"Matriarch protects us!" Barbara exclaid as she prayed and bemoaned. "Sothing happened to Nethe!"

She had just jumped from level 11 to level 24 with a prompt for a branching Path. That doesn't happen without a good reason. Since she did nothing to award FOUR million Exp, the only answer was that Nethe did sothing huge. The book mimic did say they would go hunt monsters in the lake. She racked her brain as she tried to rember the current Exp tables. Then she rembered she could check them in her interface.

Four million Exp was in the ballpark of an award of a level seventy-sothing. But Nethe was a baby mimic, level zero. Even if she accounted for the Exp multiplier for defeating sothing above one's own rank, it would still be a creature above level fifty. How the tiny book managed to kill such a dangerous creature was beyond her understanding. Rather, what was a creature this powerful doing in the city lake? She shuddered. Children went swimming in that lake all the ti. It was considered safe but if monsters level fifty were popping up like that, the city would need… But then how would she explain how she knew? And what creature was it?

"Barbara, what's wrong?" Jerrick held her shoulders, their face too close. "Who's Nethe?"

Befuddled, she blinked and stared at the taller boy, barely breathing as she worried. Her mind ran millions of possibilities until she rembered she could communicate telepathically with her familiar.

Silence. She trembled, thinking her familiar was lost.

"Barbara, talk to ," a desperate Jerrick begged.

"Barbara?"

Her shoulders slumped and she t the young man's eyes with an apology on her lips, "Sorry, Jerrick. I have to go back to the dorm."

"But we've just arrived! We haven't tried the gas, the kebab cart, shopped for matching souvenirs," the boy clamored as his well-planned date schedule was unraveled by Fate.

"Sorry, we'll co back next month. I know this is important to you, Jerrick, and you put a lot of effort into planning this outing, not to ntion getting us the passes. But I have to go back to Nethe."

Now that she seed to have her wits about her, Jerrick realized how close they were and how the people were looking at the student couple with knowing smirks. Self-conscious, he let go of her shoulders.

"Who's Nethe?" He asked, trying not to sound hurt but failing miserably.

"My familiar," Barbara said in a whisper. "Only Miss Dorlaminn knows about it so far."

Jerrick's lips cracked slightly upward as he noticed the trust she placed in him. His pubescent imagination ran wild and he daydread of what could happen should he cultivate this trust. Like the fool most young n his age beco when infatuated, he beca extrely agreeable.

"Next month then. Let's go back."

Feeling so guilt, Barbara compromised, "I swear I'll make it up to you."

Jerrick misheard what she ant and walked on clouds all the way back to the Academy.

I slipped inside mom's gift… rather, the gift the who rembered everything left for . The woven silk cover was marvelous and very comfortable. It had tiny silver corners with gem slivers that held my cover like an embrace. It also had a long padded strap so Barbara could wear over her shoulder. Steel cable woven with living silk ran inside the strap so it wouldn't be easy to cut. I felt as safe as a book could be inside this cover. Warm by the silk sleeve, I fell asleep.

Sothing shook awake. I cracked an eye open in the red faux-silk ribbon poking out between my pages and saw Babara staring at . She seed both worried and angry.

"Wake up, Nethe!" She clamored as she picked up and shook .

"What happened?" Barbara demanded. "What monster did you fight?"

I deadpanned.

She smiled at . "Then let's go to class."

"But that's expensive! A training room costs seventy-five silver a day!" She protested. Students usually ford groups of twenty-five to rent one. It still ca out as expensive since one could live for a week in a good inn for three silver.

They left the room and went downstairs so Barbara could have breakfast. With the Perks I unlocked, I rarely needed nourishnt anymore.

With a mix of surprise, sha, and outrage, she opened her mouth but no sound escaped it. As she shut it and clattered her teeth, Barbara protested, "Nethe! That's rude!"

After I visited the vault and erased any trace of the intruders who took the book out of it, I went to visit so fairy friends of mine and crafted a few teaching aids for Barbara. Unlock [Leadership] and help her. Rember, she's very important to us.

The last part went without saying, but it was good to know my full self agreed with .

She missed her breathing rhythm and did the love child of a sob, a hiccup, and a sigh, "Nethe!"

She looked at the red crystal engraved with a small spell circle. Then picked up from where I was hanging and stared at the tiny eye on the inside of my spine, just above my pages' binding. "Nethe, who is your mother?"
