Chapter 43: Chapter 43

[Song Recomndation: Joji - Die For You.]

"I will marry you, not out of duty, but out of love."

Arthur didn’t waver as he confessed his true feelings. He wasn’t sure if his Madam would believe him, and he didn’t dare to ask for too much.

The confession itself was already a privilege that he might never get in the future.

He didn’t want to waste his chance.

anwhile, Winter tried hard to downplay his firm statent.

"You don’t need to say that just to make

feel good, Arthur. I’m not fragile enough to deny reality," Winter said calmly. She didn’t seem affected by his words, but if her chest had a window, Arthur would see her heart beating fast.

"I am serious, Madam. I will marry you out of love," Arthur said firmly. He slowly reached Winter’s hand and rubbed it gently, careful not to hurt her with his strength. "If we ever get married, I will devote my life to you. I will make you happy, Winter."

"A-Arthur..."

Arthur knew his Madam was getting uncomfortable, but the reddish hue on her cheeks encouraged him to continue.

"So, if you ever think about starting anew, please consider , Winter. I’ll be here, waiting for you for the rest of my life."

Arthur completed his confession by kissing her hand. He kept eye contact the whole ti, making sure that his Madam saw his sincerity before he let go of her hand.

"Sorry if I made you uncomfortable, Madam," Arthur said as he returned his gaze to the road and drove when the light turned green.

"I-it’s okay..." Winter murmured. But she knew it wasn’t. She placed her hand on her chest, trying to take a few deep breaths to calm her racing heartbeat. "I appreciate your effort to make

feel better, but I think it’s inappropriate for you to say this when you have soone you like."

"I don’t—" Arthur paused. He wanted to say he didn’t have soone he liked, but that would be a total lie, and he was unsure if he could make a convincing lie in front of his Madam.

He did love soone—a very beautiful woman he had been in love with for years. He just couldn’t say it out loud because she would fire him if he confessed.

"The woman I love will never accept , Madam," Arthur said wryly.

"Why not? Well, it’s fine if you don’t want to answer, but I’m curious since you are not bad-looking at all, Arthur," Winter assessed objectively. She had no feelings for Arthur, but as a woman, she admitted he was handso and muscular. "I’m sure many won want you."

"But she doesn’t want , Madam," Arthur murmured. He clenched the steering wheel, but his voice remained steady and calm. "I think it’s better this way. I don’t want her to hate ."

...

Winter fell silent after that.

She was curious but also scared of what would happen if she pursued this topic further.

She had a hunch that their relationship as friends and Madam-Bodyguard would crumble if she learned the truth.

Thus, Winter decided to keep her lips zipped, her ears tucked, and her eyes closed.

’Truly, ignorance is bliss...’ she thought while staring at Arthur’s back.

"Mom, I’m ho!" Cindy’s voice rang through the house as she removed her heels and entered the living room. She was in a great mood after being appointed Sebastian Saenz’s new secretary, albeit unofficially.

Gina was sitting on the sofa, absentmindedly watching a TV show, before she turned her head to look at her second daughter.

Smiling, she asked, "How was your ti in Winter’s office? Did you get the permit for an internship?"

"Yup! Oh, but I have even better news for you!" Cindy said, grabbing an orange juice from the fridge and sitting beside her mother on the sofa. Gina had never seen her daughter this happy before.

In Gina’s eyes, Cindy had always been calm, collected, understanding, and independent since she was young.

No matter how hard Gina tried to encourage her to act like a normal child, Cindy would still behave politely, having been through a few foster parents before staying with Gina must’ve forced her to mature earlier than children her age.

Thus, seeing this childlike innocence and glee in her deanor, Gina felt excited. "What is it? Did you et with a hot guy in the office?" she joked, trying to lighten the atmosphere.

To her surprise, Cindy’s cheeks reddened, and she nodded bashfully. "H-how can you be so spot on, Mom? But yes, I t a hot—HOT guy in the office. I almost couldn’t believe it when I saw him."

"Is he like Prince Charming?" Gina teased her second daughter, and Cindy nodded enthusiastically.

"Yes, it’s love at first sight. He’s my first love, Mom!" Cindy said, conveniently leaving out the identity of the man she had fallen for.

On the other hand, Gina was a little worried by how excited Cindy was. She usually didn’t act this way, but Gina assud it was because she had many good things happening today, from her first internship to eting the man of her dreams.

"Well, I get it. You’re very excited about this man. But don’t make trouble for your sister, alright?" Gina advised. "She’s kind enough to give you a spot as an intern in her company. You should be more sensible."

Usually, Cindy would obediently nod and say yes with whatever her mother said. She had long known that Gina was very biased toward her favorite daughter, Winter. Cindy also couldn’t bla her because Gina had raised Winter since she was a baby orphan, while Cindy was a foster kid.

She knew she wouldn’t receive the love that Winter had, but she felt upset this ti, especially after seeing the absolute hunk who had beco Winter’s second husband.

’It’s really unfair, isn’t it? Winter has everything, while I’d be stuck as a diocre woman for the rest of my life.’
