Chapter 1279: Chapter 1281 Leaving Chapter 1279: Chapter 1281 Leaving Just as Song Jian was taking delight in his rapid levelling up, he suddenly heard a series of screams coming from the front yard.

Frowning, a pair of black and red wings erged behind Song Jian, and he soared into the air, flying towards the Zhenmo Temple’s front courtyard.

At that mont, two resentful spirits in the courtyard were incessantly killing ordinary humans in cages, extracting their souls for nourishnt, and boosting their own cultivation.

By now, the eyes of these two resentful spirits were blood-red; they had absorbed too many souls, far exceeding their capacity. They were sowhat delirious, reduced to instinctual reactions and degenerating into even more malevolent demon spirits.

Song Jian arrived and saw the few remaining ordinary people in the cages; his face changed dramatically. He knew that to complete his side mission, he needed to rescue the ordinary people, and at least twenty were required. Otherwise, no matter how many monsters he slayed, he would not be able to complete the mission.

With this thought, Song Jian was furious. He attacked with rage, and hundreds of Spirit Swords, like a ferocious storm, flew towards the two half-blackened resentful spirits.

Although the resentful spirits had lost their clarity of mind, their strength had long surpassed that of ordinary spirits. Sensing the threat, they let out a sharp, piercing scream, like spikes jabbing at Song Jian’s ears.

The ordinary humans in the nearby cages scread in pain, covering their ears. So who were too close to the spirits bled from their ears, showing agonized expressions as they knelt in the cages, barely clinging to life, seemingly not long for this world.

How could Song Jian bear this? Controlling the Spirit Sword, he slashed fiercely at the two demon spirits. They too evolved their arms into sharp claws, constantly waving them to fend off the Spirit Swords. For a mont, the sounds of collision were incessant, sparks flew everywhere, and, remarkably, the demon spirits managed to block the Spirit Swords with their claws alone.

Keep in mind that the sharpness of the Spirit Swords was not inferior to any Dark Gold Quality weapon by then. To collide with so many Spirit Swords without any damage, the claws of the demon spirits were as powerful as epic-grade weapons.

However, although they could withstand the sharpness of the Spirit Swords, they could not ward off the Red Lotus Karma Fire attached to the swords. At that mont, they were like barrels of gasoline, and a re spark of the Red Lotus Karma Fire could ignite them.

As they continued to fend off the Spirit Swords, both resentful spirits beca engulfed in the Red Lotus Karma Fire. At first, it seed insignificant, but soon the demon spirits discovered that the Red Lotus Karma Fire on them could not be extinguished, no matter how they tried to cover it with their demonic aura. The result was that the flas grew fiercer.

In the end, both demon spirits beca moving pillars of fire, screaming miserably as they fell into flas and turned to ash, leaving not even a whole corpse behind.

Out of the ashes of the demon spirits, two Dark Gold beads and so other materials rolled out. Song Jian beckoned with his right hand, and the spoils flew into his grasp. After briefly inspecting the properties of the spoils, he emotionlessly stored them in his inventory.

The two Dark Gold Quality beads were sowhat interesting; they were called Magic Explosion Beads, a consumable item that would explode within a few seconds upon activation, causing 3,000 points of damage and demonic aura erosion to everything within a ten-ter radius.

It was simply a magically altered high-explosive grenade with trendous power. It was diocre for grinding or dealing with bosses but could produce unexpected effects against players.

But for Song Jian, such items were better than nothing, hardly precious. Unless sothing unexpected happened, they would end up in the war guild’s storage, to be exchanged by guild players for Contribution Points.

Song Jian opened all the cages with a rather unsightly expression. At this mont, a dozen or so people trembled out of the cages. Although weak in appearance, these people managed to walk out of their cages on their own. As each one stepped out, the required number of people for Song Jian’s task in his task bar decreased by one.

After the last person had exited the cage, Song Jian was still three people short of satisfying the need for twenty, which made his expression even more unpleasant.

You should know that there were still over a hundred ordinary people detained in the front yard, whom he saw earlier. If it hadn’t been for his excessive greed in hunting the monsters of Zhenmo Temple, resulting in his slow arrival at the front yard, he could have rescued at least seventy or eighty people. But now, due to his late arrival, he had only managed to save a dozen or so.

“Damn it, am I really going to let the mission fail?” Song Jian cursed silently in his heart.

Just then, a faint moan ca from a cage, stirring Song Jian’s heart. He quickly rushed to the cage and found an old man in tattered clothes, barely clinging to life, lying at the far end of the cage.

At this mont, the old man’s Vitality Points were down to a re sliver, only a dozen or so, and every few seconds, they would drop by one. If left unattended, he would die within a few minutes at most.

How could Song Jian let the old man die like this? He hurriedly took out a high-level healing potion from his bag and gently poured it into the old man’s mouth. In no ti, the old man’s Vitality Points started to increase slowly, and he opened his eyes with a hint of color returning to his cheeks.

“It’s working!” Song Jian’s eyes lit up as he gently laid down the old man and began to search the cage.

It wasn’t long before he found five or six ordinary people in a dozen or so cages who were in a dying state. After reviving them all with the high-level healing potions, Song Jian finally considered his side mission completed.

He leveled up and his Experience Points also increased to 87%. Song Jian discovered that rescuing each citizen could boost his Experience Points by at least 4%-5%, his face imdiately betraying a hint of regret.

If he had co earlier, the Experience Points he would have gained would definitely have been more than what he got from hunting those monsters.

“Forget it, I should be satisfied with gaining several levels here…” Song Jian shook his head and consoled himself.

Just then, Master Yiwen, supported by several grey-robed monks, walked over slowly. Looking at the corpses littering the cages, a look of sorrow appeared on Master Yiwen’s face.

Under the guidance of Master Yiwen, several monks sat cross-legged and began to recite scriptures to liberate the souls of the deceased. Unfortunately, the spirits of these commoners had long been devoured by the resentful spirits. Even the monks’ recitations would be of no use to the departed souls, serving only to slightly lessen the monks’ own sense of guilt.

“Benefactor, thank you for your help!” After finishing the recitations, Master Yiwen slowly stood up and pointed to the Zhenmo Temple’s main gate behind Song Jian, saying, “Benefactor, once you pass through that gate, you’ll be able to leave this place…”

Song Jian’s heart leaped with joy. He had been worried that after killing the Demon God, he would be trapped in this small world. But to his surprise, upon completing the system task, he was also able to leave.

Bowing in gratitude to Master Yiwen, Song Jian turned without any attachnt and walked toward the great gates of Zhenmo Temple. Pushing open the gates, a faint blue Transmission Array appeared in front of him. Song Jian stepped into it without hesitation, his figure disappearing into the Array.

“Brothers, let’s bury these commoners first…” Master Yiwen sighed, addressing the other monks.

The monks nodded in acknowledgnt and began to take care of the corpses of the commoners in the cages, while Master Yiwen, caressing the Demon God’s Tusk in his bosom, had a look of mysterious contemplation mingling with sorrow on his face.
