Chapter 1482: Chapter 1482: Want to Pick Up Which Girl
Shen Chi silently pondered for a mont. What Miao Xiu said wasn’t wrong—the second possibility was indeed the most likely.
The woman standing in the cetery in the rain could very well have been her final appearance. As for the reason, repentance seed the most plausible.
If that were true, and the real culprit was already dead, then there truly wouldn’t be much need to investigate the events of seventeen years ago any further.
Still, he remained curious. What exactly was the relationship between this woman and Zhou Ran that made Zhou Ran unwilling to reveal the truth?
Xiao Mo was lost in thought for a while, his train of thought largely similar to Shen Chi’s.
After a long pause, Xiao Mo asked Miao Xiu, “Did you find anything else?”
Miao Xiu spread his hands. “This discovery is already pretty significant. Seventeen years ago, there wasn’t a single trace left behind. The fact that I managed to find a fingerprint on the tombstone—that’s pure genius!”
“Geniuses aren’t greedy,” Xiao Mo gave him a disdainful look, his tone indifferent. “Besides, I’d think that righteous police officers generally don’t like n who are greedy.”
There was underlying aning in Xiao Mo’s words, and it seed he was settling scores from just monts ago.
“Hahaha.” Miao Xiu just laughed instead. “My ntor knows I like making money. Earning a bit more is also for supporting her, isn’t it?”
Xiao Mo snorted contemptuously. “She doesn’t need you to support her, you sentintal fool!”
The two of them were at odds now, slipping into a mode of mutual teasing and ridicule.
Anyway, they both felt this was Shen Chi’s matter, and it was up to him to make the call.
Shen Chi glanced at them—childish. Grown n, behaving like kids in an argunt.
Xiao Mo was usually quite mature, so how could he bother to bicker with Miao Xiu?
“President Shen,” Miao Xiu noticed Shen Chi was hitting a bottleneck and couldn’t help but try to guide him. “I think, why go to so much trouble? You could choose not to look into it. If you must investigate, the quickest shortcut is asking Mrs. Zhou directly. After all, she’s your mother—persistence usually works.”
“Has it worked for you?” Shen Chi shot him a cold look, firing back.
“…” Miao Xiu shut his mouth.
Fine, fine, Shen Chi was an impractical fool with too much money—why should he bother with soone else’s business?
Miao Xiu had said all there was to say. He decided to personally visit the police station to express his gratitude, and while he was at it, to ask Ayu out for a al.
When Miao Xiu left, the lounge returned to its tranquility.
“President Shen, Miao Xiu is indeed quite capable,” Xiao Mo remarked. “He managed to uncover things we couldn’t.”
“What kind of woman is so clever that she could pull this off flawlessly?” Shen Chi asked curiously.
Xiao Mo shook his head. “I can’t guess.”
“I really want to see her for myself.”
“President Shen, if this woman is already dead, you might not get the chance to. Still, how much longer do you intend to pursue this matter?”
“Unless I get a definitive answer—that this woman is dead—otherwise, who’s to say she isn’t hiding in so corner sowhere?”
Xiao Mo didn’t say anything further. He’d witnessed Shen Chi’s tenacity before.
But he also believed that eventually, there would be an answer.
“Xiao Mo, leave this matter to Miao Xiu. You focus on keeping an eye on the comrcial street project—that one is vital for this year and next, until its completion,” Shen Chi said. “However, do you need so ti to go back and sort out so family affairs?”
Shen Chi hadn’t originally known about Xiao Mo’s family situation until Miao Xiu brought it up—apparently, old Xiao had intentions of calling Xiao Mo back ho.
Over the years, Shen Chi knew Xiao Mo’s family had their own business—one of significant scale.
But Xiao Mo had always refused to return to his hotown; he preferred to stay in C City.
After all, C City was one of the top-tier tropolises, and he liked it here—it held his affections.
Shen Chi didn’t know whether Xiao Mo would eventually leave Shen’s for the family business…
Thinking of this, a faint sense of reluctance crossed his mind.
Xiao Mo wasn’t just his most capable subordinate—he was also his brother over so many years, having accompanied him through the darkest tis, witnessed Shen’s upheavals, and helped him establish his authority within the company.
Still, if Xiao Mo truly wanted to return to his family’s enterprise, Shen Chi wouldn’t stop him.
Shen Chi had always been good at managing emotions. Xiao Mo glanced at him and smiled, saying, “I’ll definitely need so ti, but don’t worry, President Shen. I’ll make sure everything is handled properly without delaying my work.”
“You don’t need to formally ask for leave—manage it yourself.” Shen Chi patted his shoulder, his tone sowhat heavy.
With that, Shen Chi walked off.
It was nearly alti; Xu Chaomu and Lou Yanli had just finished chatting and headed to the restaurant together.
Xu Chaomu called Shen Chi, inviting him to join them.
The lunch was elaborate, and ti seed to stretch, making it suitable for casual conversation.
After finishing their al, Lou Yanli and Tong Shuyi left, not lingering much longer.
Shen Chi stayed with Xu Chaomu, lighting a cigarette.
“Didn’t you say you’d quit smoking?” Xu Chaomu snorted coldly.
“…” Shen Chi didn’t reply.
“You’re worried about sothing, aren’t you?” Xu Chaomu noted his mood.
“No,” Shen Chi said flatly, taking a drag on his cigarette.
“Lying to now, huh? Let guess.” Xu Chaomu looked at him. “Are you chasing after so girl who isn’t giving you the ti of day?”
Shen Chi smiled, his eyes crescent-shaped.
He gazed deeply at Xu Chaomu, his look gentle and full of affection.
“When it cos to chasing girls, I’m undoubtedly better than you. You could ask for advice on becoming a master flirt.” Xu Chaomu spouted nonsense with mock seriousness.
“Idle and aimless—save it to teach your son,” Shen Chi gave her a glance.
“Of course! Otherwise, how else could I have a gorgeous daughter-in-law soday?”
“You think too much. Or are you just too free? If you’re truly free, help proofread so docunts this afternoon then.”
“No way!” Xu Chaomu refused decisively. “I need to go ho to look after my son. But seriously, tell —what’s bothering you?”
“So recent projects ran into trouble—over budget,” Shen Chi said casually, hiding the real situation.
“Work problems, huh? I can’t do much to help, but I believe you’ll figure it out. Shen Chi, do you ever regret marrying at monts like these? If you’d married so rich socialite, her family’s connections and influence could’ve helped you resolve stuff like this more easily.”
“What are you thinking?” Shen Chi replied in a firm voice, his gaze sharp as he looked at her. “Would you rather see unhappy every day? What matters more—my happiness or so contracts?”
Xu Chaomu thought about it and realized he was right.
“Co here!” Shen Chi beckoned her while extinguishing his cigarette.
Xu Chaomu shook her head. “No.”
“Let hold you for a mont.”
“Really, just hold ?”
“Your husband isn’t a beast.”
Xu Chaomu eventually walked over. She could tell Shen Chi wasn’t in the best mood—perhaps the issues with the projects were worse than he let on?
As she neared, Shen Chi pulled her into his arms, holding on tightly before lowering his head to kiss her lips.
This kiss carried less tenderness than usual, tinged with urgency and far more forceful.
The kiss tasted of tobacco—his unique scent.
Xu Chaomu responded to him, entangled with him on the sofa.
This storm-like, consuming kiss went on for a very, very long ti.
