The elevator was silent as Roo processed what his sister just told him.
He was a father.
His mate had left their pack, pregnant, and had to go through the difficulty of bearing his child alone.
"What kind of mate and father am I?" Roo said, his voice shaking.
"Oh, Roo," Rae said as she hugged her brother. "It isn’t your fault. Helena kept it a secret from you. She knew before the Alpha Rite, she’d planned to stay before she found out that the attackers were after her."
"I should have been there for them, Rae," Roo said as he leaned against the wall of the elevator.
"What’s important is you’re here now," Rae said as she finally let go.
"Was it hard for her?" Roo asked. "What was it like?"
"It was honestly a mostly easy pregnancy," Rae explained. "It only beca complicated when she gave birth. He’s a strong boy."
"A boy," Roo said as he processed everything Rae would give him. "What did she na him?"
Rae gave him a smile, making Roo raise an eyebrow.
"Ronan," Rae told him.
"Ronan, my son," Roo whispered. "After Grandpa."
"Yes, after Grandpa," Rae confird as she gave his hand a squeeze.
When the elevator doors opened, Roo took a deep breath and stepped out.
There were four guards standing outside the door, two of whom were warriors he’d sent with his mother and sister.
He smiled, glad that Helena had taken the safety of their son so seriously as to put the guards outside her door.
He’d never been here but the place already felt like ho. Sothing felt oddly familiar about the door that waited for him.
"Now I have to warn you," Daniel said. "It might be quite a shock when you get in Helena’s apartnt."
"Why?" Roo asked his Beta.
"Just trust us on this one," Rae said, giving his shoulder a squeeze before walking past him and nodding at the guards.
"You guys know who he is, right?" Victor asked the guards.
"Yes, Alpha," the guards all answered in unison.
"Good, he’s allowed in," Victor clarified as Rae held the knob and several locks clicked free.
Roo made a ntal note to put so sort of locking system on the Alpha level of the Packhouse back in Blackmoon. While most wolves respect the personal space of the Alpha and his family, there were those who still wished them ill.
His family would always be his first priority, his mate, and now his son too.
Roo gasped as he stepped into the space, he couldn’t quite believe his eyes as he scanned every inch of what was visible from the doorway.
"Right?" Rae asked with a grin on her lips. "Helena said she missed ho so much that she made her place here look just like the packhouse."
Roo nodded silently as he took everything in.
As they walked deeper into Helena’s ho, Roo stopped in his tracks and stared at his stepmother who was waiting for him with a little bundle in her arms.
"Is that..." Roo couldn’t even finish his statent as he started at the little bundle in his mother’s arms.
"Roo, I’d like you to et your son, Ronan," Alyssa said as she held up the little boy and for the first ti Roo laid eyes on his son.
"Can I— Can I hold him?" Roo asked as he stepped closer, unsure of what to do.
"Of course, silly," Rebecca said from beside her mother. "He’s your son."
Roo smiled at his little sister and gave her a nod.
"Here," Alyssa said as she handed Ronan over to him. "I’m sure you haven’t forgotten how to carry a baby."
Roo smiled as he took his son into his arms and held him close.
Looking down at the little boy, Roo couldn’t believe that the little bundle in his arms was his. He could see how Ronan resembled him, they had the sa hair, the sa nose, his skin tone was the sa as Roo’s, and even at that age they had the sa jaw.
"Hello little boy," Roo said as he planted a kiss on the top of his head. "I’m sorry your mommy isn’t with us, but I promise I’ll get her back, I’ll save her."
As if Ronan understood what he was saying, the little boy opened his eyes and it looked like Roo was staring into an old photo of himself.
He felt his heart skip a beat as he fell even deeper in love with his son, and then it happened. There was a small spark in the boy’s eyes, making Roo hold him tighter.
"He manifested again?" Alyssa asked, shocked but at the sa ti she didn’t sound too surprised.
"Manifested?" Roo asked as he looked from his son to his mother.
"Signs of magic, just like his mom," Alyssa explained.
"I guess he did, it was amazing," Roo said as he returned his attention to the little boy.
Roo watched Ronan as he slowly fell back asleep already at ho in his father’s arms. Roo swayed gently as he used to do with Rebecca when she was a baby, till Ronan was fast asleep.
"You’ll watch over him, while we look for Helena?" Roo asked as he looked up at his mother.
"I’ll protect him with my life," Alyssa swore.
"I’ll send for more guards, and Dad is already on his way," Roo promised.
Alyssa reached over and held his arm tight. She looked into his eyes and Roo swore she could see the fear and worry that now consud him.
"The Sunfire Alphas have provided us with more than enough security and not just anyone can get into this apartnt," Alyssa told him. "We will be safe here."
"Norris will stay at your side," Roo told his mother as he looked at the old Gamma.
"It would be my honor," Norris said.
"I’ll stay with them too," Jonathan, the young Alpha was quick to announce.
Roo gave his sister a questioning look, but Rae simply sighed and shook her head.
"We’ll make this place the center of our operations, Roo," Victor promised. "So we can find Helena and you can be with your son."
"Thank you, all of you," Roo said.
"For Helena," Victor answered, making Roo smile.
