Helena woke up disoriented and with a sweet ache between her legs.

It reminded her so much of the night she first slept with Roo, he was insatiable just like last night.

She let out a sigh right before prying Roo’s arms off of her and swinging her legs over the side of the bed.

"Don’t go," Roo grumbled as he felt her move to leave.

She yelped as she was yanked back down into bed, and Roo wrapped his strong arms around her waist.

"I have to go, we have that brunch to host before the Rite," Helena said as she felt Roo’s lips pressed against her shoulder as he peppered kisses all over her.

She was tempted to stay.

Last night, despite all of her fears, was one of the best nights she could rember.

Falling asleep in Roo’s arms and waking to his scent felt like a dream co true to her.

"It’s my Alpha Rite," Roo groaned.

"And I’m your Luna— I an your acting Luna," Helena said, quickly correcting herself. She didn’t want Roo to carry the false hope that he could keep her.

"That’s right, you’re my Luna," he moaned as he pulled her face to his and kissed her passionately.

Helena rolled her eyes but let Roo hold her for a little longer.

Eventually, she knew she had to leave. It was going to be a long day for both of them, and then she had to slip away after.

Helena knew that if she waited for the Blood Moon, she’d either be stuck in Blackmoon or be heartbroken. Either way, it wasn’t going to end well for her.

When Helena finally made it down, Roo was quick to move to her side, wrapping an arm around her and pulling her possessively to him.

"I missed you," he whispered in her ear.

Helena sighed and shook her head, "I slept in your room. I only left to get dressed."

"It was too long," Roo groaned. "You should have just taken a bath in my room."

"We wouldn’t have left if I did," she teased as she elbowed his side.

Roo brushed his nose against the crook of Helena’s neck before kissing where he would mark her if they were mates.

"That doesn’t sound like a bad idea," he said before kissing the spot again.

It took all of Helena’s control not to moan in response. It seed that the closer the Blood Moon got, the more sensitive she beca.

Helena found herself constantly craving Roo’s touch.

"I need to make the rounds," Helena told Roo as she pushed him away.

Roo frowned but there was nothing he could do as Helena joined a group of Alphas and their Lunas.

"Alpha Helena," one of the Alphas she’d t in the past greeted. "It seems Alpha Roo is quite smitten with you."

Helena couldn’t help but blush at their observation.

"You fight, don’t you, Helena?" one of the Lunas asked.

"When needed," Helena responded with a nod.

"Right, we heard about the attack during the ceremony for the forr Red River Pack mbers," the Alpha said. "Were you badly injured?"

Helena nodded.

She knew there was no point in lying to their allies.

"I was unconscious for two days," Helena confessed. "The blade they used was dipped in wolfsbane."

The others gasped, shocked that she’d survived a wolfsbane attack.

"No wonder the Alpha was inconsolable," one of the won in their group said, shaking her head. "My mate already worries enough about , and I don’t even join in the fighting."

"I can only imagine how distracted Alpha Roo must be," one of the Alphas said with a sigh.

"Excuse , but what?" Helena questioned as she glared at the Alpha.

The alpha seed to want to retract his statent, but he’d already made it, and there was no going back from what he’d said.

"I didn’t an to offend you, Alpha Helena. It’s just that when my mate is in danger, my whole attention is on her," the Alpha explained, sothing Helena understood.

"As do I about my mate," another Alpha added.

"It’s just that it must be difficult for Alpha Roo to focus on a fight when you’re at risk right next to him," the first Alpha said.

Helena knew that he didn’t an anything malicious by it, but he wasn’t wrong.

She knew that her fighting would always make Roo worry, it was in their nature.

"And if you were hurt or about to be hurt, if that were my mate, I’d abandon whatever fight I was in to save my mate," the other Alpha said.

"Roo trusts that I can handle myself," Helena answered confidently. "I can fight as well as any Alpha out there."

"We know, Alpha Helena," one of the n said as they scrambled to salvage the conversation. "It still won’t stop your mate from worrying."

"It gets even worse after you’re marked," one of the Lunas sighed as her Alpha pulled her close. "The bond makes everything stronger."

Helena nodded. She knew that, she just didn’t factor in how much she affected Roo without being bonded.

He hadn’t even marked her yet, and he was already rendered incapable by her injuries.

He left his work to sit by her side.

"I’m sure you and Alpha Roo can work sothing out," the other Luna said as she placed her hand on Helena’s.

Helena nodded before excusing herself to entertain another group of guests.

While she made her rounds, making sure she at least said hello to everyone, she couldn’t help but worry about the impact of their bond on her.

Would this an that to protect their people and for the benefit of their pack, she’d have to stand back?

But she was one of the Blackmoon pack’s strongest warriors, she was an asset, not a liability. But if she was with Roo, that’s exactly what she would be.

He’d be too distracted by her safety to put the pack first, and was that really what she wanted? For Roo to put her before the pack?
