Chapter 124: A Dark Knight
When the door clicked open, the piece of paper in Lauren’s hand turned into dust carried by the wind out of the window.
She then turned to Alec.
"You’re done with the court eting?" She asked and looked into the books she was checking earlier.
Alec went to his desk. She glanced at him when he took his seat and wondered if he had cald down after their little argunt.
"I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t done," he answered bleakly and she figured out his mood was still sour.
"I ca to ask if there is any news from Dr. Bentley."
"He is still running so tests. He is a skilled doctor but he doesn’t know everything. If the mastermind of the rebels left such a valuable trace, it ans she is confident of their creation and thinks that we can do nothing to reverse the effect of the poison," he said without glancing at her. His eyes remained on the papers on his desk.
"I forgot to tell you. I didn’t kill Sean Devitt. I figured out he could be of help since he is from a bloodline of skilled healer mages. He is now an apprentice of Dr. Bentley."
Oh right. Sean Devitt... she completely forgot about that man. She had been dealing with a lot of things since Eloise’s death so she had not decided what to do with him.
"That’s alright. I also thought he could be of so use so I spared him. But are you sure he wouldn’t bring us trouble?"
"He wouldn’t dare," Alec replied and Lauren wondered what he did to Sean Devitt to make him abide by his bidding. Perhaps he offered him a new life? Protection?
"Since there is no news from Dr. Bentley, I shall go ahead then," she said and turned to the door. She was about to take a step when she heard a loud thud from Alec’s desk.
"Are you not giving
any explanation?"
She looked at him. He was now leaning on his chair with his one hand on the desk and his dark eyes staring at her.
"Explanation for what?" Lauren was confused. For their argunt earlier? But she didn’t think she needed to explain anything. "If this is about yesterday, I believe I have explained my side enough. As the King’s wife, it was reckless of
to get drunk at an unmarried man’s place, I admit that. But I didn’t give you any serious problem so I won’t apologize for having fun with my friends."
"That is not what I want to hear."
She frowned. "Then what?"
"Co here."
She stopped beside his desk. "Now, tell ."
He arched his brow as though he was annoyed.
"What? Is this not close enough for you? Would you rather have
on your lap?"
His eyes darkened at her words.
"Sit on my lap, then."
His tone held not the slightest humor.
She scoffed. "Don’t you have things to do? I suggest you stop fooling around and tell
what your concern is."
"Why? Do you have an appointnt after this? Perhaps you’d go et Mr. Sullivan again..." He didn’t even bother hiding the annoyance in his tone.
"Ethan is just my friend, Alec. You make it sound so malicious. You shouldn’t drag him to this." She felt the urge to roll her eyes but she kept a straight face, trying to keep her cool. "Now, tell
what explanation I owe to you because I don’t know what it is for."
Lauren suddenly felt the need to step back when he stood and occupied the narrow space between them. He towered over her and she felt small like she always did every ti they were standing this close to each other.
But like a lamb pretending to be a tigress, she offered him feigned grit and t his brooding gaze.
"You don’t rember anything last night?"
Wait. Had she done sothing silly? But the last thing she rembered she was drinking in Sullivan’s establishnt.
"What... did I do?" She asked, a little nervousness peeking in her tone.
His eyes narrowed at her which made her gulp.
"Stop looking at
like that. Why don’t you just tell
directly?" She paused to think if a breakable thing was missing in their room when she woke up earlier this morning. "Did I break things?"
But why would he demand an explanation from her for breaking things? That didn’t sound right.
Or... perhaps did he know about the missive she got from the hawk? But she made sure the piece of paper completely dissipated into dust.
But then this man wasn’t an ordinary person but a vampire mage. Who knew if he could see beyond a normal eye.
The task she gave Darius was sothing very personal, a secret that even her friends or Julian didn’t know... and the thought of Alec learning about it made her feel a hollow in her stomach.
"You gave your dear friend, Mr. Sullivan, a ring?"
How did he know about that?
"What for?" He probed.
"Did I tell you that?" She didn’t rember her talking to him last night but if it was what he was asking an explanation for, then it was a relief. She thought he knew about the missive.
"You were calling
Ethan last night. You kept on asking if I found the ring you gave," he said in a controlled tone. Like he was pissed but was still trying to hold onto his priced patience.
"So... tell . What is the ring for? You don’t give rings to your friends, Lauren."
Of course she knew that. In society’s eyes, giving a ring to a person only ant one thing: you shared romantic feelings and you wanted him or her to be your partner in life. But her case with Ethan was a whole different thing.
"You misunderstood it. It’s nothing like you think." She snickered because she knew what he was thinking and she found it ridiculous.
"Really?" He sounded suspicious.
Should she tell him that Ethan was planning to propose to Vivian? But it was supposed to be a secret.
"Ethan asked
a favor. He wants to propose marriage to soone so he asked
if I could choose the ring since I have a good taste in jewelry. That’s why I gave him a ring, but he lost it. I bought it at a high price so I was a little upset."
He remained scowling at her which got her annoyed.
"You don’t believe it?" She shook her head and was about to walk away but he held her elbow. "What? Are you going to insist that I am lying?"
He stared at her for a few monts as if he was in the middle of contemplating what he should say.
Couldn’t stand his dark stare, she was on the verge of escaping his grip when he suddenly lifted her to the table, knocking the piled books behind her.
"What are you-"
"Since you made
so annoyed, you need to pay for it, dear wife," he whispered before discarding the papers on his table with one wipe of his viny hand.
Her fast heartbeat rang in her ears.
"Are you going to drink from ?"
His eyes dropped to her half-opened lips like he didn’t hear what she said.
When he lifted his gaze to et hers, his sullen orbs were filled with mischief as if he was about to break so rules.
"Yes, and I want to do more."
Her eyes widened a bit. More?
"Does that an you are going to take
here? But this is the King’s office, it isn’t allowed-"
"I break rules most of the ti, darling. I saved you from your worthless family but I am no prince. I’m not a righteous hero. I’m a dark knight with ulterior motives..." He crouched and laid his hand flat on the table on her either side as he watched her with their faces an inch apart. "And my ulterior motives include devouring you, Your Majesty."
His dark bedroom voice made her stomach twist. She was a woman who just explored the world of carnal desires and she was a hypocrite if she would say she didn’t want to do it again with him.
"This isn’t the right place, Alec. What if servants will co, your subordinates..."
He glanced at the door and she heard it click, indicating that it was locked.
"Servants don’t enter any of the royal’s chambers without getting permission."
"But we are on your desk. We might ruin things," she glanced at the papers and other files beside her.
"Then I suggest you don’t move too much," he whispered in her ear and heat rose to her cheeks when she rembered how she couldn’t stop herself from writhing under him when they did it in bed.
Before she could say more, he kissed her on the lips hungrily and all she could do was to cling to his shoulders as if her life depended on it.
