1148: Chapter 1148: North City Defense Army (Two updates for monthly passes) 1148: Chapter 1148: North City Defense Army (Two updates for monthly passes) Viko looked at these fully ard soldiers with so nervousness.
Just monts ago, these soldiers were obeying the officer’s commands, ready to riddle him with bullets at any ti.
And now, with just a few words, “Suote” made these soldiers imdiately lay down their weapons and surrender.
Wasn’t that a bit too “bold”?
As ti passed by, with He Ao’s final words falling, no one put down their firearms imdiately, but no one tried to advance forward either.
“Sir,”
a soldier among them spoke up, “we were just following orders.”
“I’ve said,”
He Ao swept a calm gaze across all the soldiers’ faces, putting away his card, “the Federal Bureau of Investigation will investigate this incident.
As of now, I am in charge of the Federation’s Federal Bureau of Investigation in Minte City.
If any of you still have objections, I can give you ti now to demonstrate.”
The entire plaza under the archway fell silent in an instant.
So soldiers raised their heads, glanced at the man bathed in blood, and then slowly lowered their heads again.
After a brief pause, a few soldiers in the front row slowly squatted down and placed their firearms on the ground.
Soon, more and more soldiers followed suit, squatting down to place their firearms on the ground.
In a matter of seconds, all the soldiers in the plaza had completed the action of laying down their weapons.
Viko watched all this with his eyes wide open and his mouth agape.
Just like that?
It was resolved?
He Ao didn’t seem surprised by these developnts; he withdrew his gaze, casually selected a soldier, and asked, “How do I get to the gate control hub?”
“It’s at the top floor of that elevator over there.”
The soldier carefully raised his head and pointed towards a channel nearby.
“Good.”
He Ao took a step forward and walked into the channel.
“This… this…”
Viko watched all this with his eyes wide open, stumbled as he hurried after He Ao’s steps, and suddenly ran into a motorcycle in front of him.
He looked down and realized to his shock that there was a corpse tied to the back of the motorcycle.
He had been too nervous on the way here to notice this ‘passenger’ riding with him.
But at this point, he had no ti to inquire about the identity of the corpse; he could only hurry after He Ao’s pace.
He looked at He Ao, and then at the channel ahead, stuttering, “Are we, just going up like this now?”
He turned to glance back at the soldiers who had put down their weapons, “What about them, just like this?”
After these soldiers laid down their weapons, He Ao seed to have completely relaxed, no longer attending to these soldiers, nor conducting any accountability or inquiry.
“What do you think their identity is?”
He Ao turned back to look at Viko and casually asked.
“Rebels?
Soldiers who’ve been bewitched?”
Viko, sowhat perplexed, followed He Ao into the translucent elevator at the end of the corridor, answering cautiously.
“No, they are all part of North City’s City Defense Army, and that of Minte City as well.”
He Ao turned around, his gaze piercing through the semi-transparent elevator, looking outside.
Standing inside this elevator offered a view of the interior side of the high wall.
He reached out to activate the elevator.
As it quickly ascended, layers of walls glowing with light flashed by outside the elevator.
Doubles of eyes seed to shimr out of the light on those floors, gazing at the ascending elevator.
They were soldiers stationed at different areas of the high wall.
They had not participated in this incident, but they had been ‘watching’ all along.
They were also subordinates of the North City Commander who had planned the opening of the gates.
In that instant, Viko suddenly grasped the aning behind He Ao’s words.
The attitude He Ao had shown towards those ‘prisoners of war’ below also reflected his attitude towards the City Defense Army still stationed at key posts in North City.
Indeed, it was also a display of attitude towards the City Defense Army stationed in other areas of Minte City.
Viko started to carefully reflect on what ‘Suote’ had just said, mulling over the recently concluded ‘surrender talks’.
These soldiers surrendered,
one possible reason is that Suote had just displayed a terrifying power beyond their comprehension, provoking fear and awe in them, making them feel undefeatable,
another is that as soon as Suote made his appearance, he decisively killed the North City Commander and all his followers, completely eliminating any possibility for the rebels to regroup and secure a command core.
But during the first ‘call to surrender’, these soldiers did not surrender; instead, soone said, ‘we are just following orders’.
Was that actually these soldiers ‘negotiating’?
Were they trying to get a promise of ‘exemption from punishnt’ from ‘Suote’?
But ‘Suote’ did not promise them ‘exemption from punishnt’.
Viko carefully recalled those words.
The undertone of ‘Suote’s’ last sentence was, in essence, ‘either accept the investigation and trust that I will be fair to you, or continue to fight ’.
Finally, the soldiers accepted his terms.
Viko subconsciously looked up at the figure beside him.
He suddenly realized that the recent ‘call to surrender’ wasn’t as ‘peaceful’ as it might have appeared.
The man in front had almost completely subdued those ‘rebels’ with sheer ‘dignity’ and ‘dominance’.
Moreover, it seed to have established ‘authority’ among the rebels as well.
Ding—
The sound of the elevator opening shattered Viko’s reverie.
The thick scent of fresh blood and the sporadic gunfire almost simultaneously burst through the elevator doors.
“Is there still fighting here?”
Viko raised his head and spoke subconsciously.
However, he did not wait for an answer; the figure beside him had already disappeared the mont the elevator doors opened, appearing at the end of the hallway, following the bloodstains on the ground to the entrance of the control center.
The soldiers originally stationed at the control center turned their heads upon hearing the noise behind them, looking toward the door.
“Who are you?”
The voice belonged to a blood-stained man, who seed to realize sothing upon seeing He Ao.
Then without hesitation, he shouted, “Change the attack direction, enemy attack from the rear!”
Hasty gunfire rang out in the dim space.
A blood-red brilliance flew out of its sheath.
The next second, blood splatter stained the ceiling crimson.
The head of the blood-stained man flew under the lights and crashed into the blood-soaked ground.
One after another, corpses fell like dominoes.
In a very short period of ti, the entire control center quieted down, with only sporadic gunfire still sounding from a channel in the corner.
It was as if soone was incessantly shooting from within that channel.
The corpse closest to the channel had already reached the entrance of the channel.
He Ao stepped over the corpse, braving the gunfire, and walked into the channel.
This narrow passage was littered with sandbags stained red with blood, and bodies piled into barricades blocked the entrance to the passage.
Behind these corpses and just two or three ters into the passage, a sowhat slight figure was crouching among several bodies.
Blood had sared over his eyes, his body curled up behind half a sandbag, gripping a rifle, continuously pulling the trigger.
He seed to have lost his sensing of the outside world, firing blindly.
He Ao stepped forward, walking towards him step by step.
Just as he was about to reach the slim figure, that figure suddenly bounced up, attempting to pull the pin of the grenade that had been hidden in his hand.
Bang—
A broad palm gripped the grenade in his hand.
A calm and gentle voice sounded in his ear, “The fight is over, we’ve won.”
The slight figure looked up in bewildernt, his blood-stained gaze facing forward.
A face also stained with blood appeared in his blurred field of view, and he asked dully,
“We won?
The reinforcents have arrived?”
“The reinforcents have arrived.”
The figure calmly replied, then slowly released his grip on the other’s hand.
“The reinforcents have arrived?
You’re not lying to ?”
The slight figure glanced at the grenade in his hand, realizing that the person before him had no reason to lie, then he lowered his head, looking at the body half covering him, and suddenly shook violently,
“Captain, the reinforcents have arrived!
The reinforcents have co!
You said we would have reinforcents!
They’re here!”
He Ao calmly watched this scene, stood up, and moved back to the mouth of the channel.
At this ti, Viko also crossed over the blood and corpses on the ground, arriving behind He Ao, staring blankly at the scene.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say sothing, but no sound ca out.
He Ao turned around, passing by his side.
As their figures crossed each other, He Ao lowered his head and whispered just loud enough for himself to hear, “Who are these?”
“North City City Defense Army.”
The figure walked towards the control center, the calm voice echoing in his ear.
He paused for a mont, his gaze fixed on the slim figure amidst the blood.
This one night, he had experienced, learned, and seen things that seed to surpass decades of his life.
He slowly turned around, looking at the figure behind him.
The lean but upright figure still stood tall, as if all he had been through that night was but a long drop rging into the ocean.
He watched that figure insert the Mayor’s Authority Card, close the city gate bolt, then connect to the entire City Defense Army communication system,
“I am Suote, deputy chief of staff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
This is the control center of the North City gates.
The attempted rebellion by the North City Commander has been thwarted, and he has been duly executed.
Now, by the Mayor’s authorization, I am temporarily taking over the entire North City defense system.
“From now on, all gates of North City are closed, no one is permitted to pass, and the defense system is entering a state of readiness.
All on-duty soldiers are to return to their posts imdiately.
“For any missing positions, the City Defense Army Command Center will dispatch personnel to replace them, everything else continues as normal.”
As his words concluded, He Ao cut off the broadcast.
Before Viko could ask ‘when did we communicate with the City Defense Army Command Center’, He Ao pressed a button, accessing a special communication system of the South City City Defense Army.
So dense gunfire was faintly audible from the other side, and after a brief pause, a voice tinged with doubt and hesitation sounded through the comm system, “This is Owai.”
“Suote,”
He Ao replied calmly, “North City has been secured.”
The other side of the communication system fell silent for a mont, then hoarsely said, “Give Fifteen Minutes.”
In the distance, the gunfire on that end beca more intense.
