Sea Voyage 3

Fifth day on the sea.

"”Oniichan, can we jump in?"”

"Where!? Into the sea? The sea!? No, that's not okay!"

"Fish."

"We’ll catch so."

"Mhm, that's a good idea."

"What!?"

Out of the blue, the kids asked for permission to jump into the sea they were peeking at from the railing. Should I be glad they didn't jump without asking first?

"If you want fish, we have plenty! If there's sothing specific you want to eat, I can make it!"

"That's not it~"

"We want to catch them."

"I’d love to eat the fish you cook, Takumi!"

… Fish dishes wouldn’t distract them. Well, Kaiser might be easier to sway.

"Uh… I’ve got it! Fishing! Could we try fishing?"

"”Fishing?"”

"Yeah, fishing for fish. Hopefully, the ship has so fishing rods. Let’s ask, shall we?"

"”Let’s ask~”"

So, through Patrick-san, I asked the staff about fishing rods and was allowed to borrow so, as they were always on board.

"They probably keep them for when supplies spoil or run low, so they can catch fish to supplent."

"Ah, I see. You can’t source food elsewhere on the ocean."

"Or maybe it’s for passengers like us who might request it."

Whether it’s because we’re valued guests or they usually prepare for passengers, I don’t know, but we borrowed enough rods for everyone. Surprisingly, they were quality rods with reels. I hadn’t expected them to be this nice, but I’m glad we could borrow them. ŕἁNΟᛒÊŜ

"”Yay~ fishing ti~"”

"This is my first ti fishing as well."

We made our way to a spot—whether designated for fishing or just convenient, I’m not sure—and began preparations. The bait was small shrimp, also sold from the ship’s supplies.

”"Is this good?"”

"Yep, perfect. Throw it into the sea. Oh, hold on to the rod tightly and don’t let go."

”"Okay~!"”

Cautioning them not to accidentally throw the rod itself, we started fishing.

"Patrick-san, you seem quite skilled."

"I grew up by the sea, after all. But Matthew, weren’t you born inland?"

"Yes, including this trip, I’ve only been to the sea a handful of tis. This is my first ti fishing."

Patrick-san and Matthew-san joined us for fishing, while Lancer-san and Eugene, occupied with their guard duties, refrained and just observed.

"”It’s tugging!"”

"Eh, already!?"

Not long after casting their baited hooks, both Allen and Elena got bites.

"They really seem to have caught sothing. Allen, Elena, slowly reel it in."

"”This one?"”

"That’s right. Turn it slowly to wind the line."

"”Round and round~♪ Round and round~♪"”

Though I’m not particularly knowledgeable about fishing… well, as long as they’re having fun, it’s fine.

"”Mumumu?””

"It seems like a good catch~"

With strong tugs coming from the other end, they seed to have reeled in sothing decent.

"”Mumu…Pull~—got it~”"

"That would be caught it, right?"

”"Caught it~!"”

With a final big tug, the kids reeled in a rather large fish.

"Is this… a sea bream?"

They really caught a sea bream with shrimp bait.

"”Got one!”"

Excitedly, they attached more shrimp bait and cast again, quickly pulling up more fish.

"”Got another one!"”

"Isn’t that too fast?"

"”Fishing is so fun!"”

The kids kept reeling in fish one after another, including sea bream, bonito, flounder, and even so vibrant, mysterious fish. I was so busy handling the caught fish—dispatching them and storing them in my Infinite Storage—that I had no ti to fish myself.

"I caught one, too!"

"A snake!?"

"Mhm, it’s not a fish, but I caught it!"

Kaiser reeled in sothing resembling a sea snake.

"I doubt it’s edible?”

"That’s unfortunate. But surely, it’ll be useful for sothing!"

I felt like we should return it to the sea, but Kaiser was reluctant to release the catch he had caught with so much effort.

"... Well, it's okay. It looks like it's poisonous, so maybe we can make use of it."

So, I killed it and stored it in the Infinite Storage.

“”Mumu?””

“What’s wrong, Allen, Elena?”

“”So strong~””

Allen and Elena struggled with their lines, which were being forcefully pulled.

"Takumi, are their lines tangled?"

"Ah, it looks like they are."

Patrick-san pointed it out, and upon closer inspection, their lines seed to be connected, but their rods were still being pulled.

"Kaiser, hand your rod to Eugene and help Allen."

Kaiser assisted Allen while I supported Elena. As soon as we secured them, their bodies lifted off the deck.

"”Whoa!”"

"”Careful!”"

We barely managed to hold onto the rods in ti.

“”Startled~””

“That was a close call.”

"Truly. But it seems sothing’s caught on both lines."

It appeared a single fish had bitten onto both baits.

"This must be a huge one."

The fish was so heavy and lively that the reel barely moved.

"Kaiser, keep going!"

"Oniichan, you too!"

Allen and Elena cheered us on without leaving our arms.

"Won’t the line snap?"

"”No way!?”

"The rods we borrowed are of excellent quality, so the lines should hold."

The ship had top-grade rods, and we’d been given the best ones as first-class passengers. The lines breaking wasn’t a concern.

"Takumi, it’s almost there."

"It’s getting close… Ah, I see it now."

"”Lem see~””

"… Is that a sea serpent!?"

What we caught wasn’t a fish but a monster.

"Won’t it be a problem if we bring it aboard?"

“”Waterball!””

"Huh!?"

"”Killed it!””

As I hesitated, the kids cast waterballs, skillfully killing the sea serpent without cutting the lines.

"... They’ve gotten so good at hitting moving targets…"

Initially, they struggled with accuracy, but now they hit effortlessly. They’ve really grown.

"Well done, little ones. Now we can reel it in easily."

"”Yay~”"

"Takumi, even fishing turns into sothing extraordinary with you guys, huh?"

The defeated sea serpent was easily reeled in. Patrick-san and the others, who watched the whole ordeal, were stunned, but I decided to pretend I didn’t notice.

"That was fun! Oniichan, buy us fishing rods~"

"Ah~ Sure, let’s look for so in Bailey.”

"”Let’s do that~””

After the sea serpent, we enjoyed fishing for hours without catching any more monsters.

The kids loved it so much that we decided to buy fishing rods for future adventures.
