the internal clash among the big three with Iron Man and Thor, which enthralled Rowan Weber—he was ecstatic.
This was the true blockbuster! This was the Avengers he had imagined!
Seeing all the superheroes gathered on the Helicarrier, Rowan Weber couldn’t contain his excitent. This mont had been long-awaited.
Of course, having all these super-powered freaks work together wasn’t easy.
They were all eccentric personalities: a pair of 90-year-old WWII veterans, a playboy genius inventor, a potentially raging uncontrollable giant, and a god from Asgard!
Bringing them together inevitably caused headaches.
Especially with Tony Stark, constantly joking and sarcastic, Rowan Weber sotis wished he could punch him just to vent—but he admitted Iron Man’s character was naturally the easiest to shine compared to other superheroes.
"My dad actually praised this guy endlessly," Tony Stark mocked Steve Rogers. "He really should keep making ice cream!"
"Take off your armor, what are you left with?" Captain Arica fired back.
"Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist..."
Like any team, going from a ragtag group to a unified force required a process of adjustnt.
"What kind of team are we? Putting us together only causes chaos—we’re ticking ti bombs."
This line perfectly described the start.
How could such eccentric freaks unite?
Past Hollywood films had long offered the answer, the one audiences most loved and accepted, and this film followed that simplest, most effective approach.
A major setback and the death of a mutual friend naturally beca the best catalyst for uniting them.
The collaboration of Iron Man and Captain Arica, the clashes among Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor, Black Widow’s close combat with Hawkeye—all drew continuous cheers from the audience and even rounds of applause.
"Fantastic!" Rowan Weber’s eyes didn’t blink as his mind raced. "Better than expected—definitely the best film of this sumr!"
"Duke did an outstanding job," a Yahoo Entertainnt reporter said amid the applause. "His film remains as excellent as ever."
Another reporter, though silent, nodded vigorously in agreent.
The film was already more than halfway through, exceeding their expectations. Stripped of unrealistic artistic pretensions, this was simply the perfect blockbuster for the sumr season.
The pacing was incredibly fast—almost suffocating—leaving the audience little ti to think. One dazzling battle after another unfolded without causing visual fatigue, like a sumptuous banquet continuously laid out before the viewers by Duke.
As the portal opened on the screen, the final battle began, set at Hollywood’s most destructible landmark—Manhattan!
The Avengers, having endured setbacks, prepared themselves, and the ultimate showdown was about to erupt.
"I have an army!"
"We have Hulk!"
Even at this mont, Tony Stark’s incessant quips kept coming, drawing bursts of laughter from the audience.
"Even if we can’t save Earth, we will absolutely avenge it!"
Earth under threat again?
Earth saved once more by superheroes?
This the—Hollywood’s perennial comrcial blockbuster subject—never goes out of style. The reason is simple: audiences love it!
Rowan Weber had lost count of how many tis his blood had been stirred, but when the most exhilarating scene appeared, he did what every other audience mber did.
Applaud! Applaud with all his strength!
For the first ti, the six Avengers truly stood together!
Captain Arica, Steve Rogers! Iron Man, Tony Stark! Hulk, Bruce Banner! Thor! Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff! Hawkeye, Clint Barton!
With rousing, space-opera-like music, the six stood in a circle, roaring their battle cries!
Even if they couldn’t protect Earth, they would absolutely avenge it!
The Avengers had assembled!
Though the six superheroes varied in strength, each fully showcased their abilities. Duke skillfully fused this group of previously incongruent heroes into one cohesive unit on-screen.
Rowan Weber was extrely satisfied with the film, finding almost nothing to criticize. Although the final battle’s aliens weren’t particularly strong, they served as the perfect backdrop for the Avengers.
Moreover, this followed the classic Marvel superhero movie formula: godlike protagonists and weak antagonists.
The audience naturally identified with the heroes; the villains being pathetic didn’t matter.
As a typical superhero blockbuster, the film would never create a ssy or nonsensical ending. Naturally, the most crowd-pleasing conclusion appeared: the dim-witted S.H.I.E.L.D. council launched a nuclear missile, Iron Man sent it through the portal, the nuke destroyed the alien mothership, Black Widow closed the portal, Iron Man fell back to Earth before it shut, and Hulk saved him...
In short, this was a standard Hollywood-style happy ending!
As the film drew to a close, the love-hate duo Thor and Loki returned to Asgard, while the other Avengers went their separate ways, awaiting the next assembly!
Rowan Weber too looked forward to the Avengers’ next gathering!
The two companions beside him were also discussing when the Avengers would reunite.
anwhile, the two journalists on the other side debated how to extract from Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. the timing of the Avengers’ second assembly.
Countless voices reached Rowan Weber’s ears, nearly all praising the film. Ninety-nine percent of the audience, like him, were thoroughly satisfied with The Avengers!
As the screening ended, the entire audience stood, clapping vigorously, their applause lingering long and unbroken.
