February 4th.
The New Year holidays were over. All the agencies were returning to their normal operations. And today, Li Chongming—who had already signed the divorce papers—was heading to the civil affairs bureau with Li Wanran to officially finalize their divorce.
He went alone.
Chu Fang was left at the temporary residence.
After gathering all the necessary docunts, Li Chongming drove to the civil affairs bureau.
As soon as he parked the car, he received a call from Li Wanran.
They t outside, exchanged no words, and simply went in.
The divorce process was familiar.
This was Li Chongming’s second divorce, so everything went smoothly. It didn’t take long to complete.
As they walked out of the civil affairs bureau and were about to part ways, Li Wanran suddenly called out from behind him.
“Li Chongming.”
His hand froze on the car door handle.
He turned back and looked at Li Wanran, who stood there with an expressionless face.
She seed to hesitate, like she had sothing to say. But after a long pause, she simply said,
“Never mind.”
With that, she turned and walked away—without even waiting for a response.
At this point, she didn’t want to stay another second longer.
Her strange behavior left Li Chongming confused. But he didn’t dwell on it.
Once Chu Fang’s visa was settled, they could head overseas together.
And then… there was the baby.
Ever since Chu Fang told him she was pregnant with his child, Li Chongming’s ntal state had been off.
Between the divorce and the property matters, he hadn’t had ti to take Chu Fang to the hospital for a checkup all week.
Now that everything was finally sorted, he planned to go ho, rest a bit, and then take her for a full exam.
With that in mind, he started the car and drove ho.
But when he opened the door, ready to share the good news—
He saw Chu Fang sitting on the couch, hair disheveled.
For a mont, Li Chongming stood frozen.
Snapping out of it, he rushed to her side.
Grabbing her shoulders, he looked into her dazed eyes and asked urgently,
“What happened? What’s going on? Did you hurt your stomach?”
He cared far more about the baby than Chu Fang herself.
Hearing his voice, Chu Fang looked at him with vacant eyes, simply staring in silence.
After a while, she opened her mouth and softly asked,
“What are you hiding from …?”
“What?”
Li Chongming was clearly confused.
Before he could react—
Chu Fang’s face twisted with rage as she suddenly shouted,
“Soone just called —told you’ve killed soone!!!”
Li Chongming’s eyes went wide.
He hadn’t expected this at all.
He slowly let go of her shoulders and took a step back.
“T-That’s nonsense! Who called you?!”
“I… I can’t believe this. I’m carrying your child. I’m carrying the child of a murderer…”
“I didn’t! Don’t listen to that crap!!”
Panic set in. His mind was racing. And almost instantly, one person ca to mind:
Li Wanran.
She called out to him earlier at the civil affairs bureau…
It was her.
It had to be her.
Chu Fang wiped her face, looking utterly hopeless.
She was clearly trying to keep it together—trying not to cry in front of him.
She stood up from the couch and brushed past him, heading for the door.
Realizing what she was doing, Li Chongming grabbed her arm.
But in the next second, Chu Fang began to struggle.
“Let go. I’m going to the hospital to get rid of this baby!”
Those words hit Li Chongming like a thunderclap.
He froze.
Then, as he snapped back to reality, his eyes reddened with emotion, and he tightened his grip on her arm.
“Was it Li Wanran?! Was it her who called you?! You have to believe , this is her way of getting revenge on ! She said she’d make pay—this is her revenge!”
“Li Chongming! Do you think I’m that gullible?!”
Chu Fang scread at him, slapping his hand repeatedly while shouting hysterically,
“You think I’m stupid?! That I’m easy to lie to?! You were terrified of Li Wanran. When she wanted a divorce—if I hadn’t said I was pregnant, you probably would’ve tried to kill too!!”
“I didn’t! Chu Fang… just listen to !”
“Listen to you lie?! You think I want to hear your lies?! You’re not afraid of her because of the money. You’re afraid because she’s holding sothing over you—and that sothing is you killed soone!”
“That’s not true!”
“Let go! Let go now! I’m going to the hospital—I don’t want to carry a murderer’s child!!”
That sentence—
Was the final straw that shattered Li Chongming’s ntal defense.
The secret he’d kept hidden for so long… had been unearthed.
His mind went blank.
In that mont, he frantically tried to explain.
“I didn’t kill anyone! What Li Wanran and her daughter know is that I once got into a car accident. After the accident, I ran. I got my driver to take the fall… But it’s over now! It’s all over! No one knows! Don’t believe them—I didn’t kill anyone!!”
“……”
Suddenly—
Chu Fang stopped struggling.
After hearing his confession, she fell completely still.
This sudden shift stunned Li Chongming, whose emotions were already spiraling.
He slowly let go of her.
He realized—
He had just confessed what should never have been said.
Looking into Chu Fang’s eyes, which now viewed him like a stranger, he subconsciously stepped back.
He already knew what was coming…
“You were lying to …”
“……”
Chu Fang silently pulled a voice recorder from her pocket.
She hit play.
The device began to replay everything Li Chongming had said since walking into the house—including his full confession.
Seeing the recorder in her hand, Li Chongming’s eyes widened to the extre.
His arms fell limp and started to tremble.
Chu Fang looked straight at him.
The madness from earlier was gone.
She had played her role all this ti, just to get this one piece of evidence from him.
“I’m the family of one of the victims from that crash.
Because you ran, my dad lost his chance at being saved.
My mom went insane.
My sister is paralyzed from the waist down.
She’ll never walk again.”
“……”
Li Chongming said nothing.
He stared at her, dumbstruck.
Even as his mind tried to deny it, a voice deep down was telling him… it was true.
His breathing grew heavier. There was a desperate note in his voice.
“Then… the baby… my child…”
“Child?”
Chu Fang lowered her head, touched her belly, then looked up again with a sneer.
“You think a worthless b*stard like you could have a kid?
You’re not even a real man…”
“!!!”
Li Chongming snapped.
The child had been his only obsession for years.
The one ray of hope he thought would redeem everything he’d lost—
and now, it was gone.
That overwhelming surge of hope and despair collided violently inside him.
He completely broke down.
All these years, he had done so much—so many plans, so much effort, just for a better life…
And when he lost everything, he thought at least he had this one child to hold on to.
But even that—was a lie.
His body began to tremble.
His face turned red with rage.
Anger boiled over.
He could no longer hold himself back.
He lunged forward, trying to grab the recorder from Chu Fang’s hand.
Seeing this, Chu Fang dodged to the side—
But that ant her path to the front door was now blocked by Li Chongming.
Her mind raced.
She suddenly turned and ran for the balcony, sliding the glass door open.
Grabbing the railing, she leaned over and scread with all her strength:
“HELP!! HE’S TRYING TO KILL !!!”
Li Chongming charged after her.
At that mont, his only thought was to destroy the recorder.
If he could just destroy that…
If he could just—
At the dinner table.
“I can’t finish…”
An Yuanyao pushed her half-full bowl toward Liu Changqing.
He paused mid-chew, glanced at his wife, then at her bowl.
He sighed.
“You’re not putting on any weight from pregnancy… but I am.”
Despite grumbling, he reached out and took her bowl, scooping her rice into his own.
“Have so chicken soup. It’s old hen—I bought it specially. Super nutritious.”
“Mmm, okay!”
Their casual chatter at the table was overheard by their son, Liu Zhiyue, sitting across from them.
The well-behaved boy had turned into a silent eating machine, saying nothing.
Liu Changqing looked down at his newly refilled bowl.
He felt a bit exhausted…
If only their daughter hadn’t gone to dance class, she could’ve helped finish the food…
Still, he couldn’t let it go to waste.
Determined to finish it, he raised his chopsticks—
But just then, his phone started vibrating in his pocket.
An Yuanyao, sipping soup, looked up.
“You eat, I’ll get the phone.”
Liu Changqing put down his chopsticks, smiled at his wife, and walked toward the balcony.
He pulled out his phone—it was a call from An Yancheng.
He answered.
“They’ve started arresting him already? That fast?”
[Li Chongming is dead.]
“……”
Liu Changqing stood there, staring out over the balcony.
His entire body froze.
