In the dining room, the servants had already set the dinner table. William Moore knew all the things she loved to eat, and he had even opened a bottle of red wine specially for her.

William adhered to the saying "do not speak when eating," but dining with him, Iris Harris felt quite at ease and did not experience the awkwardness that silence usually brings.

After dinner, Iris followed William to relax in the courtyard. The courtyard was full of bamboo; it was early sumr, and the sky was still slightly bright. A servant ca over and placed a jug of wine on the stone table. William poured a cup and handed it to her.

"This is osmanthus wine. Try it, it’s sweet."

He knew that Iris liked to drink these kinds of wines.

Iris took a sip, her eyes lit up slightly, and she smiled at William, saying, "Xavier, truly only you understand in this world."

Upon hearing this, William’s gaze deepened a little. He watched Iris as she picked up the jug and poured herself another cup of wine.

All he could do for her were just these little things.

He knew that Iris had been in a bad mood lately, so he had found the finest osmanthus brew and invited her out to drown her sorrows in wine.

He knew that being with him made her happy, yet that was all his role amounted to.

He ultimately wasn’t the one she held in her heart.

Iris, unable to hold her liquor well, had a few drinks and then leaned against William’s shoulder, gazing at the sky.

The sky had already darkened; the velvet-like night sky was adorned with countless stars.

Iris blinked and softly asked, "Xavier, am I not worthy of being loved?"

Hearing this, William turned his head to look at her.

Iris’s face was slightly flushed due to the alcohol, her eyes were fixed on the sky, making it impossible to discern the expression in her eyes.

Just in that mont, she looked incredibly sad.

William wanted so much to say, "You have , I love you."

But what use would that be? His love was not what she longed for.

Suddenly, his heart felt heavy. In matters of emotion, he was just an ordinary person.

He reached out and gently drew Iris’s fragile shoulders to let her lean into his embrace.

Tears seeped from Iris’s eyes, gradually soaking his chest, and he felt as if his own heart were becoming sodden, with an aching, sour pain.

If only she could love him, he vowed he would do everything possible to never make her cry in her lifeti.

But he had co too late.

He had not t her before she encountered Brandan Hyde.

If there were a next life, he would surely et her sooner, so he could protect her well...

He would never be like that other man, making her endure so much grievance.

The alcohol content of the osmanthus wine was not high. After lying down for a while, Iris sobered up.

She lifted her head from William’s embrace, smiling sowhat sheepishly, "I dirtied your clothes."

William looked into her moist eyes and sighed lightly, "Iris, if there’s anything troubling you, rember to tell ."

Iris heard this, and hesitated slightly. She thought of her illness, then thought, what would be the point of telling him? It would only add to his sorrow.

"Hmm." She nodded and stood up from the chair, "Xavier, I should be going back."

"Then let see you off."

Iris shook her head, "No need... if he sees..." She frowned slightly with so worry, then said with a bit of helplessness, "You know... that person seems to have a grudge against you."

William looked at her troubled expression and sighed lightly, "Alright. Then I’ll have the driver take you back."

After all, he couldn’t bear to make her feel uneasy.
