Chapter 256: I am your king
Lauren stared at Alec’s hand for seconds.
Her heart was pounding hard in her chest, and she wished he wouldn’t hear it. She wished to run and escape, but a part of her was telling her that she shouldn’t. She couldn’t.
"Scared of , Miss Davis?"
"Your Majesty, I-"
Before she could finish, the king had reached out for her hand, and she gasped in surprise. She hadn’t taken his hand, so he reached for her hand himself, and everyone saw it!
"Only a foolish man would dare refuse a king, Miss Davis. Are you a fool?" he asked softly in her ear as his other hand reached for her waist, gliding softly until it reached her back.
Shivers ran through her spine.
"My apologies, Your Majesty. I wasn’t planning to refuse."
Lauren felt the warmth of his palm on hers and his other hand at the small of her back, yet sothing felt cold about all of it. She was nervous.
"Mm." He peered down at her, his gray eyes piercing and dark, their faces so close to each other. "But you thought of it, didn’t you?"
She didn’t know what to say because it was true. But did she even have a choice? She wouldn’t dare do that. Especially not in front of so many people.
"I just think that it is inappropriate for a maid to dance with her king."
His lips twitched so slightly.
"Yes, I am your king."
It sounded a little mischievous in Lauren’s ears. She looked into Alec’s eyes and saw sothing else in them. They were shining. She couldn’t read what he was thinking, but she knew there was more to it than ets the eye.
"And I would decide if sothing is inappropriate or not. After all, I am the ruler of this land," he added with full authority in his voice, and then he spun her around and pulled her closer, eye to eye. "How could sothing so beautiful be inappropriate?"
Lauren’s breath was caught in her throat.
She stared into his eyes and got lost in them. She forgot about the dance or the crowd. She was just there, dancing with him. And she knew it was sothing dangerous.
"Don’t worry, most people here don’t know you’re a maid in the castle. You shouldn’t think too much. Besides, I am happy."
"Happy about what, Your Majesty?" she blurted out, thinking too late.
Before she could apologize for boldly asking the king, Alec replied.
"Because Bodeville’s royal family offered their eldest daughter’s hand in marriage, and I have decided to marry her."
Lauren was taken aback.
"You..." Her voice faded, and Alec was looking at her intently. Seriously. "You are marrying again?"
Alec stiffened for a mont.
It was because after what he said, Lauren’s eyes flickered to sapphire blue, just like the real color of her eyes.
Alec whispered after a few seconds of deafening silence between them.
"Does it bother you?"
Lauren held her breath. She couldn’t understand what she was feeling. It was like there was sudden rage and sadness in her chest, and she didn’t understand why she was suddenly having inner turmoil just because the king said he was marrying the Bodeville princess. Did she care?
"Your Majesty, I-I think I hurt my foot. I better stop dancing and-"
She tried to pull away, but Alec only pulled her closer. His grip on her hand tightened, but it wasn’t too firm to hurt her, and his hand on her back snaked around her waist to keep her from moving away.
"We must finish the dance, Miss Davis. It would be a sha if everyone saw that a lady such as yourself left her king in the middle of a dance."
He stared at her darkly, and she felt suffocated.
"Why do you seem agitated? Did I do or say sothing that made you upset?"
"No, Your Majesty." And yet she was breathing hard, her eyes couldn’t help but glare at the man in front of her. She couldn’t understand why she was acting like this!
"Oh really?"
His lips twitched, his eyes held a soft look yet with a hint of mischief.
"Did I make you upset when I said that I am marrying Princess Seraphine?"
Lauren’s eyes widened at Alec’s assumption.
But she was more shocked to find herself at a loss for words. It was as if she was proving him right!
"Why would I be?" She almost choked. She was having a hard ti saying the words right, but she continued in a hard tone. "I am the King’s subject, therefore, I am happy that Your Majesty is getting married. Congratulations."
Even with what Lauren said, Alec could see sothing else in her eyes, and he knew he wasn’t backing down. He knew that even without her mories, her heart still felt for him, andnow that he got a reaction from her, this might be a way to make her rember without triggering the seal of her soul.
"Why can I see anger in your eyes, though?" Alec pushed, holding Lauren close.
"It’s because..." Lauren sucked in her breath. "I am not fond of dancing, Your Majesty. I didn’t wish to dance, but I couldn’t refuse Lord Vincent-"
"And you dare leave
on the dance floor?" His eyes narrowed at her as if sothing was so wrong about it. "You accepted his invitation and were willing to dance with him, but you can’t do it with ?"
"That’s not the point," Lauren stopped and took a mont to calm herself when she realized she raised her voice. But she couldn’t keep her composure for so reason. She was shaken by sothing, and she didn’t know why she should be!
"Why do you even want to dance?" Lauren could no longer recognize the firmness and power in her own voice. "Why don’t you just dance with your wife-to-be and leave
alone?"
Lauren couldn’t explain it, but thinking about Alec marrying Princess Seraphine brought her pain deep down her chest, and she couldn’t help her feelings. She didn’t have ti to analyze or care about her actions, but she was too confused with her emotions.
"I am leaving, Your Majesty."
She grabbed her hand from his grip and turned away, but just when she thought he was letting her go, he pulled her back with his hand on her waist, and before she knew it...
She found his lips on hers.
