Zzz...

Beneath the iron wall of Gaozheng Base’s Central Managent Area, Tang Ye and his group stood listening to the sound from the loudspeaker above, as if it ca from a cassette tape.

It seed like soone was broadcasting so information, but the connection seed to be faulty. The sound wasn’t transmitting properly. However, Tang Ye could faintly hear a feeble voice within the iron wall.

"Let’s go in."

Tang Ye pointed towards the entrance. The bodies in front of the door had been artificially cleared away, indicating that survivors had entered the base for refuge after the zombie horde breached Gaozheng Base’s defenses. But Tang Ye could only faintly sense the presence of a sowhat insignificant zombie inside, beyond that, there was nothing else.

Upon hearing his words, a few of the hot-rod gang went to inspect the entrance. After a while, soone reported back: "Um... boss, we need access codes to open this door, which we don’t have..."

"Just break it open."

Tang Ye waved his hand impatiently. The gang mbers holding laser weapons looked excited. They hadn’t had a chance to use their laser weapons before, but considering what they’d seen in pre-Apocalypse sci-fi movies, they expect these weapons to be extrely powerful!

Thus, several dozen mbers equipped with glowing blue laser weapons stepped forward. They asured their distance from the wall, uncertain whether the weapon’s attack would cause an explosion, but decided to be prepared, rembering how one unlucky guy was blown backwards by the recoil of a laser cannon.

The gang mbers with laser weapons exchanged glances and, under the envious gaze of others, aid their weapons at the iron wall and pressed the spiral-shaped triggers.

Zzz... Zzz...

Several finger-thick blue beams shot out, causing everyone to recoil from the force of the lasers.

"Whoa, aweso!"

Excited exclamations erupted from so of the gang mbers. they were already imagining a huge hole being lasered through the iron wall.

Dozens of blue beams continuously shot at the slick, black iron wall, spewing out puffs of white smoke with a persistent "zzz" corroding sound, but the smoke was too thick to see the state of the wall.

Believing the job was done, one man ceased his attack, and others, following the crowd, stopped as well. Before they could see the condition of the wall, they heard an unexpected "huh" from Tang Ye.

When the smoke cleared, to everyone’s surprise, the iron wall remained unscathed, except for the parts the lasers had hit, which now glowed red.

A chilling silence filled the air, broken after a mont by Tang Ye’s sarcastic laugh.

He had a pretty good idea what was going on. This wall must be made of a highly light-absorbent tal, maybe sothing like sodium.

But it was pathetic that they’d gone to such lengths. Clearly, the wall was designed to withstand laser weapons.

But no zombie would use human weapons, let alone manufacture their own.

So, the wall’s purpose as a barrier against zombies seed highly unlikely!

Any survivor living in a base for long enough could guess why such large amounts of "sodium" tal were used to build this wall with a glance.

While survivor bases did provide a safe haven for humans, in the apocalypse, human nature had been distorted, and people were complicated. Wherever there were people, there were power struggles.

When there were enough people, a society ford. In this society, groups ford based on mutual interests.

These factions would contend within the society, and the faction with the greatest benefits would beco the society’s leader.

Being a leader in society ant having more resources, which could prompt the green-eyed monster of envy in others at any ti and lead to potential power struggles.

And the base was just such a society. The Base Commander sat atop the peak of power, always wary of potential usurpers.

To guard against this, many survivor bases built high walls. These walls were originally intended to separate the New and Old Humans, but eventually, these walls had beco symbols of power. Whoever lived behind them was the ruler.

Gaozheng Base had gone to extre lengths to safeguard against power struggles by constructing its wall from "sodium" tal. This was purely to protect the base from other factions suddenly attempting to seize power.

Now, in the more technologically advanced bases, many non-dominant factions possessed powerful laser weapons. Those weapons could effortlessly penetrate any normal wall!

Although many leaders would likely adopt such asures, there was sothing chilling about the mutual suspicion that persisted even at this critical juncture of humanity’s fight for survival.

"Can you open it?" Tang Ye stroked the cold wall and asked Chen Zhou’an.

He shook his head. As powerful as Level 4 New Humans were, they couldn’t just wrench off an unbroken wall.

Click.

Pulling off a piece of the congealed blood cocoon on the wall, Tang Ye effortlessly vaulted over it with a push of his foot.

The Chen brothers exchanged glances and agilely scaled the ten-ter-high wall. The rest of the high-level New Humans followed them under their guidance.

"Boss, bring us so food!"

The hot-rod gang yelled from below. They’d been hungry for a while now, and with their path blocked by the wall, they were unable to follow, due to their physical limitations. All they could do was appeal to Chen Zhou’an.

However, the few n didn’t respond and continued on their way, ignoring them completely.

The hot-rod gang was helpless, unsure if there would be food inside. But food was extrely precious in the post-apocalypse, so it was reasonable to assu that the wall was there to keep the food safe from theft.

There might be food elsewhere, but Gaozheng Base had just been overrun by a zombie horde. They weren’t sure if all the zombies had left. In addition to Tang Ye’s previous warning, the group had no choice but to stick together and avoid wandering off.

They couldn’t afford to ss around. If any lingering monstrous creatures spotted them, they’d be killed without even knowing what happened.

One simply could not comprehend the horror of high-level zombies in the post-apocalypse without having witnessed them firsthand.

"Why is it so clean in here?"

As they entered, the two Level 3 New Humans began to whisper. Compared to the chaos outside, the world inside the wall seed to have returned to pre-Apocalypse tis. The two looked like different worlds, except there were no people on the streets.

"Everyone must have withdrawn."

"Yeah, I heard that many survivor bases have administrative areas where the elite live. If there’s a zombie attack, it’s only natural that they’d withdraw first."

"They are just too inhuman. While the soldiers outside are dying by the truckload, the officials are sitting pretty just eating their fill."

One of them grumbled indignantly, but nobody else responded. After following Tang Ye a while longer, they began to hear a sound gradually coming from up ahead.
