Chapter 145: Accusation against the Queen

"Maybe they know," Alec suggested. Lauren ca to his office to tell him what happened to Jennifer, which he already knew. "Whoever is behind the rebels, if it is that mystery woman, she must be under the assumption that you are the one who wants Jennifer Haystone in the castle."

"So she had her killed?" Lauren hissed. If that was true, how could soone easily kill her underlings? She looked at Alec, her knuckles turning white around her clenched fists. "If she doesn’t hesitate to kill the people working with her, then that ans she has a lot of pawns to use."

While the two of them continued to talk, Matthias opened the door. He forgot to knock as he was in a hurry. He had a critical look on his face as if a war broke out.

"Minister Haystone is in the main hall with her family guards. He seems to be not in the right state for a talk so I told him to leave and co back once he has cald, but the minister refused. He threatened to fight the royal guards if the Queen will not face him."

"He demands the Queen’s presence in her own ho? What a polite visitor we have here," Alec raised a brow and her eyes darted to Lauren who seed to know what Minister Haystone ca for. He also had an idea what the reason was, and he wasn’t liking how the capricious minister insisted to et Lauren. One can never demand the queen’s presence like that. Only the king.

In the main hall, Minister Haystone was surrounded by his family guards who were in a defensive stance, ready to wield violence against the royal guards around whose eyeing them sharply. Minister Haystone was a smart man who rarely act on impulse, but today when he saw the remains of his daughter, he completely forgot reason and was driven by his anger.

Last night when Jennifer told him the news of the King’s invitation, he saw how Jennifer was so happy and eager to live in the castle. As a loving father who wanted the best for his child, Minister Haystone was glad that his daughter got what she wanted. But the news of her death was too much for him to take. How could it be a coincidence? Jennifer was on her way to the castle when she was suddenly ambushed by an unknown assailant and was murdered brutally. Who else would be disappointed if the King takes another woman in the castle? He believed the Queen must be the one behind it.

The servants in the main hall bowed their heads as soon as they spotted Alec and Lauren descending the stairs.

"Should I behead him right here?" Alec whispered to Lauren. The ghost of an eerie smile on his lips suggested that he would not hesitate to do so if Lauren would demand the minister’s death. Minister Haystone might be a useful subject of the court but his life did not matter to Alec.

"The poor man just lost his daughter. He only hopes to be enlightened. That is way too cruel," Lauren mused. She looked at Minister Haystone who seed to be murdering her in his mind. She could foresee a great drama ahead.

"Do you want to have breakfast first? It is past eight. You should eat first," Alec said thoughtfully, which made Lauren want to laugh. The anger on Minister Haystone’s face was saying that he was here for war, yet Alec was more concerned with her going past her breakfast ti.

"Why don’t we talk with the minister first. He appears very eager to speak with ," Lauren’s tone was laced with disdain as they stopped two ters from where Minister Haystone stood. With the tension in the air, the royal guards surrounded them like how the Haystone’s guards surrounded the minister.

"What matter is there to be discussed between us for you to pay

a visit this early, Minister Haystone?" Lauren spoke, her voice diplomatic.

From what she heard, Jennifer had a good relationship with her father. It ant Minister Haystone was not feigning the grief and anger she could see in his eyes. The rough lines in his face were more emphasized as he continued to frown and the lining of his irises had turned dark red.

As if the king wasn’t eyeing him darkly, Minister Haystone replied with his face showing all his prejudices against Lauren, "I ca in concern to my daughter’s death, Queen Lauren. She received an invitation from the King yesterday saying that she was invited to live in the castle to be His Majesty’s concubine. She left our ho with a smile and yet..." His jaw clenched. "I suddenly received the news that she was killed on her way to the castle."

"That is also what I heard," Lauren remained calm, oblivious to the dark thoughts of Alec who stood by her side. As Alec watched how Minister Haystone kept on glaring at Lauren, he felt the urge to plunge his two fingers into the man’s eyes and pull his eyeballs.

"I offer you my most sincere condolences, Minister Haystone. Lady Jennifer’s death surprised . I believe we had developed so sort of friendship and it saddens

to think I can no longer see her. Should you need any assistance regarding the investigation, you may tell us."

Hearing all the kind words Lauren was spurting and believing that it should be her who had her daughter killed, the anger Minister Haystone was holding back with his last thread of patience burst out in treacherous flas.

"Stop the act! It must be you who had her killed!" Minister Haystone completely forgot where he was and who he was talking to. He was mad beyond reason, and all he could think of was the sight of his daughter’s bloody body, the deep cuts on her skin, her broken skull and her face that was barely recognizable due to the damage the murderer had done to her.

"Are you accusing your queen?" Alec asked quietly, calmly, it was like a whisper. But how his words were laced with deadly silence made it carry a greater weight than Minister Haystone’s loud voice.
