Just as the lightning lit up the plateau, she twisted her body with impossible grace, leaping into the air. The laser missed her by re centiters, the heat close enough to scorch the edges of her armor.

And then she started her counterattack.

While still mid-air, Cleo's six short swords, hovering behind her like loyal wolves, launched forward at high speed. They spun and twisted as they closed the distance, aid straight for the old governor like bolts of light.

But the old warrior was no amateur. With a growl and a slam of his boots into the ground, he activated his secondary defense. A wide, pulsing energy barrier ford around him, catching all six blades in mid-flight. Sparks flew as tal clashed against energy.

For a brief mont, the world held its breath.

Then both of them returned to their starting positions. The governor stood tall and solid, shield at the ready. Cleo landed in a low stance, her swords circling behind her once again like orbiting moons.

All of this happened in the blink of an eye.... then the sky opened up.

Rain poured down like a broken dam, each drop heavy, loud, and relentless. It soaked everything in seconds. The plateau turned slick and gleaming under the downpour. Thunder roared again, louder now, closer.

The storm had beco part of the battlefield with its howling winds, pounding rain, and flashes of lightning. Nature itself seed to roar with the fury of gods, matching the tension between these two warriors.

"Hohoho, just as I expected from soone who ca to conquer a world through blood and fire," the old governor said with a chuckle while raising his sword toward Cleo with unwavering resolve.

His voice echoed with age and defiance, the kind of tone only soone who had lived through countless battles could have.

"Through war?" Cleo replied coolly, her voice calm but sharp. Her eyes, glowing with that golden light, never left him.

"I seem to rember that you were offered the chance to surrender before a single shot was fired. It was your pride, not our weapons, that wasted all those lives and resources."

The old governor let out a short, bitter laugh as the storm raged around them. "In all my years, I've never t anyone who gives rcy as if it were free bread!" he shouted, the humor in his tone now replaced with fury.

Then, like a cannonball, he charged once again at full power.

The ground trembled under the weight of his powered armor, its blue energy circuits lighting up with every step. The engines roared at full output as he lowered his shield once more, then he fired another blinding laser beam at Cleo.

But Cleo had already moved.

To soone like her, soone that was a hyper-intelligent AI core and was equipped with predictive scanners, the attack was old news before it even started. Her advanced senses picked up the hum of energy build-up inside the governor's shield before the beam even ford.

Without hesitation, she flicked her wrist, and one of her floating swords shot out behind him like a flash of silver lightning.

The governor's instincts, honed by decades of warfare, flared to life. He knew the risk. His personal energy shield was his last line of defense, ant only for sneak attacks, and once spent, it couldn't be used again during the duel.

He had no choice.

He spun on his heel, just in ti to block the flying blade with his shield, the force of the impact sending sparks into the rain. That split-second decision ant he had to defend with both arms,... shield in one hand, sword in the other as Cleo pressed in.

She now wielded two swords, moving like the storm itself. Her body twisted and spun with impossible grace. Every strike she made looked like part of a deadly dance, her steps tid with the rhythm of the thunder and rain.

The governor, in contrast, stood like an ancient roble tree... tall, sturdy, and unbending. He took every blow with skill and strength, deflecting, parrying, and retaliating with calculated precision.

Though his movents were less graceful, they were just as effective. He was a living fortress, one who had spent a lifeti surviving battles far worse than this.

Steel clashed against steel again and again, their swords ringing out through the heavy rain as lightning flashed above them. It was not just a battle... it was a duel between two master swordsn. A display of willpower, endurance, and technique.

Minutes passed, but neither slowed. The storm did not let up. Neither did they.

And then the unimaginable happened.

Sothing changed in the governor's movents. It was subtle at first... a slight hesitation in his footwork, a minor delay in raising his shield. But Cleo noticed it instantly.

Her eyes narrowed.

His speed dropped. His power armor, overloaded from the earlier energy discharge, was finally starting to falter. His movents grew sluggish, and his defense beca flawed.

Cleo seized the mont.

With flawless timing, she sent one of her flying swords circling low, its blade cutting silently through the rain. The governor couldn't react fast enough....

The blade pierced through the side of his leg, embedding itself deep. The old governor let out a grunt... not of pain, but of frustration as his knee buckled slightly under him.

The duel was far from over, but now, for the first ti, the outco had clearly shifted.

Cleo stood tall, swords at the ready, rain dripping from her armor. Her golden eyes locked on her opponent

The old governor, wounded but still upright, raised his shield once more. Even now, he refused to kneel.

Cleo leapt backward, her movents light and fluid as she made several graceful backflips, creating distance between her and the old governor. She landed softly on the wet stone, her boots splashing into a shallow puddle of rainwater.

"I can't find the logic behind your actions," she said calmly, her voice carrying clearly through the downpour despite the thunder rumbling above them.

As she spoke, her helt began to fold away with a soft hiss of steam and shifting tal. Her long black hair spilled out, cascading down her back like silk. Her golden eyes, bright like twin suns in the storm, glowed softly under the falling rain.

She looked at him with a mix of confusion and curiosity. "Why are you doing sothing so pointless… even when your body is already in that condition?"

The old governor smiled, blood trickling from the corners of his mouth. He reached up and deactivated his helt as well, letting it split apart and fold into the back of his armor with a clank.

His white hair was soaked and clung to his weathered face. His eyes, bloodshot but burning with will, stared back at her.

"Hohoho... It is precisely because my body is falling apart that I must do this," he said with a proud grin. "If these old bones, this last bit of blood I have, can be of use one final ti... for my people and for my beautiful Xylos...then I will give everything I have left."

As he spoke, the drones circling above zood in, broadcasting his tired, pained expression to every screen across the planet. People watching saw a man far past his pri but still standing tall in the rain.

Blood ran from his mouth and eyes, and every breath he took seed to shake his body. To the average viewer, it might have looked like these wounds were from the duel itself.

But those present on the plateau knew better.

Both sides, the Allied and the Xylosi, were equipped with all sorts of dical scanners and sensory tech. They could see what the caras didn't show... what Cleo had already confird with a single glance.

When her golden eyes had scanned his body earlier, she discovered the truth: it wasn't just age or battle fatigue.

His body was suffering from cyber poison, a slow, cruel death caused by poor-quality cybernetic implants combined with cheap stimulant injections over years of service. His organs were failing, his blood was polluted, and his neural network was breaking down.

The fact that he was still standing, much less fighting, was nothing short of a miracle.

"A pointless act," Cleo said flatly; her tone was cold and unreadable. "There's no logic in this. You could have chosen to surrender peacefully and spared yourself this."

The old governor gave a wheezing laugh while wiping the blood from his lips with the back of his hand.

"Hohoh… That's what you think. But I'm sure… you already know the truth. You've seen my condition. And yet... you still go along with this old fool's final wish, don't you?" he said with a sad, knowing smile. "That alone proves it's not so pointless, does it?"

Cleo was silent....

He took a deep breath, his chest rising shakily as he turned his face toward the dark skies above. "Now then… let's give it everything we've got in one final clash. Let this old man die with honor."

Suddenly, his power armor hissed loudly, and warning lights flared across his chestplate. A fresh injection of powerful stimulants was administered directly into his body.

The effect was imdiate as his stance straightened, his eyes regained sharpness, and his muscles surged with renewed strength.

Cleo remained still for a second, then whispered sothing almost too quiet to hear.

"Activating Overdrive."

As soon as she said the words, her body lit up with pure white energy. From her back, elegant white wings burst forth like rays of light, glowing despite the storm around her. Her Kaelzar overdrive had been activated, her full combat mode, capable of leveling armies.

But she didn't take to the sky.

Even though she could fly... soar above the battlefield and end it from above, she chose not to. She remained on the ground, standing at eye level with the dying warrior before her.

She didn't know why she did it. Everything about her Kaelzar nature, everything logical and tactical, scread that she should use every advantage.

But so part of her… so small, strange part… wanted to do this...
