After Bai Huipeng dispersed the more than three hundred people he had brought from the gathering area to look for their targets, it wasn’t long before a throng erged bustle and hustle from the main entrance of an office building.
In the middle of the crowd, a disheveled figure was being escorted. Seeing the behavior of this crowd, Bai Huipeng assud this must be their leader. He quickly pulled out his gun, intending to assassinate him on the spot. However, the next mont, a voice from the crowd made Bai Huipeng pause in his action.
"Boss... boss, we’ve captured that dog leg of Song Wuli, it’s him!"
With that, they threw the man down onto the ground with great pleasure, one after another.
The man thrown onto the ground turned out to be the one who had previously gained Song Wuli’s deepest trust!
Although he had done nothing wrong in the past, misfortune befell him for associating with the wrong person.
Poor Level 1 New Human was thus worn out by a group of ordinary people.
With a loud thud, they dumped him on the ground. After a while, the man managed to struggle into a semi-crouching position. His face was bruised and swollen from the beating, but the blood on his hands was not his own, indicating he had fought back and killed a few who dared to offend him.
Unfortunately, even the Level 1 New Humans were not invincible. Facing a dozen or so opponents, they could easily be overwheld. The crowd had effectively brought him down with their sheer numbers.
His face was expressionless, as if he suffered from facial paralysis, only his eyes glanced around at the crowd and finally rested on Bai Huipeng.
Intrigued by his deanor, Bai Huipeng asked, "What’s your na?"
He didn’t respond, just lowered his head. He tried to get up, but his legs seed to be severely injured. After several attempts, he failed to rise, only managing to remain in a semi-kneeling position.
"Speak, what’s your na? I might consider sparing your life!"
Irritated by the man’s arrogance, Bai Huipeng shouted out his sentence.
"Yang Xiao!"
"Yang Xiao, I see. Where is your boss now?"
"I don’t know," Yang Xiao answered without hesitation.
"Are you sure?"
"I’m sure, I really don’t know!"
Yang Xiao spoke in a decisive manner, straightforward without any ambiguity, revealing the distinctive temperant of a soldier.
From this, Bai Huipeng easily guessed his forr profession.
"Were you a soldier before?"
"I was, not anymore."
With those words, a trace of despair flitted through Yang Xiao’s eyes. In the early days of dystopia, he and a few comrades had hidden in the multidia technology room, watching helplessly as their comrades transford into monsters and brutally killed others.
He’d initially believed that they could survive if they united. However, he had been wrong from the start. Humanity could be both good and evil, but its leanings often depended on the environnt.
Perhaps, people are naturally kind-hearted, but when they find themselves in a less fortunate situation, the instinctive response is self-preservation!
That period of ti may have been short, but in Yang Xiao’s eyes, it had seed like an eternity. He had watched as a desperate fight for food had turned comrades against each other, resulting in death and injury until there were hardly any remaining.
In the end, he joined up with another group of surviving comrades, believing that they would maintain their principles and sense of justice. However, he had been wrong once again. Just as before, all he saw was the ugliness of human nature, as they fought over resources with no regard for their comrades.
Eventually, he encountered Song Wuli, a man who, at first glance, appeared gentle and honest.
Although in ti he ca to see Song Wuli’s true colours, by then he was too tired to argue, rely wanting to get by, living life like the walking dead.
Bai Huipeng had no interest in his past, instead, he steered the conversation back to the subject at hand.
"Let ask you one more ti, are you sure you don’t know where that Song Wu... sothing is hiding?"
"I’m positive! He must be in hiding, but he can’t escape," Yang Xiao replied.
"Can’t escape?" Bai Huipeng appeared dubious, but didn’t press the issue. His main purpose here was to recruit people for his own side. Whether they killed Song Wuli or not wasn’t of utmost importance. If Song Wuli had run away, they wouldn’t go to great lengths to pursue him, would they?
"So that’s how it is, I won’t waste any more words. I have a question for you, would you like to join us?"
"Join you?"
Yang Xiao looked up abruptly, squinting his eyes in confusion.
"Yes, join us. We are short of people, that’s why we ca here."
"I thought you were here for revenge," Yang Xiao replied, puzzled. He’d heard that a group had co for revenge on behalf of those who had been killed a few days ago. But now, Bai Huipeng was saying they needed more people.
Once again, Bai Huipeng showed a mont of impatience before he retorted, "What does it matter to you why we’re here? This is the bloody apocalypse! Did you think we were still living under a system of laws? Is anyone standing up against arson, murder, and looting? Geez! Just tell whether you will join us or not. If you agree, you’ll co with us later, if not, I’ll kill you!"
Yang Xiao was silent for a mont before he looked into Bai Huipeng’s eyes and asked, "Are you their leader?"
On hearing this, Bai Huipeng laughed involuntarily and replied, "No."
"What?"
Yang Xiao was stunned. From the mont he had set eyes on Bai Huipeng, he had known that he was a Level 2 New Human, and therefore assud he must be the leader of this group!
"If you’re not, then how is it possible that you’re a Level 2 New Human and not the leader? Then who is the real leader?"
"You an our boss? He’s at ho. A Level 2 New Human is nothing to him! Even bullets can’t hurt our boss! What level New Human do you think our boss is? Let tell you, just a few days ago, a Level 2 New Human didn’t even last a single round against our boss, and was completely defeated!"
Yang Xiao was stunned for a mont. During this pause, Bai Huipeng continued, "Look, look at our people. Don’t they look just like your guys? Skin and bones? Under the leadership of our boss, we live a good life!"
At this point, a couple of followers ran up to Bai Huipeng with faces shining with joy, "Brother Peng, we’ve found it! It’s in a classroom on the top floor, and there indeed are a lot of good stuff!"
Bai Huipeng displayed a triumphant look when he heard the report. He waved his hand to dismiss his followers and then said to Yang Xiao, "See how your boss is? He keeps all the good stuff to himself. Not like our boss, who ensures we never go hungry. Also, let tell you, if it weren’t for the fact that I see you as a talented person, I wouldn’t be bothered to talk to you about all this."
Upon hearing this, Yang Xiao couldn’t help but smirk. "What do you an you see as a talent? Clearly, it’s because you see as a New Human!"
Surviving up until now in the apocalypse, he already knew that New Humans were rare. It was precisely this point that led Bai Huipeng to try and recruit him.
