The older maid took a careful step forward, now lowering her tone. "Miss Yueyao. No one is going to hurt you again. Please, just one spoonful."
"No, I don’t!"
"My baby, where is my baby? He was so tiny, so lifeless!" She was hallucinating, and the pain of losing her unborn child was hitting her now at the lowest mont from all the nightmares that had been haunting her.
"Let call, Master Shen over...." The older maid walked over to the door and notified the guards at the door to notify Shen Xiao that Yueyao was awake and asking for her baby. He needed to co up as soon as possible.
"Madam, you need to eat sothing, Shen Xuan will co to visit you..." The maid was worried that the hatred between the mother and son was already at an irreconcilable state, and even if she was asking for him, her heart might not change.
"My baby... I need my little baby back!"
The sound of the tray being pushed gently aside was the only thing that grounded the room for a mont while she asked for her baby.
Yueyao’s breathing trembled as she leaned forward, hands clutching at her sleeves so tightly her knuckles went white.
Her eyes were distant, rimd in red, but brimming with a storm that couldn’t be voiced. Her voice had grown thin, more wind than sound. "I held her... I know I did... but then she vanished. They took her away from . They took my baby away..."
The younger maid opened her mouth, but no words ca. Her lips pressed into a pale line.
She had been trained for outbursts, for hysteria, for despair. But grief in its rawest form, this wasn’t in any manual. She couldn’t handle these emotions.
"My little baby! She was so beautiful! My little princess!"
"Where are you? Don’t bla , please. Where are you, my little princess?"
"Please co back ho... Please..."
"I could have protected you, but I didn’t! I really didn’t!"
"My little baby, so tiny...."
Shen Xiao who had been alerted by the guards that Yueyao was having an episode, hurried over to the room.
The door imdiately swung open.
Shen Xiao stepped in, breathing unevenly. The guards had alerted him, said Yueyao was awake, and said she was asking for her baby.
But nothing could have prepared him for this.
She was barely recognizable. Haunted. Unmoored.
His heart twisted painfully.
He walked quickly to her, then crouched in front of her, lowering himself to her eye level.
"Yueyao..." His voice was low and coaxing, like he was addressing a baby. "What’s the matter?"
Her head snapped up.
Her eyes locked on his face, fury igniting instantly.
"It’s all your fault!" she scread. "If it weren’t for those drugs... I wouldn’t have lost her! My little princess, she was so small, so fragile, you took her away from ! It’s you who stole her from !"
She slamd her fists weakly against his chest devastated. "Give her back! Give back my baby! Give her back to "
Whenever she saw him, the rage returned. It was bone-deep now. He had beco the embodint of everything she had lost.
Shen Xiao’s brows furrowed. He grabbed her wrists gently, trying to calm her. "Yueyao, you scared our son earlier today and I just sent him away. He’s just a child. That’s the only baby we have, Shen Xuan, it’s a boy, and not a girl. If you want, I can call him....."
"What son are you talking about?" she snapped, her eyes were wild and feral, ready to attack. "She was a girl, I saw it, she was a beautiful girl like my mother. My little princess. Why did this have to happen... why?!"
And then she broke down...
She sobbed as she curled tighter into herself, rocking slowly.
Shen Xiao stared at her, stunned, unable to speak because they had only one child, Shen Xuan, who was a boy and not a princess.
Sothing inside her had shattered. And no matter how tightly she clung to the pieces, they kept slipping through her fingers.
Seeing her like this devastated him, this wasn’t the outco he ever wished for. She shouldn’t have turned out like this, she was just following her mother’s footsteps all over.
"Yueyao...."
"Where’s my little princess? Why? Why? How could I have not protected her?"
Shen Xiao stared at her, stunned by the depth of her pain. She was trembling, curled in on herself like sothing cracked open, and her sobs tore through the sterile silence like jagged glass.
He reached out, but her body recoiled so violently that he froze mid-motion.
"Yueyao..." His voice softened, thick with guilt he couldn’t na. "You are scaring . What are you talking about? What princess?"
She shook her head rapidly, her fingers pressed over her ears as if trying to muffle his voice. "Stop it... just stop... I don’t want to hear you lie again! I don’t want to hear your voice, it makes sick!"
"I’m not lying. Yueyao, you didn’t have a daughter, but....."
"You don’t know anything!" she scread, the words exploding out of her as if they had been caged for way too long.
Her voice cracked halfway through, dissolving into sobs. "You weren’t there... You didn’t see anything... You don’t know anything, if only... If only.... If only the dead were brought back to life I would give her my life...."
"Yueyao, that can’t be happening! Your son is alive and okay." He was getting frustrated and confused even more. She didn’t need to sacrifice her life when he was alive.
"I saw blood.... Everywhere... Just blood everywhere.... It happened..,. Sothing happened!"
Shen Xiao’s brows furrowed, his heart racing as he crouched lower, hands spread in surrender. "Yueyao, I don’t understand. You are saying there was blood, that sothing happened, but what? Tell , and I will fix it. I will fix everything."
"You can’t fix this!" she cried....
