Chapter 595: Chapter 243 Kill Them! (Request Subscription)

The sun is high in the sky.

In the garrison city outside Kyoto Prefecture, unlike the bustling counties of Changle and Yongnian,

even though the area here is vast with nurous residences of marquises and generals, the soldiers focus solely on training each day, with hardly any ti for idle chatter.

This, even Chen Yuan, who had just arrived, clearly understood.

Of course, his nature was also reserved, not fond of lively crowds.

After arriving at the camp, he imrsed himself in military training and studying warfare tactics.

During breaks, Chen Yuan would have the old steward Chen Ke gather people like Chou Long to explain marching and formation tactics and ways to defend against the northern Demon Court, mostly involving Taoist Formations and soldier guarding thods.

As a result, he realized that in the past thousand years, over ten thousand battles of various sizes had been fought at Beixiong Pass, with the Demon Court launching more than a dozen campaigns to the south each year.

Most of these were rely scattered Demon Generals leading small numbers of demons; large-scale incidents like the one thirty years ago with Fengyue Demon Emperor were rare.

Just like now, the Demon Court in the north had dispatched demons to the south.

Although they were all low-grade Little Demons, their numbers approached a million.

Had most of them not been shouting and watching the battle with Wei Dynasty, the Wuan Army would also have rushed to Beixiong Pass.

“With such frequent harassnt by the Demon Court, how are the Taishan Army’s casualties?” Chen Yuan asked.

“Every ti over ten thousand Imps attack, the casualties are not significant, and Marquis Taishan can handle it.”

Chou Long, taller and more robust than Chen Yuan, even when sitting on a short Taishi Chair, was still a head taller than Chen Yuan.

He composed himself and replied, “We learned from demons we captured that the Demon Court calls this ‘Dragon Gate Leaping.'”

“Just like our Wei Dynasty’s military training, any demon who climbs Beixiong Pass and returns alive will be cultivated by the Demon Court.”

“Dragon Gate Leaping…”

Chen Yuan had naturally heard the legend of carp leaping over the dragon gate, but it was the first ti he had heard of such a selection thod by the Demon Court.

“You may not know, Marquis,” Chou Long continued, “a demon’s cultivation can be enhanced through demon energy, but due to the limits of demon bloodlines, most demons can’t enhance much even with a Blood Core.”

“And with so many demons, thousands or tens of thousands are born yearly in the Ten Thousand Mountains, prompting the Demon Court to use this thod to select talents.”

“Otherwise, the consumption of these newborn demons alone could overburden the Ten Thousand Mountains.”

Chen Yuan nodded thoughtfully; the living conditions in the Demon Court are harsher than within the Wei Dynasty’s territory.

Even with the vast expanse of the Ten Thousand Mountains, demons also experience hunger and certain consumption.

Decades may not reveal it, but over thousands or tens of thousands of years, as highly cultivated demons erge, the Ten Thousand Mountains could eventually beco a re thousand.

“The demon who ca up with this selection thod is indeed clever.”

Chou Long’s stern face showed a slight smile as he said, “You’re right, Marquis. A thousand years ago, the Demon Emperor was a white Fox Demon with wisdom rivaling Confucian Saints.”

“Not only does it solve the Demon Court’s difficulties, but it also consus our front-line soldiers of the Wei Dynasty, serving dual purposes. Truly impressive.”

As he praised, Chen Ke lightly tapped the table, calmly saying:

“The Marquis wishes to hear about the thods of defending Beixiong Pass.”

Chou Long’s grin froze, and he nodded awkwardly: “Indeed, my lord is correct, I digressed.”

“Actually, Marquis need not worry, Beixiong Pass is well equipped with thods to counter the Demon Court, with all formations, equipnt, and talismans complete. As long as we don’t venture out, casualties are nearly nonexistent.”

Chen Yuan’s eyes fixed on the two, coldly asking, “Is it just as rare as with my great-grandfather?”

Chou Long’s expression slightly changed, and seeing Chen Ke unresponsive, he braced himself and said:

“Before, I didn’t know clearly, but during my last service under the Old Marquis at the frontier, the casualties… were deliberately excessive.”

“Deliberate?”

“I wasn’t the only one to think this; others from the Inspection Departnt and senior sect mbers could see it too.”

“The Old Marquis ordered the Devoted Army multiple tis to engage with demons outside the pass, claiming it was learning from the Demon Court’s ‘Dragon Gate Leaping’ thod, that only those who survive have a future…”

Chou Long cupped his hands, speaking with a darkened face: “Forgive , Marquis, I couldn’t dissuade him!”

Chen Yuan made no response, his expression unchanged.

After a mont of silence.

“Continue to speak…”

Just then, a brisk female voice ca from outside the hall, “Marquis, I have a report.”

Chen Yuan frowned, glancing at Chen Ke and Chou Long, who respectfully stood and left, and said:

“Co in and speak.”

“Yes.”

Wei Jinyu was seen in a guard uniform, trying to imitate a soldier’s deanor as she stepped in and saluted:

“Marquis, soone outside the residence requests a eting, claiming to have an appointnt.”

Chen Yuan didn’t think much of it, nor did he look at her, keeping his head down as he focused on the military books in his hand: “Not eting…”

Just as he spoke, he paused and looked up at Wei Jinyu, asking: “Did they state their identity?”

Wei Jinyu, noticing his gaze, revealed a soft smile on her graceful face:

“Reporting to the Marquis, that person appears to be from the Yuhua Immortal Sect, wearing a rainbow Daoist robe.”

Chen Yuan’s eyes shifted slightly, gesturing: “Let him in.”

Wei Jinyu was about to turn and leave when she heard Chen Yuan continue to instruct: “After passing the ssage, find Chen Ke and ask him to prepare a room for you.”

“Yes, Marquis!”

Wei Jinyu felt a surge of joy in her heart, quickly bowing respectfully, not thinking it inappropriate for a princess to bow to Chen Yuan.
