The Eternal City rose to greet them not as a destination, but as a return to gravity.

Its white stone walls glead beneath the sun, banners snapping crisply in the breeze, the great avenues beyond already alive with the motion of a million lives.

Julius felt it the mont they passed beneath the outer gates—the subtle shift in the air, the invisible weight settling back onto his shoulders.

The city itself bore a weight that once more relied upon himself for support.

Serena felt it too.

She straightened unconsciously in her saddle, her posture changing from traveler to sovereign in the space of a few heartbeats.

The relaxed cloak of the road was still about her shoulders, dust still clung to her boots, but her bearing—her presence—had sharpened.

This was where she belonged now.

Unlike his previous return, this ti there were no trumpets sounding out into the sky heralding his arrival.

No streets lined with people cheering for their victorious march, or flower petals streaming through the air.

They had slipped away silently and the whole of the empire could only assu the Emperor had locked himself away hard at work within the Imperial Palace.

~

They rode through streets he had designed himself.

The streets were wide enough to allow two abrest travel by carriage with pedestrian walk ways at the sa ti, the city layout itself was even conceptually more modern as well, with the city divided up into districts rather than just jumble together in a mishmash.

The imperial city easily mirrored the cities one would see back on earth.

Residential neighborhoods with apartnts, and condos replacing the common single dwelling houses, with a few simple shopping centers allowing for access to food in the form of bread, veggies, or at.

Military districts housing the local police force along with legion garrison, training fields, and beyond.

And the most active were the industrial sectors where smithies placed far from places demanding a quieter setting could be places, churning out smoke almost near constantly, as the tal workers repaired and created tons of iron, and steel goods to arm the empire, and her people.

Julius dismounted at the palace gates, handing his reins to a waiting attendant.

Serena followed suit, her hand brushing his briefly as they stepped onto the marble steps together.

The Imperial Palace lood above them—grand but restrained.

No excessive gold.

No indulgent excess.

Power, expressed through proportion and permanence rather than spectacle.

Ho.

Inside, the familiar storm awaited.

Servants bowed.

Courtiers murmured.

ssengers hovered at the edges, scrolls clutched tightly, eyes alight with urgency.

The vacation had ended the mont his boots touched palace stone.

Julius exhaled slowly.

"So it begins," Serena murmured beside him.

He smiled faintly. "It never really stopped."

They were ushered through halls before ultimately being seperated as the month of dirt and gri needed to be scrubbed away, making the pair presentable as the Imperial couple.

Julius was relieved to find that upon his return he was not imdiately thrust back onto the throne and demanded to govern.

Instead getting the chance to remove his travelling clothes before sliding into a tub of ward water.

Watching as the water itself quickly turned brown as the accumulate of dust and dirt that had built up on his skin was removed floating briefly on the surface of the bath before descending down the the floor.

*Aaaaaaaahhhhh*

Was the only thought he had in this mont.

Like when he was back on earth going camping with family or friends, it was the return to civilization itself that made the trip worthwhile.

Like how amazingly delicious simple foods could be after spending days fasting yourself.

Getting to once more experience heated water, or even soap was like getting to experience the future itself after an entire week of living like a caveman.

Seconds turned to minutes, and before he knew it an entire hour slipped by.

The heated water had long since cooled but he still didnt care.

The feeling of being clean was one that was sorely missed.

And even the action of getting out of the source that made him beco clean, was one he didnt want to undertake.

However even still his duties as an emperor could not wait forever.

The peace of the mont was disturbed as his private bath was intruded upon by a servant who’d co to recover the emperor from his reverie.

"Sire, Lady Miri is waiting for you in the eting room."

"Huh... oh hmmm, yes... yes i suppose she would be."

The peace was broken, and now knowing a friend was waiting for him, Julius couldnt find a good enough reason to delay any further.

So reluctantly rising from the bath, before drying himself with a towel that felt as soft as silk.

And donning robes that hugged his form, and glided upon his skin as if he was wearing a second layer of skin.

Once he was dressed properly once more, he alighted from his private chamber, making his way down the rug lined hallways and corridors snaking through the interior of the palace until he reached the eting room that was adjoined to the minister of interiors office, aka Miri’s personal eting room.

*Knock Knock*

Choosing to remain free as much as he could, Julius knocked on the door twice before entering, giving the occupant notice of his arrival.

Even if his action caused the servant trailing behind him to be gobsmacked it was the attendants jobs to open doors for the palace officials.

The emperor being the greatest of the officials and yet... they had failed in their job so greatly that the Emperor of their nation had to open the door himself.

This incurred trauma went entirely unnoticed by Julius, who had already started walking into the eting room leaving the attendant standing in the hallway waiting for his brain to reboot.

"Greetings Emperor Julius, welco back."

"Good Afternoon Miri, it’s good to be ho."

"Enjoy your ti away?"

"Yes, i’d like to remain at rest for longer but duty calls and all that, that being said shall we begin? Otherwise we might get to off track and while away the entire day achieving nothing from my return."
