Chapter 236: A Dead Woman’s Face
Luke found this particular maid sowhat familiar. He couldn’t recall the incident of eting her, but her face...the shape, the auburn hair, the sharp facial features, he didn’t know why he felt like he had t her before.
Luke found this odd. It was only his second ti coming to Evardin, and the first ti was many years ago. He was around sixteen years old, he guessed, when he accompanied his father to a royal banquet here.
"I don’t think that is possible, Your Highness," Noelle replied after a mont of pondering what to say.
It couldn’t be possible. Before Annie, her older sister, died a year ago, she told Noelle that they had only lived in Aviore since they were born. She was a re commoner, so how could she et a royal, especially from a faraway land?
"You must have mistaken
for soone else," Noelle added.
’But she looks really familiar. I don’t know why. I guess she resembles soone I’ve t before.’
Although puzzled, Luke just decided to let go of the topic. As the crown prince of his kingdom, he was forced to socialize with many people, so he sotis got confused about who was who.
"Do you want to have your breakfast here, Your Highness?" asked Kathy.
It was only then that Noelle noticed a pair of round brown eyes staring at her curiously.
It was the little girl standing beside Prince Luke.
The curiosity behind her brown orbs made Noelle curious. She had received so many weird stares since she arrived in the palace, but this little girl, the way she stared at her, it was like the girl was certain she had seen Noelle before.
"Don’t mind. I will have it at the dining table with my family and King Alec," ca Luke’s answer to Kathy’s question.
Noelle was so tempted to ask the little girl what was wrong but she dared not speak a word in front of the prince.
The young girl wore a pretty decent dress which ant she wasn’t just anyone. Besides, the palace didn’t take children as servants.
"I’ll go now, Prince Luke. My mama will reprimand
if she finds out I went too far again," said the little girl. Before running away, she glanced at Noelle one last ti, wonder was evident in her expression.
"Isn’t she the head maid’s daughter?" Kathy whispered, talking about the young girl who just left. Without orders from Luke, the three maids stood a ter away from his back to give him private space.
"You an Miss Isobel’s daughter?" Noelle was intrigued. Isobel looked at her with shock and disbelief the other day, and now her daughter?
How strange.
"Yes. I saw her yesterday. If I heard it right, I think her na is Lily," said Marie.
Lily.
A pretty na for a pretty girl.
Noelle had never t soone with the sa na before but oddly, it sounded familiar to her.
While waiting for any command from the prince, Noelle looked nowhere and let her mind wander.
Her elder sister, Annie, told her that she got into an accident which caused her loss of mory. They had been to the best healer mage in their village but it didn’t help. They were told her mories might co back one day, no one knew, or they might never return.
As they couldn’t afford to go pay healers in the town, Noelle didn’t bug her sister about it. They were only living off as servants, so she thought there was no ti to waste over lost mories. They needed money to live and so they were required to work.
Almost an hour had passed when a maid from the kitchen inford Prince Luke that the breakfast had been served.
Breakfast in Evardin’s palace was usually served by seven, but in the past years, the king rarely sat at the dining table. He usually had his als sent to his office because he was always working. This beca a concern to the court ministers because they felt like Alec had beco addicted to work, even doing jobs that the ministers should do.
Noelle followed the prince to the dining table along with Kathy and Marie.
When they arrived at the dining hall, on the long dining table filled with a feast of food sat the king and queen of Bodeville, the two princesses and the other prince. Luke took the seat next to his younger brother, Dominic.
Staying behind Luke five feet away, Nolle darted her gaze to the seat at the head of the table. It was empty.
Is the king not joining the breakfast?
While she pondered, she noticed the younger prince’s bulging eyes staring at her with a twisted neck.
The other personal servants of the guests were there too, which included Noelle’s friends, Jenny and Isabel. Jenny stood behind Princess Seraphine across the table, while Isabel stood behind Dominic on the sa side as Noelle.
’No way!’ scread Dominic in his mind.
This face...this is Lauren! But how could this be? She died five years ago!
Dominic was engaged to one of Lauren’s sisters back then. He stayed at the palace for days, talked to Lauren, and was sure his eyes were not tricking him.
"What’s wrong with you, Dom?" Luke asked when he noticed how his brother kept his neck twisted just to stare at Noelle behind them.
"Lauren..." Dominic mumbled as if he were seeing a dead rise before his eyes.
But then, Dominic noticed sothing.
Her eyes. They are pitch-black, not blue.
"Do you know the maid, Dom?" Bodeville’s second princess, Iris, asked in an annoyed tone. "Or perhaps she resembles one of the girls you have fucked-"
"Iris," King Andrius’ voice ca out as a warning. "Watch your words, young lady, unless you want your tongue ripped out when we get ho."
The young princess who was only a lady of age eighteen rolled her eyes but kept her mouth shut.
The older princess, Seraphine, who appeared more prim and calr, stared at Noelle, wondering what got Dominic perplexed.
Then suddenly, her eyes widened and she almost dropped the glass of water she was holding.
"She looks like...Lauren!"
