Liora used the most basic sacred restraint she could to tie up the five operatives. A trade caravan ca down the road thirty minutes later.

Zephyra wrote a sealed ssage for the regional garrison in fifteen minutes while Rick put the prisoners in the caravan’s spare wagon. The seal was Grand Sorceress, Mage Council.

The courier read it and then moved quickly, like people do when they know how important a seal is without being told.

Heinz told Rick, "She wrote that without stopping, and she didn’t read it again."

"Well, yeah... She doesn’t have to read it again."

"I know." He said it in the sa open, direct way he said everything else, without any performance.

"I just think that’s amazing." He ant it completely, and the fact that he ant it completely was one of the things that made Heinz hard to understand.

Rick rode with that for a while.

On the third afternoon, Valdris ca into view. From the high point of the road, they could see the city’s skyline before the road went down.

Rick reached through the bond to Carmilla while the city was still on the horizon. Her emotional signature ca back calm and alert, with the heavy weight of soone who has been dealing with a difficult situation and is ready to pass it on correctly.

He listened while she talked.

Fredrich’s revelation had split the Mage Council into three groups that were acting like separate factions in all but na. Six mbers under senior Councillor Veth had decided that the disclosure was honest and that Fredrich’s cooperation was still useful.

This is the kind of decision that people who have been in institutional politics long enough to tell the difference between soone who betrayed the institution for personal gain and soone who betrayed it because they thought it would serve a larger purpose would make.

Four mbers wanted the person to be fired, investigated, and punished formally. So of them had voted for the original motions and were now angry that they had been used as tools.

Carmilla said this was understandable but likely to cause problems. The other three were still unsure and were reading the implentation records.

One of them had been nad by Fredrich as the person who made the first motions.

The most important part ca at the end. The records of the implentation were still going.

Fredrich had made his disclosure about the confession itself and had not issued a suspension order. The records had been running for four days since the session.

Natasha had been keeping an eye on the output pattern and wanted to show Rick in person. She had said that it needed to be seen in context, and to do that, you had to be in the room.

Rick asked, "Why not through the bond?"

Carmilla said that Natasha’s exact words were, "Context requires being in the room. " Carmilla also didn’t add her own thoughts to what other people said.

Rick put it in the file, and then thought. ’Another weird kind of thing...’

’Every second... every minute... and every hours felt so long, and I don’t know why that I feel like I’m stuck in this place.’

Zara’s ssage, read by Carmilla in the voice of soone who wasn’t there, said that the demon troops were fine, she had been waiting three days, and if Rick didn’t co back soon, she was going to redecorate the mansion, and he should know ahead of ti that she was going to make choices he wouldn’t like.

Sylvia’s update, next to Zara’s: the Northern Peaks were stable, and Sylvia had told Zara not to redecorate. This made Zara start redecorating right away, and Sylvia was having a week.

Rick told Carmilla to tell them he was almost there. She said she already had, and that Sylvia was happy and that Zara had stopped redecorating when she heard the news.

Rick wanted to know how far along the redecorating was. Carmilla stopped for a short ti, but it was long enough to give information.

She said that the east sitting room had a new look and that she wanted it to go back to how it was before. However, she thought the result was professionally impressive in a scary way.

When they got to the mansion, Carmilla was at the gate. She looked at Rick for a second with the look of soone who has been worried about sothing and just found out that it was taken care of.

She didn’t think much of it.

"Welco back," she said. "Council wants to et this afternoon."

"Natasha’s report is ready, and Zara has redecorated."

Rick said, "I know."

He stared at her. "Thanks for the week."

She kept the look for a while. "You’re welco," she added. "For the week."

The east sitting room had really changed. Zara had changed the soft furnishings to make the room both a tactical operations space and a comfortable room, which shouldn’t have worked but did.

On the central table was a detailed map with current notes on it. The cushions were also very nice.

"I kept the good cushions," Zara said, standing in the doorway with the look of soone who had made choices and wasn’t sorry for them. "They were the right cushions for the space."

Sylvia said, from the chair she had clearly claid in opposition to the redecorated furniture, "She wouldn’t let change anything back, and I tried it three tis."

"The third ti, she sat on the piece in question until I agreed that it was now her furniture."

"This chair is better." Zara said, "The sizes are right for the room."

Natasha handed Rick a piece of paper and said, "Read section three first," before he had even fully entered the room.

Rick had learned that this was Natasha’s way of saying "welco," since her main emotional language was sharing important information with people she trusted to use it correctly.

He read the third part.

He raised his head. "How long has this been going on?"

"Four days have passed since Fredrich’s revelation," Natasha said. "Maybe longer if the conditions for activation were t before the session."

"Soone could have read the pattern earlier if they knew what to look for."

"Did anyone know what to look for?"

"No... Not until I did."

There were four people in the room where the analysis took place, and the atmosphere was so quiet that everyone understood the significance of what they were examining.

Natasha, Zephyra, Carmilla, and Rick.

anwhile, Liora was in the east wing with Heinz and Sophia, who were still recovering from Absolute Stillness. She needed to conserve her divine reserves instead of engaging with Council politics, as doing so would distract her from her primary goal of supporting her allies in their recovery from Absolute Stillness.

Natasha’s discovery was remarkably precise, which made it particularly unsettling. Fredrich’s implentation records, given to Rick during his ocean mission, were not rely procedural motions for governance.

Hidden in those records was a hidden set of rules that controlled how to oversee civilian magical networks. Thirteen Council mbers reviewed these records in standard administrative language without raising any concerns.

Despite its appearance, the backup plan was far from standard.

The chanism activated automatically when the primary authorization holder was no longer in charge, regardless of intent. It transferred access to a specific group of Mage Council archives to a secondary authorization frawork that was distributed across seven administrative positions.

Not seven individuals, but seven administrative positions.

These infrastructure maintenance roles were designed to be low-profile yet still had access to all aspects of the Council network as part of their job descriptions. By the ti Fredrich completed his oath-bond and made his disclosure, the chanism had already been operational for four days.

"None of them flagged it," Natasha remarked. "It seems like a routine administrative update from a standing oversight motion."

"The authorization transfer is functionally invisible unless you know what to look for..."

"I searched for it because the implentation records employed a notation system I hadn’t encountered before."
