291: Chapter 291: The Alien Group in the Fog

The Special Defense Departnt did a fine job, there weren’t any additional ssages on the forum; however, quite a number of people were paying attention to the sudden foggy weather, with most advising not to wander off carelessly to avoid being caught in so strange copy.

“I’m ready,” said Yan Jiayu as she ca out, asking him, “Are you going back to Ting City after we eat?”

Xu Huo had already sent a ssage to the Girl in the Painting, telling her he would return in a couple of days.

“I don’t plan on going back either, but I’m heading to the orphanage later, might as well go together,” Yan Jiayu said.

“I saw so children from the orphanage begging for food a few days ago; they’re probably unattended due to the recent chaos.

It’s so pitiful when little kids have nothing to eat.”

Xu Huo had no objection; after having breakfast, the two purchased so food and clothes and brought them to the orphanage.

However, they were stopped outside when they went to knock on the door by a middle-aged man dressed as a security guard, who cautiously held an electric baton, “Move along, move along, the orphanage isn’t accepting visitors lately!”

“We aren’t bad people; we’ve brought things for the kids,” said Yan Jiayu, holding up the bag in her hand.

“So of your kids have seen

in the park.

If you don’t believe , call them out, the older ones, around teenaged.”

The security guard was half in doubt, his suspicious gaze particularly on Xu Huo.

Xu Huo glanced at him, “I’m just a runner.”

“Wait here,” the security guard said as he picked up the phone.

Soon a teenager ca out from the small building inside and recognized Yan Jiayu at a glance.

Yan Jiayu placed the things at the door and took out so neatly wrapped money, saying with a smile, “I intended to give this to you when you ca to the park again, but since you didn’t show up, I had to co here.”

The boy didn’t reach for the money, but rather said with a shafaced expression, “The little brother and sister didn’t understand and even threw mud at you.

I’m sorry!”

“It’s okay for kids to be a bit naughty,” Yan Jiayu said nonchalantly, waving her hand and stuffing the money into his hand.

“I don’t want the money,” the boy said defiantly, clenching his fists.

“Our ‘mother’ the director has gone missing, and there are ghosts in the orphanage; the money and food just disappear mysteriously.

We just need so clothes and a little bit of food.”

“Nonsense about ghosts!

Stop speaking rubbish!” the security guard scolded.

“It’s all you half-grown boys, not clean-handed, stealing money and then not admitting it!”

“We didn’t!” Two more older kids ran out, followed by a trail of younger ones, grabbing the bags as if competing, not even letting the security guard touch them.

Facing the questioning looks from Xu Huo and the other, the security guard hurriedly said, “I didn’t take their stuff; as you know, it’s unsafe everywhere nowadays.

Since the director went missing and the staff stopped working, I’m staying here out of concern for them.

I can’t just wander off; I only took a share of their food…”

The security guard didn’t appear to be lying; he just seed cowardly.

“There have been plenty of rumors about ghosts in Hua City,” noted Xu Huo.

“The locations are quite scattered.”

The so-called ‘haunting’ by the park could be due to a copy entrance, but such a vast range is rather odd.

“No ghost would steal money and food,” declared Yan Jiayu, rolling up her sleeves.

“I’m going to catch the ghost.”

With that, she grabbed onto the gate with one hand and nimbly jumped inside, patting the heads of a few bigger kids, “Leave it to !”

She then entered the security guard’s room, hit the button to open the front gate, and gestured for Xu Huo to co in.

The security guard, taken aback by her actions, said nothing but glared at the group of children and closed the door of the security room.

Yan Jiayu quickly got along with the children and learned the full story.

The director had disappeared half a month ago, the police had investigated but found nothing and left the matter unresolved.

Before leaving, they did help reach out to others to care for the orphanage, but not even the staff here wanted to stay, let alone outsiders.

Xu Huo checked inside the welfare institution and looked at the local news, “Ghosts are impossible; it’s probably so kind of animal.”

“There are so bite marks on the cabinet, could it be a stray cat?” Yan Jiayu thought for a mont and said, “But it doesn’t seem like there are cats or dogs around here.”

“I’ll go check the nearby sewer pipes.” She said and imdiately ran out.

Xu Huo didn’t follow her, but instead called the children of the welfare institution over to inquire about so details.

In fact, before the director went missing, the welfare institution had already been losing money and food.

The losses consisted of small change used for daily expenses and food that was gone without a trace, locking it up was useless, and later the director began keeping the items in her room, but then she disappeared with them.

The likelihood of human involvent was very small, but after human evolution, it couldn’t be ruled out that animals had also mutated, just that everyone’s attention hadn’t been on this amidst the previous turmoil.

“Uncle, sister is calling you.” A child ran over and said.

Xu Huo went out the back door of the welfare institution, crossed the street, and went to the opposite side.

Yan Jiayu stuck her head out of the sewer pipe, “There are a lot of mangled cat corpses down here, and a human body too, the face is unrecognizable, but there’s a welfare institution logo on the clothing of the corpse, it might be the missing director.”

“Did you find anything else?” Xu Huo bent over to pull her up.

“Also, there is a lot of rat droppings, but much larger than any I’ve previously seen.

The sewer network is extensive, who knows where the rat nests are.

Should we call the police…” Yan Jiayu said, getting up with his help, she only felt that sothing was off when her feet hit the ground.

Xu Huo also noticed, as he was pulling her up, the fog suddenly thickened, and their visibility subtly changed, with the ground and the streets on both sides appearing to have a double image.

“We haven’t entered a copy, have we?” Yan Jiayu turned her back to him to guard the other side, “To use the sewer as an entrance, this copy is too shabby!”

Xu Huo was about to speak when suddenly, rapid and intense footsteps echoed through the fog, and as he looked up, a dark figure leapt out, snarling and biting towards him!

Then ca the second, the third, the fourth…

An uncountable number of people surrounded them, covered with bite marks, their bodies turning green and black, emitting a strong foul sll.

If it weren’t for the faint heartbeat, they would look no different from dead bodies!

“It’s an alien species!” Xu Huo swung his sword, clearing the wave in front of him, then pressed his back against Yan Jiayu’s, “Hold on to , we’ll move above ground!”

Yan Jiayu collected five heads with a pair of scissors and before she could reach out her hand, large groups of people jumped down from the buildings on both sides of the road.

Although these people looked numb, their movents were extrely fierce.

As their numbers increased, the two of them started to struggle to fend them off.

After a few minutes of fighting, Yan Jiayu couldn’t help but ask, “Have we really entered a copy?

Why haven’t we received a ga prompt by now?”

Xu Huo’s gaze hardened, and he imdiately pulled out the Fifty-Fifty Open Air Window System, but the prop didn’t react.

The Fifty-Fifty Open Air Window System could open once in any space outside of a copy.

If they hadn’t entered a copy, could it an that they were still in Zone 014?

“Let’s check the other side first.” he said.

They fought their way across the street, but the welfare institution that was originally there had vanished, replaced by a broken periter wall, and the mont they crossed the wall, a shockwave swept out from the depths of the thick fog!
